wandering this broken world

The Wednesday after she meets Mallory, when the witch-induced spike in crime seems to be wearing off, Tobi heads out.

She doesn't like to stay in one place for too long, even if she doesn't have a new target; she told her parents she was "travelling" after graduating high school, and actually moving around a lot makes that a bit less of a lie.  Mallory has her number and she has Mallory's; they can get in touch if one or the other of them is in serious danger.  She thinks she might head back around to Jackson some time, see if the League stays together.

But for now, she's heading northeast, toward Nashville.

Permalink Mark Unread

One night, there's a disturbance over that way, as Tobi's passing one of the parks. Feels magical.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm.

She glances around.  No non-magical-girls around that she can see.

She transforms and heads toward the scuffle.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a fight going on, between a girl in white edged with sea-green wielding a trident, and a slightly older girl in various shades of lavender wielding spiked brass knuckles that she can apparently shoot spikes out of.

They're not talking, but the trident girl is being significantly more aggressive with her attacks. Neither seems to notice Tobi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jesus.  Territory dispute?  Maybe she can break it up -

"Hey!  Hey!"  She rushes toward them.  "What's the - what the fuck, guys?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They glance at her. "She started it!" accuses trident; she looks mid-teens at the absolute oldest.

Brass knuckles frowns. "I said I'd leave, though it's not like you'd miss one witch."

Permalink Mark Unread

She can be fast when she needs to be.  She flash-steps between the two of them, giving them both a shove away from each other, and conjures a pair of swordstaffs to hold pointed at each one.  A warning, but she's also not exactly standing in a combat stance.  "We got enough enemies without fighting each other, yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"But this is my territory!" trident says, clearly frustrated.

Brass knuckles is backing off, though she's keeping a wary eye on both other girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least they're not actively fighting any more.  She lowers the swordstaffs.

"Look, mint, I got spares - " she sticks one swordstaff into the ground for safekeeping, then retrieves a grief seed from her belt and tosses it in mint-trident's direction.  "There.  Payment.  But come on, you couldn't harvest every single witch in your territory if you tried, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Trident crosses her arms. "That's not the point. Who're you, anyways? Another nomad?"

Knuckles rolls her eyes. "The point's getting rid of witches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look, it sounds to me like Knuckles here was gonna leave the witch for you to nab before I came along anyway.  Plus you've got the extra seed I gave you.  Right now you're coming out on top.  Wanna keep it that way?"

Without waiting for an answer, she turns to the other girl.  "Hey, Knuckles, wanna get out of here?" she asks, in a lower voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then leave!" the other girl declares, scowling.

Knuckles gives Tobi a flat look, but says, "Sure," and backs further away from trident.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Happy to."  She vanishes her swordstaffs and leads Knuckles away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who keeps her guard slightly up, but follows.

"Thanks for intervening," she says once they're clear. "I'm Sasha. You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tobi.  Are you low?"  She gestures with a grief seed.  "I do have spares."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit more than I like to be, yeah, if you don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem.  I just took down a big one the other day, so."  She hands off the grief seed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She clears her gem, then hands it back. "Thanks. That'll tide me over a while." She drops her costume, then. No sense in wasting the magic. "You a nomad, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep.  Got here from Jackson.  Not one for farming?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face. "No. Ick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I know how you feel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm from just over the Appalachians. Surprising number of witches in nowheresville, but not quite enough, so. Decided to see about wandering. Always wanted to do a road trip, anyways. 'S kinda nice, just me and my dog and the wide wilderness, though you get to missing people. Well, decent people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  I'm from - well, the suburbs, but it's a secret which ones.  Friend of mine figured out a way to track really big witches as they move between cities, I go after them when I can."

"You know, if you're headed in that direction, I actually met a team of magical girls in Jackson.  They're doing better than teams usually do.  If you're looking for decent people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A team, huh? I'll check them out. Not sure I'll stick around, but you never know. ...Hey, want to trade phone numbers, just in case? So I can return that favor if you ever need it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing."  She gives Sasha her phone number - not Tag's this time, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she gives hers.

"Thanks again for helping, and for the heads up about the team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, no problem.  We do have enough enemies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'd expected less - infighting - when I wished."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me too, honestly.  My Kyubey warned me that lots of us don't get along, but I didn't really realize how bad it was until afterwards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I have more faith in people than's generally been held up, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The League seems pretty decent.  - that's what the team I met calls themselves.  But.  Yeah."  She shakes her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "You want me to stick around, or?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm good. Thanks, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No worries.  I'll see you around, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely. I'll be heading towards Jackson next, I think." Friendly magical girls sounds like a nice change of pace.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have fun.  Think I'm gonna find a hotel here, loiter around Nashville for a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most of the magical girls around Nashville aren't as annoying as that one, at least not that I've run into. Good hunting, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  You too."

With that, they part ways.

Permalink Mark Unread

She heads back to her RV for the night, then to Jacksonville the next day. (The team is indeed very nice. She lingers for a bit, trades contact info, then heads on. The road is calling.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi does indeed stick around Nashville for a few days.  She manages not to run into wintergreen-trident again, thankfully.  Then, she too moves on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasha arrives in Jackson on Saturday, runs errands, finds a parking lot to park in while she's here, walks her dog, and settles in for the night.

Sunday night, she goes hunting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal is running patrol for the night. It's been calm, mostly - she's taken down a familiar, hasn't found a witch yet.

She spots a flash of purple on a rooftop in the distance, and goes to investigate. When she finds the new girl - woman, really - she slows down and waves, calling out, "Hello! Haven't seen you around before."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sasha turns at the greeting and smiles slightly. "No. I'm a nomad. Someone I ran into mentioned there were some friendly magical girls in these parts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd probably be me and my friends. We have a group going, meeting on Saturdays. You just passing through, or are you thinking of sticking around? We'd be glad to have you if so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not big on staying in one place, so I'll continue on sooner or later - I've been thinking of doing part of Route 66 while it's not too hot out. But I might swing back by on Saturday, depending on how my mood goes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Just stick clear of hunting too much in Memphis, some of the girls there are aggressive. You're welcome to hunt as much as you want here, there's plenty to go around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind. And for the permission."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no trouble at all. Do you want my contact info in case you decide to come by, or if there's an emergency? This area sometimes throws big witches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." And contact info can be exchanged.

Sasha says goodbye afterwards, and heads out to continue her hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

In Jackson, Kaylee's sacrificing extracurriculars in favor of keeping her grades up.  She's noticed she tends to feel worse on days when she's low on magic, so she's been clearing her soul gem more and more often.

She spends a lot of time thinking about her wish.  She can't even remember exactly what it was she said.  To be less afraid of witches, to be able to fight without being terrified or anxious...

She still hasn't told Lianne about it yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Kaylee," Lianne says Monday when she gets on the bus. After initial pleasantries are exchanged: "Your recital's Wednesday, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!  Will you be able to come?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't miss it for the world! I'm super excited."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!  "I'm really looking forward to playing for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush! "That'll be really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

She's been hesitant about kissing Lianne in public, since Lianne doesn't want to be public about it yet, but she does take Lianne's hand and squeeze a little in an affectionate sort of way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ahhhh.

Lianne squeezes back. Over the telepathy, 'I think I want to tell the rest of the League. It's - I dislike hiding this from them. Hiding you. You're amazing, the whole world should know about how awesome you are. How lucky I am.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh gosh!!!  Kaylee's actually speechless for a moment.

'I - wow - if you want to I'd love for people to know.  I'm really - thank you, Lianne.  You're really great too, I've been so happy to have you as my girlfriend...'  She grins even more widely on the word "girlfriend."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze. (And not kissing her in front of everyone is really really hard). She's pretty sure there's an incredibly sappy look on her face.

'You've been the best girlfriend I could imagine.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww!

She leans over and gives Lianne a quick sideways hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee!

Lianne returns the sideways hug, and is quite content to side-ways cuddle until they reach the school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cuddles are had.

Eventually they have to part ways, though.

"I'll see you around, Lianne."  At the same time she say Lianne's name she telepathically sends the word 'darling.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww.

"See you Kaylee!" And then: 'Lovebird.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee!

Permalink Mark Unread

School goes well, and eventually Wednesday rolls around. Lianne makes sure to arrive early for Kaylee's recital, enough to grab front-row seats. She ends up dragging her sister along, since she doesn't exactly have her own car.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee catches Lianne's eye as the curtain comes up.  She doesn't wave, but she pings her to say, 'Glad you could make it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm glad too! This'll be great! - No pressure, though.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks.'

After that, though, she has to focus on playing.  They're mostly classical pieces, subdued and dignified but not melancholy, with a few higher-energy interludes.  Kaylee mostly plays, well, cello parts, but in one or two of the songs she has a brief solo.

Right before the orchestra launches into the opening theme from Amadeus, probably this concert's most exciting song, she pings Lianne again: 'This one's for you, darling.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeee!

Lianne listens intently.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a gripping piece if you let it carry you along, by turns ominous and thrilling and energetic and somber, and this arrangement gives every section the chance to shine.

With that, the recital ends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne claps very enthusiastically!

Permalink Mark Unread

The whole orchestra takes a bow, and Kaylee manages to catch Lianne's eye again when she does.  She grins.  'Glad you liked it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I loved it! You're really good.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Aw, thanks!  I've gotta help the rest of the orchestra get cleaned up, but I can probably sneak off to say hi properly if you want!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Don't get in trouble on my account; I don't mind waiting at all. You're worth it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're sweet.  See you in a minute.'

She does emerge after a few moments, dragging her big wheeled cello case after her.  She waves.  "Hi Lianne!  Enjoy the concert?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Very much so!"

Her sister, who's staffing nearby, mentions off-handedly that she was also impressed. "You guys are good, for a high school orchestra."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad you had fun!" she says to Lianne, and to her sister, "Thanks, Emma."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait to see you perform again!" Lianne says.

Her sister just replies, "Sure, you're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the next one is in May," she says.  "I'd love to have you in the audience!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to be there!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looking forward to it!  I should go see my parents now though - " she gestures toward the crowd.  "See you tomorrow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's parents hug her and compliment her performance and help her negotiate her cello into their car, and then head home.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next day's a half day, thanks to a parent-teacher conference in the afternoon (which Lianne is so not looking forwards to the results of), and they have the Friday after off.

'Want to go hunting this afternoon, since we don't have school tomorrow?' Lianne asks Thursday morning. 'Emma's going to be going out, mom'll be at the conference and then work until late, I can slip out pretty easy.'

(She's usually fairly rule-abiding, but the long grounding's unfair. Her mom should probably just be glad she didn't try to sneak off a week ago.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sounds good to me!'

Permalink Mark Unread

So after she gets home, she waits for her sister to leave, then just - walks out the front door. It's not like there's anyone home, and her neighbors don't know she's grounded. She pings Kaylee, 'So where do you wanna meet? I can manage anywhere near the bus line. The mall again might work.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, let's meet at the mall.  See you there!'

She tells her parents that she's going to go meet some friends in the city and heads out.

Permalink Mark Unread

The bus takes a bit, but not too long, luckily. Lianne hangs around the entrance to the mall until Kaylee arrives. She waves at her girlfriend when she spots her, grinning broadly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!  Hug!

Kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! Quick kiss!

"I don't have long before Emma returns, unfortunately," she says after they separate. "We probably have enough time to just hang out for a bit, but it might be smarter to go out looking right away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go on our search first, then see where we are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

And so the hunt begins.

They're less active in the early afternoon, it seems.  But if they look for a while they can find someone stumbling, in a sort of daze, through a back alley.

"Is he..." Kaylee murmurs.  "He looks like he's been - Kissed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Let's check it out." Does she sense anything?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's something, that might be a weak witch, but it's a way away.  If it's responsible, it did it to him a while ago, and let him wander away.

He stops walking but doesn't otherwise react to his presence.

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes up to him, somewhat warily. "Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't say anything.  There's magic on him, though, she can tell; and he looks a bit like Kaylee did when she was Kissed, sort of airy, not bothering to react to most things.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Can she feel how to dismiss the magic?

Permalink Mark Unread

It wouldn't be effortless, but there might be a sort of shove she can give...

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It works.  He gasps, and sags, and almost falls over, but they manage to catch him in time.

"What... who are... you?" he murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Kaylee tries to ping Mallory: 'Mal, we found a guy who had a Witch's Kiss and Lianne managed to cure him.  Should we - tell him about stuff, or...?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'He'll be in a fugue state for a while. Probably best to tell him he's having a bad dream, and that he should return home.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She relays this to Lianne, but adds, 'I'm not sure how I feel about telling him it's a dream, though...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. It's probably what's safest and least distressing for him, though...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Maybe.  Yeah.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I hate lying though. But... We don't want him to be a target. If he knows. So.'

She turns to the guy and says, "You're just having a bad dream. It'll end when you go to sleep at home."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

"Do you know where you live?" Kaylee asks.  "You know how to get there?"

He nods again.

"Okay.  Don't get lost."

He wanders off.

'I think I want to follow him home,' Kaylee says.  'Make sure he gets there okay.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. Let's.'

Permalink Mark Unread

He's out of it the whole way, but he doesn't get into any trouble.  Eventually he goes into a shoddy-looking apartment building.  Kaylee visibly relaxes when he does.

'That was,' she says, and sighs, and doesn't say anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.' She shudders slightly. 'At least now we can do something about it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts an arm around Lianne's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"We should get home, huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah, we should. Emma'll be back soon-ish."

Permalink Mark Unread

They head home.  It's a somewhat more subdued trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was... yeah.

'Want to try again tomorrow?' Lianne asks. (She doesn't like giving up. And, hey, at least they saved a guy last time.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, let's.  Think you'll be able to get away?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Maybe. We'll see.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.  We've still got the scouting group, though.  And if you can't, I'll go hunting myself and kill an extra witch for you.'  She offers Lianne a small smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Heh. Yeah.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee does end up going hunting alone on Friday, and a handful more times while Lianne's still grounded.  They both keep hunting with the scouting group as well; they never seem to run out of witches to kill.  Weeks pass.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi makes her way across the American south, at a leisurely pace, stopping frequently in cities to hunt and refuel and spend a couple days in a real bed.  She's heading toward the Carolinas; Tag's noticed some odd suicide epidemics that may point to a wandering witch.  She makes the trip in a ridiculous enormous heavy-duty matte gold Jeep, her pride and joy, bought a couple years ago with lottery money after she finally got her driver's license.  She alternates between, on the one hand, posh suites in fancy hotels, and on the other, driving a ways offroad into the desert, locking the doors, and sleeping curled up in the backseat.

Permalink Mark Unread

One night, sprawled out on a hotel bed, she tries pinging Kyubey.

Permalink Mark Unread

'What's up?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're really sure magical girl teams don't work?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sadly, yes.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Why, exactly?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Magical girls just aren't meant to work together; the best magical girls are the best because they work alone.  When you do try to work together, the stresses you're under tend to drive you apart and turn you against one another.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Something I never understood about that is - ordinary humans tend to work better together than alone.  We're a social species, you know?  Lotsa people deal with stress better if they've got someone to help them through it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's true,' Kyubey says. 'But magical girls are under different kinds of stress than most people.  In my experience, that makes a lot of difference.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You think people - just deal with fighting witches differently?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'The best magical girls do.  I've been doing this for a while.  I know how to keep magical girls well-adjusted, and functional.'

Permalink Mark Unread

' - The reason I ask is, I actually ran into a team of magical girls a few weeks back.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Really,' Kyubey replies.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Based outta Jackson, Tennessee,' Tobi says.  'One of them's in her 20s, the rest are kids.  They seem really well-adjusted.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hmm.  How long have they been together?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Not sure.  Few years or so, I think.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well, there's no guarantee they'll stay together, you realize.  Based on what I've seen of magical girl teams in the past, I wouldn't expect them to.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi shrugs.  'Uh, I just shrugged to myself meaningfully, guess you couldn't see that.  They think Mal - she's the twentysomething - they think she's better at keeping them together because she's older.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I suppose it's not impossible,' Kyubey says.  'I'd certainly expect adult magical girls to be better at keeping a team together.  But better doesn't necessarily mean good.  In general, magical girls who survive to adulthood are still at their best when they work alone.  You've been doing pretty well solo, haven't you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Guess so.  How's Tag doing?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Safe, healthy.  Michigan is quiet.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's good.  You got anything to report?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Nope.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay.  Talk to you later.'

Permalink Mark Unread

February becomes March.  Kaylee's hunting more and more often, to keep her supply of grief seeds up.  On one outing with Lianne, she asks, 'Have you noticed your mood being affected by using up magic?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Now that I think about it, kinda? I'm always - more down when my soul gem's low. Don't get any runner's high after a fight until I clear my gem.'

(She's finally no longer grounded, so she's able to join Kaylee more often. Not as much as she'd like, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.  Sometimes I - let myself get low, accidentally, and stay that way for a bit, and I'm always a lot more worried about everything, or everything feels like a big drag, until I realize I haven't cleared my gem in a while.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That sounds bad. I haven't been letting myself stay low, but... There's definitely something going on.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.  "Kyubey never told you about that either?"  Under her breath, but out loud, in case he's listening.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs. "We should bring it up next meeting, in case Taylor or somebody doesn't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Definitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Lianne a side-hug and rubs her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug. "It's like - we keep finding more and more negative things. Just... I knew in my head that the world's not fair, but it's something else to be confronted with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know.  Every new thing we figure out about being a magical girl seems to make it more horrible.  And this isn't even a big deal, when I think about it, I can be conscientious about keeping my soul gem topped off.  But it's another thing he didn't tell us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially with what Mallory said about a bad mood making magic harder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if you run out of magic you - you die - so if we're ever not careful, we could end up in like a feedback loop, and..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm... Going to be a lot more careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee hugs her properly, then, tightly.  "Me too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! "We definitely need to warn the others - Taylor's so reckless with her magic - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"God, you're right - the next meeting's tomorrow, we can tell them then - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. That's - a good plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Saturday rolls around, and Lianne waits for Kaylee before heading into the meeting.

The usual crowd's here, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's pretty prompt today.  "Hey.  Shall we...?"  She gestures to the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Let's."

They're the last ones there, and are greeted by a chorus of voices when they enter.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, almost in spite of herself, when they enter.  She waves.  "Hi, everyone!"

She takes her seat, and takes a deep breath.  "So, uh, something Lianne and I noticed about using up magic..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being too low on magic seems like it can - affect your mood.  Whenever I let myself get too low, I always feel - anxious, and - constantly exhausted.  Sort of, emotionally.  And, with what you said about your mood affecting your magic - it seems like it'd be important to watch out for the possibility of a - feedback loop, sort of, where you get low on magic and then get depressed and that makes it harder to hunt enough witches to maintain a supply of soul gems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, I hadn't thought about that. I haven't really noticed anything though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds plausible to me. Not something I've strongly noticed myself, since I'm careful to stay topped off, but now that I think about it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've - let myself get lower than I probably should, from time to time.  And whenever I got around to refilling, I'd always feel great five minutes later, and only then realize how bad I'd felt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've noticed something similar, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - did any of you guys hear about it from your Kyubey?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope."

The others all shake their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

She frowns.  "Ours, mine and Lianne's, seemed really - bad at being up front about dangers, I guess.  He never told Lianne to always keep her soul gem with her, he only told me.  And I had to nag him to tell me what happens if you don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Wait, you need to keep your soul gem on you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you don't, you might pass out, I think.  Your Kyubey never told you either?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. I wonder why you need it? I'd been keeping mine with me anyways just so no one'd find it, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe one of us can ask ours sometime, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might not be a bad idea.  I've been - avoiding contact with mine, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mine's kinda busy, but I can try to catch him sometime?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Sure, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think mine's more on the up-and-up than y'all's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee grins a little.  "I hope so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's pretty nice, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

It is, in fact, a couple weeks before Taylor manages to get in touch with her Kyubey.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Kyubey! How've you been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'I've been good!  How about you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! Though I had a question. Why can't we go too far from our soul gems? It's kinda weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Your soul gem is where your magic lives.  If you go too far away from it, your magic gets harder and harder to access.  That's dangerous by itself, of course, if your fighting a witch, but not being able to access your magic can also put stress on a magical girl directly.  You might even pass out, if you're not careful about it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that makes sense! I was kinda worried it was something bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well, it is something to be careful about.  But it's hard to lose a ring, or a gem set into your outfit.  You just need to be careful with your soul gem in its bauble form, which I'm sure you already are.'  He smiles encouragingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I don't keep it in the bauble form too much. Seems too precious to be careless with, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Exactly!'

March passes into April; spring break comes and goes.  Kaylee uses her free time to hunt almost every day.  Her parents make a few cautious probes about the whatever-it-is that briefly caused her grades to slip, but she evades them every time; and since she's doing so well once again, they don't press the subject.  She can sense their worry, though.

With only a month and change left of the school year, the atmosphere is electric with anticipation of summer break.  Even Kaylee feels it; and she realizes, then, just how disconnected she's become from the other students, other than Lianne.  She can't remember the last time she bothered showing up to a GSA meeting, or creative writing club.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne has stopped going to clubs entirely. She needs to study, and when she's not studying she's hunting. She goes out with Kaylee when their schedules line up, but she gets closer with the other girls from the League - Alex, Sophia, and Taylor - and starts going on joint hunts with Sophia and sometimes Taylor, who live not too far. (Alex she solo hunts with once, taking the bus to meet her more-or-less in the middle. They're too far for frequent meetups, so they stay connected through social media).

She drifts away from her non-magical friends, though once she notices she has she starts trying to connect more. It's hard, though, talking around what she does with her time. She talks to her mom even less, though that's partially because her mom gets busier with hospital work.

It takes her a bit, but she does notice Kaylee being distressed. "Hey, you alright?" she asks one day.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," she says, unconvincingly.  "Just - no one knows about - magic stuff.  And it's so hard to talk to anyone who doesn't, they just think everything's okay, they just - worry about ordinary people things - and I have to keep it secret from them - "

She sighs.  "It's hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.  Nice long hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been getting some of that, too," she says quietly, "I hate lying. Hate it so much. And I haven't been doing clubs, so I'm not seeing as many people in person outside of lunch, and social media's a terrible substitute for just talking..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I haven't been going to clubs either.  It's just so hard to - scale myself down, to pretend the biggest thing on my mind is grades.  The school almost got attacked, and it might get attacked again, and we're the only people around who could deal with it.  And - my parents know something's up, I can't pretend to be okay well enough to fool them, I have to just - not talk about it, and keep not talking about it, while they worry, while they probably could help at least a little..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds rough. My mom's not really worrying at all, especially now that my grades are up."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That sounds even worse, honestly, for them to not even notice..."

She puts an arm around Lianne, and rubs her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean.

"I'm used to it, and it makes - everything - a lot easier. But yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee plants a gentle kiss on Lianne's head.  "It sounds - really tough - to me.  I want you to be okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "I will be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze.  "Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. Sigh. "I can't think of how to fix things with my friends, too. We just keep getting further and further apart..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know.  I think... we might not be able to.  This might just be - what it's like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want it to be like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me either.  Someday we'll be able to go public, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Hopefully."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi has a target: Tag's pretty sure he's identified a small wanderer hopping between small towns.  Now, instead of winding her way across the southern states, she's taking a straight shot south through the wilderness to try to intercept the wanderer-witch in the most likely next small town.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a woman, perhaps late teens or early twenties, running a search pattern when Tobi gets close. She isn't in costume, but has her soul gem out for dowsing; she closes her hand around it when she spots Tobi.

"You here for a reason?" she asks the other girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi's not in costume either.  She thinks she saw a soul gem in the other girl's hand, but just in case -

Her own soul gem is in its ring form; she slides it off and flips it like a coin.  If she can't see it's a soul gem it'll hopefully just look like an idle gesture.

"Just passing through."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses for a few moments, then briefly shows her soul gem clearly. "You got somewhere to stay?" she asks. "This's my territory, but it's pretty large. I don't mind others wandering in every now and then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Appreciate it, but I'm in a hurry.  There's a witch headed for a small town near here - I guess it's probably yours, if this is your territory?  I'm hoping to intercept it before it gets there, or at least before it kills too many people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the direction on that? I can probably move faster, I managed to get cheap flight, if you think it's an eminent problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a ways south of here.  I'll take any help that's on offer, I don't know how big it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. I'll call my friend, see about meeting up if it's too big for me to take safely."

She pulls out her cellphone, dials, informs the person on the other side of what Tobi passed on, then transforms in a shower of light. Her costume is reddish orange, like a fox's fur, and she has an ornate war fan on each hip.

Permalink Mark Unread

The person on the other side says she'll be there as soon as she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  I'm pretty speedy but if you can fly for cheap you'll probably get there before me, so I'll be behind you in case it turns out to be a giant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. See you there."

And shes off, flying low above the trees, dowsing with her soul gem as she heads south.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll find it easily.

The witch's barrier is a complex of great oversized rafters, rotting wooden bars and spiderwebs and mouse holes in distant walls, suspended over a void of dark roiling color.  She can guess the path to the center easily; it's long and ungeometrical, but not too hard for an experienced magical girl to navigate.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries to get a general idea of its size and power, circling around if she needs to, and checks if there's anyone in immediate danger.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's - big.  Big enough to be unwise or at least risky to take it one-on-one.

Permalink Mark Unread

She calls Bryce with an update on its location, then settles in to wait for backup, keeping her senses open for anyone trapped by the Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi zigzags her way toward the witch, trying to get a feel for its size.  She shows up before long.

"This thing's big, I'm glad I ran into you.  Your friend on her way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, she's headed over. Thanks again for the heads up, and the offer to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't mention it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce shows up not too long after, already in her black-and-gray magical girl outfit with a weapon out; she's holding a sickle attached to a fine chain that's wrapped around the palm and wrist of her other arm.  "Raine, hi - you must be ...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tobi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, thoughts on approach strategy? What're you good at, Tobi? I usually try to stay mobile, hit where the enemy's not expecting it, while Bryce focuses on deflecting attacks. We tend to try to bind enemies when we can, it's something we're both talented at. A witch this big will probably be hard to pin down, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm speedy - I'm probably faster on the ground than you, and I can fly okay, but not super-cheaply like you can - and I can hit hard with my swordstaffs, but I'm fragile.  I can deflect okay with my staffs and this guy," she gestures with one of her gauntlets, "but I can't take a direct hit to save my life.  When I'm working alone, I tend to try to get in and out of fights as fast as I can.  I can take down lots of little guys quickly, and if I'm up against a real giant I can play housefly and try to get in some critical hits.  It sounds like you guys would be better than me at engaging a mid-sized enemy for a longer period, so if we run into any bulkier familiars I can keep the littler ones off your back while you take down the big guy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me. Ideas for the witch proper?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd say it depends how big the body is.  We might be able to handle it the same way we'd handle a bulky familiar.  But if it's really huge, I'm good at being too close and fast and irritating to hit - Raine, if you've got practice hitting from behind and you can fly lots, you might be good at that too?  And Bryce can take over for me with running interference."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan. And, yeah, I can do hit-and-run pretty well. Alright, then, let's get this show on the road."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi transforms, and a garment a bit like a cape or a trench coat unfurls behind her; she rolls her neck, cracks her knuckles, and unsheathes a pair of swordstaffs from the empty air.

And in they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine draws her war fans, and keeps her eyes open as they go in, hovering above and to the back of the group if she can to get a better vantage.

Permalink Mark Unread

The way is quiet, at first; the path to the center bids them climb over or float around rafters and trusses.  Sometimes things seem to move in the darkness, on the edges of their vision, but it's a while before the first familiars make themselves known: dark rat-shapes the size of cats, tangles of dark hair and bone, like animate owl pellets.  They chitter and scamper towards the party, screech and leap through the air -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ha!"  Tobi skewers one in midair, and flicks her swordstaff to send it sliding off the blade as it bursts and shatters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine moves nimbly among the familiars, fans easily slicing through them, a small smile on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't pose much of a problem until several of them leap onto one another and merge into a slender humanoid form, hunched over on the rafter between Tobi and Bryce.  It extrudes an animal skull from its face that bares its teeth and screeches, gamboling toward Bryce -

Permalink Mark Unread

Who catches its mouth with the chain of her kusarigama before it can make contact, and then kicks it in the stomach, sending it stumbling backward along the narrow rafter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine darts in behind it, aiming for its neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

The strike connects, and the familiar's head is severed; it catches its own head in midair, spins around, and fastballs it at Raine point-blank.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mostly dodges, the head barely clipping her arm, and curses, throwing herself back for more distance.

Permalink Mark Unread

While it's distracted, Bryce whips her kusarigama towards it and lassos it -

Permalink Mark Unread

- and it disintegrates back into seven or so smaller, cat-sized familiars.  A handful go for Raine, one still mostly hand-shaped; a handful for Bryce and Tobi.

Permalink Mark Unread

She jumps, starts floating a few feet off the ground, and fiery ribbons burst from her hand, lancing at the familiars, aiming to slice into them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of them go down, but one gets through, latches onto her leg, and bites down.

Permalink Mark Unread

With a yelp and a flick of her wrist, Bryce skewers it and rips it away from Raine's shin.

Permalink Mark Unread

The handful that went for Tobi are lanced, in quick succession, by one of her staffs; once they're all taken down she twirls it, one handed, sending them spinning into the darkness.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Raine, are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," she says, focusing for a moment to heal herself. "I just need to work on my speed with those ribbons some more. Thanks for taking care of that familiar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem.  - Let's keep moving?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi nods in agreement.  "This complicates the plan a bit.  I'll try to run interference if I notice a buncha little rats coming together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep moving sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deeper and deeper; rafter-passages split and splinter at impossible angles, cavernous mouse holes spiral back on themselves without intersecting.

Periodically, familiars will emerge from the darkness, splitting and coalescing. Tobi scatters them as well as she can, flashing in and out of clusters of little ones faster than they can react, jumping away if they merge into a creature too large for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rains takes on the larger familiars, darting in to take out the familiars on the edges when they split. She mostly manages to avoid further injury.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is, after a time, a sense of many paths converging: they're nearing the center.

"All right," Tobi says, once they're only one twisting mouse-hole-passage away from the central chamber, "you guys ready for this?  It's gonna be a big one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce nods, gripping the handle of her weapon tightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls her hands, holding her fans in a ready grip, and nods too.

Permalink Mark Unread

The center of the maze consists of twenty-four wooden pathways radiating outward from a central pillar and a straw nest, suspended above a vast emptiness.  In the nest -

Barn owls, or a mutated owl-creature, feathers and talons and beaks and staring black alien eyes; it spreads an illogical array of wings, screeching and leering, its heads cocking and swaying strangely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah shit, there's people - "

A few of the suspended wooden paths do have humans on them - outsiders, not magical girls, staring enraptured up at the owl-shape or walking slowly forward.

"I'll try to keep them away from the fight, can you guys handle the witch for now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing." She glances at Bryce, then takes off for her usual hit and run opening, pouring on more speed than usual.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce leaps from path to path, aiming to circle around and flank with Raine.  She cards her hands through the empty air; thin chains trail out from between her fingers, and she lashes them through the air, aiming to bind it.  It's not much bigger than a minivan -

Or, now it is; it's growing as it moves, like an owl-fractal expanding in size and complexity, extruding and detailing limbs with which to pull itself forward, whipping out with something wing-like and claw-like to catch and tangle Bryce's chains without becoming entangled in them.

A scaly leg reaches out and blooms into a thousand talons that reach out to grab at Raine -

Permalink Mark Unread

She moves, and she's fast - faster than an unaided eye can track, possibly one of the fastest girls alive (she'd wanted teleportation; this is nearly as good) - and she's out of the way of the talons, slashing at what looks like the weakest point. Her soul gem actually dims noticeably for the first time in the hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

It screams, beaks and faces sprouting along its mass.  Bryce conjures three kusarigama, blades hooked to catch the witch's flesh, and lashes them in its direction; they catch its back and two of its limbs, and she pours magic into her legs and arms and spine and pulls back as she shortens her weapons' chains, trying to restrict the witch's movements.

It rears back, sprouting new limbs from its chest, but it can't seem to make them big or strong enough to attack with right away, giving Raine a window of opportunity.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's there, taking advantage almost as soon as the opening appears.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she's quick, and she is, she can avoid the thrashings of its miniature limbs.  But up close, the smaller limbs pose more of a threat, and they're still growing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a few nicks - her speed's currently faster than her reaction time - but she dodges the worst of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

They switch from slashing to grabbing at her; faces slide weirdly along its body with inorganic symmetry, and beaks merge into a snapping maw that distends and lunges at her like a fish's mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

She dodges and slashes and lances out with ribbons where appropriate, only mostly avoiding injuries.

She tries to identify any weak points, something she can attack with greater strength.

Permalink Mark Unread

If it has, it's not smart enough to protect them; its maw is ringed with glitteringly black eyes, its tongue visible inside its enormous beak.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her fans are so not designed for range.

She slashes at the eyes, throws a fan discus-style into the maw, tries to lacerate its center with ribbons, and she'll need to try and find an opening to clear her soul-gem sometime soon-ish.

Permalink Mark Unread

With the hooks of her kusarigama still embedded in the witch's back, Bryce starts her way around the witch in a circle, adding just enough length to her chains to let them wrap around the witch's body.

"Tap out if you need it, I can keep it occupied - "

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't quite yet - even with giving herself a hell of a lot of wiggle room - but she does press a flurry of attacks, trying to aid Bryce's efforts in binding it with a combination of 'being really distracting' and 'ribbon. Lots and lots of ribbon.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Out of the beak leaps an owl-shape like a miniature version of the original witch, and the rest of its mass dissolves into loose feathers and down - but as the new form tries to escape it gets tangled and caught in Raine's storm of ribbons, and falls to the ground on the central pedestal.  If she can get it while it's small

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll certainly try, though she'll need to tap out if this doesn't work.

Permalink Mark Unread

This strike wounds it, and wounds it grievously - it begins to grow, once again, but it grows broken, a thousand distorted images of bloodied, broken-winged birds, and it gives up on expanding itself before it's even larger than her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hooks and blades land and sink into its flesh -

Permalink Mark Unread

- and then a flash of gold, and it is impaled on a swordstaff -

Permalink Mark Unread

- finally, it crumples, and bursts, and feathers rain down on the three magical girls as the barrier dissolves into mirage and nothingness around them.

The forest returns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry I'm late," Tobi says, panting a little.  "Finally got everyone herded into a mouse hole.  They're, uh," she gestures, "over that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks." She leaves finding the grief seed to Bryce, clears her own gem on one of her spares, and starts slowly healing herself.

And over there are her people, so she goes over to them to handle the 'go home, this was all a bad dream' conversations. ...She might have to fly some of them home, come to think of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Need any help herding the kittens?" Tobi says, nodding toward the dazed Kiss victims.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I got it, but thanks for the offer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Once kittens are herded, Tobi says to Raine, "So, you mentioned having a place to stay?  I wouldn't mind going into town and finding a motel, but if you're offering..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you can crash with us, if Bryce doesn't mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine.  How long are you sticking around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Couple days, week at the most, probably.  I like to keep moving even when I'm not chasing anybody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me, then. Thanks again for the help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for your help.  Where's your place?  I gotta go rendezvous with my car, I can meet you there if that works for you guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives the address!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awesome.  See you in a bit."

Later that afternoon, a gaudy matte-gold Jeep pulls up next to Raine's place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine comes out to greet her.

The place is a pretty isolated house in the woods - you can see the neighbor's roof kinda, but that's about it. The house isn't very big, but it looks homey.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Raine.  Nice place.  Is Bryce around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. She's in her room; she likes to rest a bit after fights. Oh, come on in, make yourself at home, all that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, thanks."

She enters, takes a look around, drapes herself comfortably over a couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

The living room's a bit eclectic, most things in it brightly colored and patterned, which mostly doesn't manage to clash. The couch is very comfortable, with a surfeit of pillows. Overflowing bookshelves line the walls not taken up by furniture, and two side tables have been taken over by book stacks. There's two doors leading out of the room, in addition to the front door, both of them shut.

"Want anything to drink? There's water, a couple sodas, some fruit juice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Soda sounds good, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sodas can be produced! There are options; Raine seems to have a passion for odd sodas, though there's also Bryce's and a few popular brands kept around for occasional visitors.

"There's not any TV, sorry about that, and the place isn't really big enough for a guest room, but the couch pulls out and we have spare bedding," Raine says after getting Tobi and herself sodas (hers is in a glass bottle, light purple, and probably homemade, and smells faintly of lavender).

Permalink Mark Unread

"No worries," she says, "I'm okay as long as I can plug in my smartphone."

Tobi's pretty middle-of-the-road as far as sodas go.  She pops the top of her can and takes a sip.

"So what brings you guys out to the country?  I didn't think there was a lotta witch traffic outside of cities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a huge fan of large crowds of people, honestly. Places like this - there's a lotta despair, a lotta people going nowhere. Tends to attract witches. We're between some cities, too - I picked this place partly because it's kinda a thoroughfare, we get a ton of migratory witches. Plus with my flight, it's pretty easy to maintain a large enough territory."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Do you and Bryce hunt in the cities too?  Any competition, or is it just you and her out here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't hunt in the bigger cities, but there's - pretty much a town that outgrew its britches we occasionally hunt in. There's another girl there, she trades letting us hunt every now and then for heads ups about big witches swinging her way. And alcohol. Not too many magical girls over 21 out here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.  "Man, I've had really good luck with running into random strangers lately.  You hear all these horror stories about super territorial lone wolves with enormous witch farms, but this is the second, like, healthy well-adjusted not-at-each-other's-throats magical girl network I've run into in, like, a month."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of our neighbors is like that; I'll point out her territory on a map so you don't run into her? But, wow, there's a network? Where?" Not that she'd be letting Bryce anywhere near it, unless something truly bizarre happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Up in Jackson.  They're run by a twentysomething named Mallory, call themselves the League of Magical Girls.  I didn't think teams ever really worked out, but they seem to be pulling it off so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've heard of other duos once or twice, isn't ultra uncommon if two girls knew each other before wishing, but a proper team sounds - a lot rarer. I heard a rumor of one up north, like Oregon area once back when I was traveling more, but never spoke to anyone who'd actually met them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shit, long as they stay together we're two for two, then.  Maybe I should settle down here," she jokes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you could." Assuming she's not a 'personality mismatch' that is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce emerges from around a corner, then.  "Hi Raine, hi Tobi.  Mind if I join you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi makes room on the couch.  "Hey, fine with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Want something from the kitchen, Bryce? I'm still pretty thirsty, so, as long as I'm up... Same for you, Tobi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm okay.  Thank you, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take another soda, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine fetches another soda for herself (blueish purple) and Tobi. "You holding up okay?" she asks Bryce as she gets settled back in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great. Tobi apparently ran into a network of magical girls down in Jackson, near-ish Memphis, so we've been chatting about that sort of thing a bit. Exciting, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Sounds like it.  Are they - they don't farm, do they?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, they're on the up-and-up.  Nice folks.  Couple of 'em helped me take down another big witch I was tracking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Cool that they're willing to share kills like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys should get in touch if you're ever in the area.  I guess you don't travel much?  But still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we like staying where we are. We'll think about it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't think big teams usually worked out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what I said."  Tobi grins and shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has her own suspicions about that, given that humans are hella social and teenage girls are usually able to form cliques bigger than two even in the crucible that is high school. But, hey, Kyubey's welcome to manage most girls anyway he feels, and if that means playing the ones too stupid to notice off each other, then who is she to try and stop him?

"Might be local pressures are different. Last time I swung through Jackson - years ago, back when I was still a nomad - there weren't any active girls there, but it was a deathtrap lousy with overgrown witches. One of those outlier cities. It's possible that any girls not willing to team up just plain didn't make it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi has no such suspicions.  Why would the adorable cat creature who gave her awesome superpowers and awakened her to her magical destiny have any reason to lie to her???  Nonsense.

"That could be.  I guess selecting out all the most solitary girls is one way to get a group who can work together.  At least a couple of them were late arrivals, though, after the area had already stabilized, and they seemed to get along okay too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I think most girls, if the established culture was cooperation, would probably be a bit less antisocial, too. We're probably just in a feedback loop - girls start out all bright-eyed and bushy tailed, find a hostile world, and let the culture change them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense.  Kyubey, my Kyubey, seems to think it's got something to do with the way we're wired, like magical girls are just supposed to be solitary predators in a way that humans aren't.  But that could be part of it too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless something about wishing changes us, I find that unlikely."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi shrugs.  "Who knows.  Kyubey never mentioned anything like that to me, I don't think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't feel different when I wished, but that might not be the type of thing you notice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, me neither," Tobi says, sounding unconcerned.  "What about you, Bryce?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head, looking a little distant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Comforting lean and a concerned glance. "Anyways, are you heading anywhere particular, or just wandering?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This was the end of the line, actually," Tobi says.  "I caught up to the witch I was tracking here, I don't have any plans from here on out yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if we all get along you could hang out here a bit, or there's some nice places more westwards. Have you been to California? San Diego and San Francisco are fun, though at least a few years ago they didn't have the friendliest girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never been that far west, but I'll keep it in mind.  You guys seem cool, though, I wouldn't mind sticking around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The house isn't getting any bigger anytime soon, but if you don't mind the couch, you're welcome to stay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've slept in worse places, don't worry.  Thanks for putting me up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I remember my nomad days. Anyways, it's no problem whatsoever, it's nice to meet new girls every now and then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises her soda in a mock toast.  "I'll say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's to not running into assholes on literally every corner." And she raises her glass a bit, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheers."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sip.

"So, uh, what do you guys usually do for dinner, anyway?  I'm getting a bit hungry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm - lots of things. I'm big into home-cooked stuff, we have some leftovers from last time I cooked I think, but we also have some frozen TV dinners and instant noodles for when we're feeling lazy. What're you in the mood for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm not crazy about frozen dinners, but I'm not picky.  Leftovers sounds fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leftovers can be had, then.

"So where've you been in your wandering? Jackson, obviously. Anywhere else interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"All over the South, lately.  Mmm, a while back I ran into another friendly girl in Nashville, wound up pointing her towards the League.  I don't know if she joined up or what.  I don't do a lot of sightseeing but I get to stay in lots of fancy hotels - my wish was to win the lottery, so I could do the magical girl thing without worrying about a side job for a while.  I've been farther north, but it's been a while ... Oh, one time I checked out this big kinda tourist trappy place in Wisconsin called the House on the Rock, have you heard of it?  It was - weird, it's a big building you can walk through, all moodily lit and maze-y.  There's clockwork orchestras and fortune machines and rooms full of, like, collections, of dolls and suits of armor and fancy guns, all kindsa shit.  Could've been a witch's labyrinth, it was really cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem to have good luck with girls, I've mostly run into jerks while wandering. A clever wish, too, maybe it made your power 'luck.' And I think I heard someone mention that place once, it sounds familiar, but I've never been."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've definitely had my fair share of jackasses," she grins.  "But I've had really good luck lately, yeah, I don't know what it is.  And, yeah, if you're ever in Wisconsin you should check it out.  Guess you might not have the chance now that you're holding down a territory, though."

"What about you guys?  Raine, you mentioned you used to be a nomad, yeah?  You got any stories?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Plenty! Most of them seem to revolve around the magical girls she's met, and how they were all creatively terrible, or pretending to be nice but secretly untrustworthy. She glances at Bryce a few times.

(There are a few not-warning-about-trusting-other-people stories thrown in, she got to see a Shakespeare production in San Diego this one time before the local girl drove her out, the zoo there is cool if you're ever in the area, she went to Pride in San Francisco once, there's kinda a semi-truce during the festival itself or at least there used to be, that's probably the best time to go...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Stories are heard and told and exchanged as dinner proceeds, and it's all great fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Bryce, perhaps conspicuously, declines to share any of her own stories, but is happy to talk about the other girls'.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually dinner wraps up, and though Raine's fine continuing with stories until it's been dark for a while, at which point she yawns, looks at the clock, and says, "Wow, it's gotten late. Let me get the couch set up for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She decouches.  "Need any help or you got it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got it! Don't trouble yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, thanks."  She stands aside for the unfolding of the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

And couch-bed can be set up.

Permalink Mark Unread

While Tobi changes and gets ready for bed in the bathroom.

"Night, guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Night!" And she retreats from the living room (checking subtly if Bryce looks like she wants to talk).

Permalink Mark Unread

And indeed, as they're both getting ready for bed, Bryce quietly asks, voice not-quite-convincingly casual: "Is it really that awful out there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Concerned glance. "It can be. The culture's... Pretty bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tobi seems okay..." she says, not sounding hopeful.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She might be, and I'm hoping she is, but most people do, at first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat.

"I'm here for you, though, no matter what happens, or what anyone else does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze and back off, clasping her shoulders. "You're a good person, Bryce. I'm glad I met you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a little half-smile, like she doesn't quite believe her.  "Thanks.  I - Thank you, for everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no problem, at all. I like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like you too, Raine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww, good.

"Who knows? Maybe Tobi will turn out fine. It's rare, but some people do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's hoping."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. Then checking the clock. "Probably should meander bedwards. Tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sounds good.  G'night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Night!"

And: bed.

The next day, she's up bright and early, slipping out of her window to go on a morning flight, sweeping for witches half out of habit.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she gets back, Tobi is still dozing, strewn diagonally across the unfolded couch, drooling slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce is up, quietly making herself breakfast; she looks a shade tense, and she's keeping one eye on Tobi where she sleeps.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," she says softly to Bryce, so as to not wake up their guest. "How're things going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not bad," Bryce says.  "Want some eggs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me." Glance over at Tobi, then lowering her voice, and teasingly: "You know, I somehow doubt she'll turn in her sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce laughs a little, halfheartedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You holding up okay? I can tell her to leave today if she stresses you out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it's okay.  But thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi wakes up properly, then.  "Mrrng," she says, and wipes her eyes.  "Morning," she says again.  She sniffs.  "Eggs?  There enough for me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning! And there should be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, awesome.  Smells good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."  Soon enough, eggs are served.

Permalink Mark Unread

Om nom nom.

"Sleep well, Tobi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Vigorous noms, of excessively salted and peppered fried eggs.

"I did, yeah.  Always do after a big fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hers are flavored with hot sauce. She gives no indication that this is anything strange.

"Makes sense. I get really restless, makes me wanna fly around some."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi nods, and swallows a truly prodigious amount of egg white.  "What about you, Bryce?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs noncommittally.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is a bit more awkward than she'd been planning, she might not be able to 'recruit' Tobi now. Might still be salvageable, though.

"How often do you get into big fights?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once every few weeks, maybe once a month.  Got a friend who helps me track 'em down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good you have tracking help, but I wouldn't want to be going into fights like that without someone to have my back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've had some close calls," she says.  She sounds almost smug about it.  "But I've never found anyone who'd want to pick up and travel with me.  Plus my contact's kinda private, he wouldn't be wild about bringing new folks into the fold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You pretty attached to being nomadic, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  I'm good enough to take down the really big ones, that's where I should be, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense. I used to like roaming, but settling here with Bryce is good. I like where I've ended up." Someone chaffing at the bit to get out and about might not be the best for her little collection, especially given Tobi's connections to this mystery help - eh, not all opportunities can be seized. She'll see about shooing her on before Bryce gets attached.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a nice setup.  Impressive, too, I've never known someone to hold on to more than one city at a time before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! Two of us and really low population density helps, I think most potentials out here just move somewhere with more witches." (She has actually had to scare one off before, though she's never mentioned it to Bryce.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, though."  She mimes raising a glass, but with a forkful of egg instead.  "Nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm! We got slightly lucky with some of our neighbors, too. They're either neutral and willing to cooperate some or don't want to tangle with a group."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That must be nice.  My neighbors, like my original neighbors ... it's been a while, but they were mean.  All the worst stuff your Kyubey warns you about.  Probably part of why I struck out on my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, that sounds no fun. I didn't really have neighbors starting out, but... The people there weren't exactly good." She got hers, though, on the one who dared stab her in the back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  It all worked out, though, I got to be a wandering monster hunter."  She flashes a grin and waggles her eyebrows.

She leans back in her chair, hands behind her head.  "That was some nice breakfast.  Thanks for cooking, Bryce.  - Uh, you guys mind handling the cleanup?  I should check in with my partner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all; I've got cleanup, Bryce, since you cooked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Raine."

As Raine handles the dishes, Bryce retreats to the living room, curling up in a cozy chair and perusing her phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi steps outside for some rapid-fire shop talk on the phone with Tag regarding North Carolinian crime reports as of this morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine's kitchen window is conveniently open, and she's figured out how to enhance her hearing with a small bit of magic, but what she picks up is mostly boring. But hey, at least it's convenient practice.

She hums softly as she works. (Listening in? Who? Her? No, never!)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Caught one out in the wilderness, it was pretty big.  Me and a couple friendly locals took it out.  Might not be easy to catch the drop, if it was, we're kinda out in the middle of nowhere."

("You got coordinates?")

"Yeah, just a sec ..."  A few moments of silence, while Tobi retrieves her GPS coordinates.

("Well, if that wasn't it, then if we're lucky it'll hit Asheville next and I'll be able to catch the spike.  But it's been a bit wonky, I'm not a hundred percent on where it'll decide to head.")

"I'll head toward Asheville next if you don't spot it before then.  But I'm gonna stay put for a bit.  I'm pretty sure that was it, and if not it'll give you a bit to pick up the trail."

("Your call.  Talk to you in a bit.")

"See ya, Tag."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm. Planning to stick around could be bad or good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She returns, none the wiser of Raine's eavesdropping.  "Heya.  So, uh, what do you guys do all day out here when you're not fighting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Read. Browse the internet. Go on walks, or head to one of the towns. If you're looking for something touristy, there's, like, nature stuff. Hiking and all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, going for a run in the forest sounds nice, actually.  You guys wanna come along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awesome.  Why don't you guys lead the way, I bet you know all the best spots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. There's some good hiking a bit to our west, a nice view at the top and everything, no too many people go there either, or there's a running path along the river."

Permalink Mark Unread

"River sounds nice.  Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

A run along the river it is.

It is exceptionally scenic, and they hardly see anyone else, except for a few people in kayaks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi never quite enjoys scenic views of nature as much as she feels like she is supposed to, but she knows how to appreciate a pretty riverside path.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce, as is usual for her, is quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine can fill in some of the silence, but does just focus on running and looking at nature a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, though, they have to head back, for a probably-fairly-late lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which Raine's fine preparing - she even mostly understands that other people don't share her bizarre tastes, so that's one thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Tobi will surely mostly applaud her cooking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good!

The rest of the day goes similarly. Raine runs a broad-sweeping patrol for witches in the afternoon, doesn't find anything more threatening than a familiar, helping confirm that Tobi might've gotten her target.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi texts Tag with the good news before bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

And to sleep, finally.

Permalink Mark Unread

At last!  Tobi sprawls herself to bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Bryce can't sleep.

She thinks about Tobi and she thinks about Raine.  Tobi might be dangerous, and she's staying with them, in the house.

(Bryce herself might be - Raine's being so accomodating, letting her stay here at all, offering to send Tobi off for her sake.)

(Raine doesn't know what she did.)

(Tell her, tell her and then she will know, and if she sends you away you will deserve it -)

She rolls over and buries her face in her pillow and does not fall asleep.

(Raine is the only person she can trust, Raine trusts her -)

(Raine is wrong to trust her -)

(She wouldn't be able to survive without Raine.  No one else is safe.)

(Do you deserve to survive?)

She rolls over and buries her face in her pillow and does not fall asleep.

(She isn't worthy of Raine's kindness -)

(Maybe Tobi is evil and you can run away with her and deserve each other -)

(Maybe you will be able to be happy -)

(Do you deserve to be happy?)

She rolls over, and buries her face in her pillow, and does not fall asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets up, to get herself a drink of water, half just to have anything to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's dark, but she knows the house well.  She's more ginger than she would be normally going through the living room, to avoid knocking against the unfolded couch.  There's a pitcher of cold water in the fridge - ice cold water sounds good, right now, actually.  She manages to serve herself without knocking anything over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmrm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce jumps so violently that most of her glass of water winds up slopping down her nightshirt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi rubs her eyes.  "Mmh, shit, sorry.  You okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - yeah.  I - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't bite, don't worry," Tobi says.  She sits up.  "Sorry to startle you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - You, uh, wanna go get changed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and disappears around the corner.

Permalink Mark Unread

And returns shortly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," Tobi says.  "Gotcha some more water."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce takes the glass, a little hesitantly.  " - Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

As Bryce turns to go, Tobi stops her.

"Hey, uh - are you, like, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I -"

(Tell her and then at least someone will know -)

Permalink Mark Unread

She sucks in a steadying breath, tries to put on something like a smile.

"Yeah!  I'm fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.  Cuz - I know this shit gets tough, and, like, granted, I am a random stranger, but if you want someone to talk to..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've - got Raine..." she says, inflecting it in a way that makes it somehow not exactly sound like a no-thank-you.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, but having just one person to talk to can drive you a little crazy no matter how great they are.  I got my Kyubey, I got my guy who does my tracking for me, I got a bunch of internet friends, and I still go a little crazy sometimes.  I mean, internet people I can't tell about shit, but still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one would -"

She stops.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just - no one's - really trustworthy, I guess," Bryce says.  "Especially magical girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...So, like," Tobi says, "I do kinda get the impression there's something about people like us that means we don't work well together in teams.  But I don't think that means we're all, like, evil, you know?  Being a nomad, you meet a lot of strange magical girls, and - yeah, lots of 'em do fucked up shit.  But plenty of them are friendly if you just run into them in a club or something.  Raine's pretty cool as magical girls go, and I wouldn't bet on finding another League, but that doesn't mean anyone you meet's gonna kill you on sight."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That's not what Raine says."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, maybe we've had different experiences," Tobi says, a little dubiously.  "And, like, if I'm prying too much and you wanna tell me to fuck off, feel free," she adds, smirking.  "But if you ever do want another perspective on magic shit, feel free to shine the refrigerator light in my eyes again.  Actually don't do that, talk to me during the day."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi grins.  And yawns.  "Probably not a bad idea to do the sleep thing, though.  See you tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.  "Good night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Night."

Permalink Mark Unread

As Tobi lies down and rolls over, Bryce returns to her own bed, and curls up in it, and eventually does fall asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, she goes on her morning flight/ patrol again, then checks on Bryce.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's cooking breakfast again, so that's probably a good sign.

"Hi, Raine.  Nice patrol?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. How're you doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.  I wound up talking to Tobi a little bit last night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't sound super okay. What happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She actually seemed - not bad?  I don't know.  She just offered to talk to me about stuff.  She thinks, like... other magical girls are less dangerous than we think.  Like, we're supposed to be solitary, but that doesn't mean we're inherently dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some people are eternal optimists, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs.  "I guess.  At least Tobi is - maybe okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She might be. We don't know her very well, though."

Definitely not keeping Tobi.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon, Tobi wakes, and breakfast is served.

Permalink Mark Unread

Later that day, when Tobi and Raine are both out on a run:

"Hey Raine?  I don't know if Bryce told you, but - she accidentally woke me up last night and we got to talking.  She seems kinda - not holding up great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. She has some - things in her past. We're working on it, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like she thinks you're the only trustworthy magical girl in the world.  I was thinking about putting her in touch with the League, did I tell you about them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That is not good.

"Yeah, you mentioned them. I don't know that she's ready? Especially with how worked up she's been the last few days, this's a - bad time for her. If you leave their numbers with me I can get them to her once everything's calmer, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know her better than me.  I'll probably tell them about her, too, so they know who she is if she decides to get in touch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ask her first maybe, about telling other people. But otherwise that works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, fair.  - Although I guess if I'm gonna ask her to give her info to the League, it'd be a bit weird to not just give her the League's contact info then.  Plus, like - how bad is having the option to talk to someone else really gonna fuck her over?  I mean, you do know her better than me, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd make her really anxious mostly, since she'd be torn between talking to them and not, and she'd fret about both decisions. But, yeah, that is a bit of a pickle. Hm... You could give them my contact details? She often asks me to make calls for her anyways, it helps with the anxiety, so I'd probably be contacting them first."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "That works.  Maybe I'll stick around for a while, or swing back this way in a week or two?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Swinging back this way might work out better. Don't get me wrong, we like having company, but the house tends to feel crowded after a few days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I gotcha.  Me and my tech guy are pretty sure we got the right witch, so I can head out in a day or two, say."  She fishes in her pocket for her phone, and calls up Mallory's contact info.

Permalink Mark Unread

Contact information can be exchanged then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awesome.

Run continues, and eventually concludes; she calls up Mallory to give her Raine's info.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory thanks her and asks for her impressions of the girls, if she doesn't mind giving them.

Permalink Mark Unread

(She ducks out of the house to make this call, and speaks in a low voice - though she still doesn't know exactly how much Raine can enhance her hearing.)

"They seem nice.  Bryce seems like she's - going through some shit.  She's not taking to it well.  And, uh - just, let me know if you don't hear from them in a week or two?  I could be imagining things, but there was something a little weird about how much Raine was down on Bryce talking to someone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does sound concerning. I'll keep you updated."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Subtlety remains not her strong suit. She'll need to be more careful from now on.

Permalink Mark Unread

" 'Preciate it.  Talk to ya later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talk to you later, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She returns to the house for lunch.  She doesn't bring up the League with Bryce, alone or with Raine there, for the rest of the day.  It feels like going against her better judgment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine is perfectly pleasant and solicitous and doesn't mention the League, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce shows no signs at all of soul-melting self-loathing except for the occasional hint of forcedness in her smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can be a whole household of not-talking-about-it then.

(Raine's not really talking at Bryce about Emotional Things, but she's making sure to be generally attentive and helpful in subtle ways.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi observes, with her friendliest and most encouraging grin on, and does not observe any obvious attempts to make Bryce's issues any worse, at least.  So there's that?

Well, if Bryce doesn't think Tobi is trustworthy, Tobi will demonstrate trustworthiness by being cool and nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine isn't as good at subtle as she could be, but she does know what she's doing. Her goal is a nice, happy-as-possible-given-the-givens Bryce who is thoroughly hers, not a melted puddle of self-hatred. Admittedly, the 'hers' is a bit more important. Mostly because she knows that as long as she has Bryce she can do damage control, and make sure the other girl's fine. How's she supposed to look after Bryce if she wanders off?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi's never tried to unravel this sort of web before, so she doesn't pick up on much of this.  She is not, by nature, a conspirator.  And if Bryce doesn't want to leave, Tobi's at a bit of a loss for what to do for her.

But she keeps one eye on Bryce, makes sure she at least seems happy, and resolves that yes, she'll definitely be circling back this way at least once, especially if Mal and the rest of the League never hear from Bryce.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually the day does end.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce sleeps a little more soundly tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thinking of heading out today?" Raine asks the next morning over breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yeah, I think so.”  Nom.  “May swing back this way to say hi, but I won’t make you guys unfold the couch again.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll be glad to have you, either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, thanks.  Thinking of looping my way around the Carolinas if my tech guy doesn't notice any big witches around.  Know any good tourist traps?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Charleston, South Carolina's always pretty. Got some good architecture, neat ghost tours. The local magical girl is fine if you don't hunt in her territory, though she sometimes plays pranks on tourists. I wouldn't suggest hunting there, that girl always knows who's doing what and will attack. If beaches are your thing, there's Myrtle Beach, but I like the Outer Banks better, there's more non-beachy things to do. Been through Boone a few times, that's more nature stuff but it's fun even if hiking isn't your thing. There's a theme park nearish Boone, Tweetsie Railroad, that I loved as a kid, though I don't know if it's any actual good when you're not knee high." There's also a few smaller, more spend-an-hour places she can point out, little hidden gems that you only really learn as you get to know a place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi whips out her phone to take notes.  "Good stuff.  On a related note, I gotta go get packed."  She wipes her mouth and pushes away her breakfast plate.  "Good breakfast, Bryce, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.  "You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for coming!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Had a good time, thanks for having me."

Tobi packs, which consists of stuffing dirty clothes into a front pocket of her suitcase and tossing it in her trunk; she says her goodbyes, and departs.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Carolinas are largely rural, and very scenically so, if you like rolling mountains and misty forests. Witches cluster mostly around the population centers, like usual, but there's decently high numbers even out in the sticks. Most of the girls are territorial, but as long as she avoids hunting around Charleston she'll get warnings rather than an outright attack. Boone is great for nature things, the railroad is probably more enjoyable for small children but isn't that bad as an adult, and Charleston is as pretty as promised with an enormous, sprawling outdoor market selling all sorts of crafts, ghost tours (the local girl apparently likes to crash these), and general city attractions. Myrtle Beach isn't super crowded this time of year, but is definitely geared towards large beach-going crowds, while the Outer Banks varies more and has the small, interesting little nooks like Raine described.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi hits as much as she can in a week.  Magical girls crashing ghost tours sounds hilarious, and she takes a few in the hopes of being spooked.  Wilderness is fun once in a while but she mostly sticks to population centers, purchasing little souvenirs, sleeping in motels, enjoying the sidelong glances drawn by her gaudy matte-gold jeep.

Some day she's gonna have to figure out some way of making money, preferably before she burns through all her lottery winnings, but today is not that day.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Charleston magical girl seems to have figured out some truly innovative tricks for pranks. Nothing as blatant as levitating things, but stuff moves when people aren't looking, there are soft spooky sounds, occasional flickering lights out of the corner of your eye...

The other magical girl must notice she's there, because the spookiness increases around her and gets every-so-slightly more blatant and horror-show-esque.

(The guide looks eminently long-suffering.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi has a good time being terrified.  She tries to catch the other girl's eye so she can wink, but she's too good for Tobi to spot her.  She contents herself with a knowing smirk at the tour guide at the end of the journey.

Permalink Mark Unread

The tour guide has the distinct look of someone not paid enough for this.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, and departs.

Permalink Mark Unread

In a few days, lounging somehow solemnly in a pleasantly seedy motel, she calls Mal.

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. Holding up alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not bad.  I'm out in Charleston.  There's supposed to be a local girl who haunts a ghost tour out here.  I've been trying to catch her eye, but no luck so far.  How's the League?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've been doing well. Haven't managed to recruit any more girls yet, but I'm not too surprised. They tend to come in bursts, and we're close to saturation point for the area anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you ever hear from Bryce?  Or Raine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got a couple texts. Mostly confirming numbers and then that they'd contact us in an emergency, or we could contact them. Pretty impersonal."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Bryce didn’t want to talk?  Seemed like she was going a little crazy with only Raine to talk to.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Didn't hear anything like that from either, but the texts were very - something I'd expect from a particularly impersonal editor. They weren't like that in person?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like, uptight and brusque?  Not really.  Raine seemed friendly.  Bryce was I guess reserved, except one night when we got to talking and it seemed like she was in a bad place.  She talked like every magical girl other than Raine was, like, waiting to pounce, so I guess if she still thinks that she could be nervous or something.  I was hoping Bryce would eventually just wanna talk to someone else and figure out we're not all bad.  The whole thing kinda sketched me out a little, to be honest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does sound concerning. How did Raine talk around and to Bryce?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She frowns, thinks.  "Now I think about it, Raine had a lot of horror stories.  Every other magical girl she told us about was some creepy witch farmer.  Like, lots of us are territorial, but we're not all that bad, you know?  I didn't see her - trying to put Bryce down or warn her off me, or anything, but I guess she could've been hiding it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There could be other things going on, but - that doesn't sound like a healthy situation, no. I'm not a social worker, so I don't have a lot of specific experience, but in general - it's good to try to leave someone like Bryce an out of the situation, for when she's ready to take it. She might not realize she can leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Well, I gave her the League’s info...”

She frowned.  “I gave Raine the League’s info.  Because Raine thought Bryce would agonize too much over whether to contact you if she knew about the League.  Shit.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd probably try to make sure Bryce knew how to contact us? Or at least someone other than Raine. But I haven't actually talked to them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm gonna head back that way and talk to Bryce directly this time.  God, this feels more and more fucked the more I think about it.  Raine used to be a nomad, she's gotta know we aren't actually all that bad, and she's feeding Bryce horror stories.  Jesus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bryce might react poorly if you suggest she leave right away; having an open door is better than someone trying to push you through it."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I mean, if you say so.  But if Raine actually never gave Bryce the League's info, and Bryce finds out, I can't imagine her sticking around that long in any case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People in relationships like that don't always - make the decisions that seem to be obvious from the outside. From her perspective, Raine's her friend and protector, you're a stranger who's possibly trying to deprive her of her anchor in the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense, I guess.  Think it'd be a good idea to try to stick around longer this time, at least?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly. It depends on whether Bryce perceives you as threatening her space? And whether she does better with exposure for friendliness. I can also try swinging out there, sometime, I think the group here can just about manage without me for a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might be a good idea.  You might be better at this sort of thing than me.  But I'll definitely drop by and make sure Bryce actually knows about the League, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for looking out for her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's what I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, says her pleasantries, and wraps up the call.

Permalink Mark Unread

In a few days, she returns to Raine's house in the wilderness.  She knocks.

Permalink Mark Unread

The house is still there, and Raine is the one who answers the door.

"Hey! Tobi! Didn't expect you back so soon. Come in, come in..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts on a smile and shrugs.  "I was in the area.  Nice to see you again!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's waved inside.

"You been doing well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have.  Thanks for the sightseeing tips, I had a good time.  Is Bryce around or is it just you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome! And, yeah, Bryce is up in her room. Want me to see if she's up for company?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, why don't you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sends Tobi a searching look, then says, "Help yourself to the fridge," and heads to Bryce's room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce's door is shut; she answers when Raine knocks.

"Hi, Raine.  What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. You'll never guess who just showed up at our door."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Is Tobi back already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. She didn't say why, just that she was passing through?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's not here hunting again?  Is she - staying, like she did last time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Didn't really ask, though she was curious if you were around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really?  Me specifically?"  Her mind goes back to the midnight conversation they had, the last time Tobi visited.  "What did she say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, thanked me for the sightseeing tips, asked if you were around or if it was just me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.  ...I could come down and say hi.  She seemed actually pretty nice last time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. With any luck she'll stay that way, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and follows Raine downstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine leads the way, calling out to Tobi, "Found her!" when she reaches the living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi is perusing the fridge.

"Hey Bryce!  Uh, not to like, offer you some of your own food or anything, but as long as I'm getting myself something you want me to grab you a snack?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, thanks."  She perches herself on the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suit yourself.  Raine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, just one of the bottled sodas, if you don't mind - doesn't really matter which."

Permalink Mark Unread

She consolidates her snacks, picks whichever one seems like the weirdest color for a soda to be for Raine, and returns to the living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Weirdest' definitely seems like a hit, going by Raine's cheery, "Thanks!"

"So," Raine continues once Tobi's settled in, "Tourist traps were touristy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh, this is so weird, half her mind is trying to suss out exactly how evil Raine is and half is still just endeared by her love of weird off-brand sodas.

“They were,” she says, putting on a cheery demeanor as best she can.  “I didn’t manage to properly meet whoever’s haunting the ghost tour, but you can’t have everything.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I've mostly just heard about her from others? She's not super social apparently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah well."  She shrugs.  "Still fun.  How have you guys been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same old, same old, pretty much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm.  She has a vague intuition that it would be a bad idea to just ask Raine straight out, in front of Bryce, whether she ever gave Bryce the League's contact info, try to blow the whole thing open right away.  That sort of thing probably works better on TV than in real life.

She keeps up a veneer of small talk, keeps a smile on her face, spends the day waiting to see if she can wrangle a few minutes alone with Bryce.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such an opportunity does, eventually, arise, when Raine steps out to check on something.

That something being, unfortunately for her, enough of a distance that she can't eavesdrop, and that she'll be gone at least thirty minutes - she'll be able to sprint back faster if there's an emergency, but she'd strongly rather not do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right, here we go.

"Hey Bryce?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey, remember that time I was here last time and we talked in the middle of the night and you almost started crying?

Hey, I think Raine is purposely making you think everyone else in the world is evil so she's the only person you ever trust.

Hey, Raine straight up impersonated you to the League of Magical Girls so they'd think she could be trusted to look after you.

"Did Raine ever give you the League of Magical Girls' contact information?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "Why do you ask?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay yeah nope this is definitely 100% fucked

"Well," Tobi says slowly, "because I gave Raine their info to give to you. I just figured she would've by now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She never said anything about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She didn't even say she had it?" Tobi says. "To let you decide whether you wanted it or not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce shakes her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Okay, look, can I say something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce flinches a little. "What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh jeez, no, I'm not like mad at you or anything. I just don't know how responsible it was of Raine to keep you in the dark like that. Like, I heard from Mal that Raine was talking to them, she's not just - out of touch, or something. You seriously had no idea I gave her the phone number to get in touch with the League?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why - would she not want you to talk to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wouldn't it be ~so convenient~ if the person you're lying to about the awful things you've done was actually the one sneakily manipulating you. Then you'd be totally blameless, huh.

It's a thought she's had before. But Bryce is the one keeping secrets, in this relationship. Raine has nothing to hide.

She shrugs noncommitally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"- Okay, never mind," Tobi says. "Like, maybe I'm full of shit, it's not like I've known you two too long. I just think it's better to have more people you can reach out to. So. I'm gonna give you Mal's phone number, and if you want you can just throw it away as soon as I turn my back."

She retrieves a notepad, jots down a phone number, tears out the page, folds it up, hands it over.

"Seriously. You don't even have to look at it if you don't want, if you really think Raine's call was the right one. I just think it should be up to you, whether you have the information. And I won't give your number to Mal or anybody unless you tell me to. She can already get in touch with Raine, but if you don't want her calling you directly, she won't be able to. Okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce nods.

- There's something actually kind of nice about that. Raine probably would've just decided for her whether to let this Mal person try to talk to her. And that's comforting, in a way, to have someone looking out for her best interests. But... but.

She takes the folded-up notepad page, pockets it. "Thanks, Tobi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "No problem. Magical girls gotta look out for each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Grin. It's even a little genuine. (Raine said you wouldn't be like this / I don't deserve how nice you're being to me / Raine thinks I'm a good person, maybe I do ... She shoves all of it down.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Tobi doesn't catch much of that. And what she does - well, it might be the best she's gonna get for now. She'll keep her fingers crossed that Bryce gets in touch with Mal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine returns a good bit before the promised time, but not so fast she's cutting off their talk.

"House didn't catch fire while I was gone I see!" she says, voice somewhat joking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not burning down houses is my specialty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An example we can all aspire to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bryce giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try."

She'll stick around a bit, make light conversation, appear casual and friendly toward Raine.  Not bring up the League.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raine isn't as warm as she's been in the past, but she isn't really unfriendly, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tempting though it is to loom over Bryce until she's out from under Raine's thumb, Tobi's not gonna stay overnight.  As the afternoon winds into evening, she says her goodbyes: "Nice seeing you guys again.  Keep in touch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll certainly try!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you around, Tobi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See ya."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shuts the door, and sighs, and lets her face fall into the scowl she's been suppressing all afternoon.

She stalks off to her Jeep and drives away.

Permalink Mark Unread

(That night, Bryce - doesn't call the League.)

(But - she has their number.)

(She could talk to Raine about it.  But she doesn't think she wants to be told whether to call them or not.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you like having her here?" she asks. "Tobi? It's just, you always seem so worried when she's around..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs.  "I guess - I've always been nervous around new people, even before I became a magical girl.  Tobi really seems okay, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm just worried she's making you unhappy."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's been thinking about that, too, lately.

"I think... that might just be how it is, for me, with people I haven't known for a while.  I was nervous around you, too, at first, but you turned out okay."  Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins back. "Maybe she will turn out alright, who knows? Just... I want you to be careful, you know? Don't want my best friend getting hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a familiar stab of guilt, at Raine's words.  Both because Raine obviously thinks so highly of her, and Raine doesn't know what Bryce's wish was; and now because she feels like she's going behind Raine's back in... (In what?  Accepting the League's contact information from Tobi?  Not letting Raine decide for her whether to get in touch?)

But she smiles, nonetheless.

"...It seems like Tobi's already turned out okay, honestly.  We fought the owl-witch together, to stop it from getting to the city and hurting people, remember?  And she was the one who was tracking it."  And that was how they'd met.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely, I think she's better than most, but - people can be deceptive, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Why doesn't she ever back off

She shrugs.  Noncommittally.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll sort of sideways hug Bryce. "I'm sorry if I upset you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.  "S'okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

She'll drop the Tobi issue.

For now, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne doesn't get significantly better about keeping in touch with non-magical friends as the year progresses and school ends, unfortunately.

It's hard, and becomes harder the longer she waits, and there's this barrier between them all -

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, neither does Kaylee.  Her parents don't press the issue, but they're still palpably Concerned, and she hates hates hates keeping secrets from her dad.

But she's got Lianne to talk to, and the rest of the League.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," Lianne says one day, while they're hanging out and sort of waiting for graduation. Classes are in the 'exams are over so we're making you all watch Inspiring movies' phase. "My mom okayed the road trip. Since I got mostly A's somehow. Sister's debating coming along but she needs to get ready for college so hopefully not..."

Quiet, then, "But I'm not sure telling Emma would be a horrible idea. Tobi manages to have someone normal in the know, and... Emma's not super nice but I think? She wouldn't be horrible about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was Tobi's advice?  That they should know the risks and know to stay out of trouble and have some way to help on their end... If she's gonna come along it would be useful for her to be able to cover with your mom, I guess.  I don't think I know much about your sister.  What's she like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. She's good at staying out of trouble, and - good at knowing risks? And being level headed? But - if I met an alternate universe version of her that sacrificed a nation for immortality I wouldn't be surprised. She's a pretty good liar - mom believes her on everything, and so do most people. I think she already knows something's up, too."

"But she's protective of me. She's gotten into it with mom, before, when mom was being mean. She's given up opportunities to help me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.  "She... sounds like she'd be a good choice to cover for us with your mom, yeah.  She sounds like she'd be good at that.  ...Do you want us to tell her together?  Or on your own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"On my own. If she reacts poorly I don't want her knowing for sure about you being magic too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"  - Okay.  That sounds, um -

Are you sure you want to tell her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I think I'm just being paranoid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.

Your family sounds - really tough, sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know, if you ever - need to get away - you can come to me, right?"

(In whatever sense she decides to interpret "get away.")

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do. Thanks, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are friends" 'girlfriends' "for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Friendly shoulder bump. "Helping me stay sane, apparently."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bump!  "Always happy to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. You have any ideas for the roadtrip? I've never thought much about touristy stuff... I think Route 66 passes near here maybe? That's kinda a classic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me neither, to be honest.  I think my family's always so tired out from traveling for work that none of us ever want to do it for fun," she laughs.  "But Route 66 could be interesting, yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It goes near a lot of cool stuff, too. Crosses a pretty good chunk of the country."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds fun!  Once school ends I'll be able to get my driver's license - did I tell you, my sixteenth birthday is the last day of school this year? - so you won't be stuck chauffeuring me all over the country."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neat! Are you having a party?" She starts planning Kaylee's gift in her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not this year."  'I don't really feel that close to people in my year right now, because of - magic stuff.'  "But you can come over, if you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, same.'

Out loud: "I'd love to!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!  You wanna just get off at my stop on the last day?  Assuming your mom goes for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to ask, but yeah, that works for me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fingers crossed!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm excited for that! You know, my birthday's at midsummer, we could try to find a really neat stop for that - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'd love to!"  And now she's planning Lianne's present.  "I can look up places, or if there's anywhere you've always wanted to see...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't know! I like hiking. 'Grand Canyon' might be too cliche - and too hot - and we'll probably have passed it by then... Some cool mountain or another, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little as Lianne finds herself backpedaling.  "Hiking sounds fun!  I've never been hiking in the mountains, I bet it's really pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a date! Well. When we pick one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

She agrees, and then goes about her day.

And then it's time to talk to mom. Her mom approves going to Kaylee's for her birthday, and the road trip, on the caveat her grades stay up.

And then it's time to talk to Emma.

Lianne waits for her mom to be out, then sort of goes to awkwardly hover in her sister's doorway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey squirt," Emma calls from her desk. "Need something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. Yeah. Need to talk to you. About something really important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Come in, then. Guessing mom can't know, since you waited for her to be gone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It's - I need you to promise you won't tell her. Ever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't." Might make lying complicated if something catches fire and she needs dear old mom's help, but Emma also isn't against breaking promises.

Permalink Mark Unread

She comes in. Sits on the bed. Takes a deep breath.

"So. Something happened. Around December of last year." She pauses, bites her lip.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who do I need to kill."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - No one! It's not like that! It's - I should just show you - "

Curtain are drawn, so -

She transforms in a shimmer of light.

"I got magic," she says, weakly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's taken aback.

"Okay," she says after a moment. "Gotta be a reason you're telling me, then? Who else knows, are you in danger - is there a Masquerade that's gonna come after you - please tell me there's no Dark Lord bullshit - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wanted to invite you on the road trip. And you're a better liar than me, and it'd be hard to keep it from you. And..."

She explains. Witches. Kyubey. Magic, and dying when you run out, and its relationship with moods, and witches targeting people who know... (Not wishes, not yet.)

(She doesn't tell Emma about Kaylee or the scouting group. It's probably not hard to guess.)

Permalink Mark Unread

There's something suspicious about this. About Kyubey, and the entire situation. Something Emma suspects her sister's gotten an inkling of, from how she talks.

Emma nods, guesses Kaylee's involved, and contemplates getting her own gun. She's gone to a range enough, under the excuse it's calming, and surely her mom doesn't want her going off to college unable to defend herself.

She doesn't know if guns will work on cute little aliens.

She doesn't know they won't.

(And enemy magical girls sound like they're fully capable of being shot.)

"I'll come, and I'll cover for you. In return, you tell me where you're going, and you don't treat me like someone in need of sheltering. I'm older and smarter than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls her eyes at 'smarter' but nods, and says, quietly, "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anytime, brat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a pest," she says, but her voice is fond.

And then, soon enough, it's time for Kaylee's birthday.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's parents are as delighted as ever to see Lianne.  There's a cake!  Fancy elaborate pink-and-blue-frosted cake, store-bought but no less delicious for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's there!

With a present even, that she carefully wrapped herself in shiny blue paper with purple and silver bubbles. The ribbon's gold and curled at the ends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh!  She tears the paper off gleefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. Happy birthday!" Lianne says.

It's a framed drawing, done incredibly carefully, of Lianne and Kaylee together.

There's also, behind the frame, a set of DVDs - season one of an anime Kaylee hasn't heard of, but that looks interesting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, I love it, thank you!"  She bounces happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eee! I'm glad you like it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs the picture, and hugs Lianne, and props the picture up carefully on the dining room table.

Her parents both chipped in to get her a new more-advanced anatomy textbook to study in preparation for pre-med, and her mom also gives her a key to the family car.  Hugs all around!  Delicious cake!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs and cake! The best parts of a birthday party!

Permalink Mark Unread

They're pretty great!

"Tomorrow," Kaylee's mother says to her, "you have an appointment to take your driving test and get an intermediate license, since you said you wanted to take it as soon as possible.  So you have to do some of the driving on your road trip with Lianne."

Kaylee rolls her eyes affectionately.  "I will, Mom."

She smiles.  "Do you know when you're heading out?"

Kaylee looks at Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really have a set schedule, so whenever Kaylee feels comfortable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't need to worry about me, I had plenty of practice when I had my learner's permit.  Just gotta make it legal.  I'm honestly ready to set out whenever you want - I mean, I still need to pack and everything, but I can set whatever date.  The sooner the better, I think, I'm looking forward to it!  Did you talk to your sister about whether she wants to come along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! She's good to come. Doesn't want to do all the driving, but she'll do her share, too. Next week work? That'll give Emma time to get her stuff organized..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"  She'll wait till they're alone together to ask if Emma knows about the magical girl thing, rather than try to double-talk around it or carry out two conversations at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

She carries on conversation with Kaylee and her parents well enough, and eventually it's presumably time to retire to Kaylee's room?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep!

Kaylee finds a spot for Lianne's drawing on her desk, then sits down on the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits down too. "So - Emma took whole," she waves her hand encompassingly, "thing well. She'll cover for us at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good.  - Does she know about us, or will we have to be - stealth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't get as far as bringing that up but I think she separately suspects."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can be discreet, if you'd prefer.  Do you think she'd react badly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's your call, whether you want to tell her we're together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we should. I don't want to hide that long, that completely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alone, again, or do you want me with you?  - Or should I stop grilling you about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'm not sure, but - I think I'd rather bring it up alone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your sister, your call."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'll talk to her alone, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.  Fingers crossed for you.  - We really can talk about something less gloomy, if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't mind, yeah. Any destinations picked out yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I don't know a lot about Route 66, but I did some research - there's supposed to be a swimming pond with a cute blue whale sculpture, a place with car chassis that people traditionally come and spray-paint..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's found some hiking places! If they're going West - Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, obviously the Grand Canyon, a lot in the El Malpais area, Sandia Crest in New Mexico, Petroglyph National Monument, Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, a lot of trails in California... And she'd also like to see San Francisco while they're there, maybe visit a few city zoos?

For the eastern leg, instead of doubling back, they might want to loop up and through the Pacific northwest if they have the time, then come back around via Chicago...? They should have around three and a half months if they're willing to spend most of summer, but side trips and hiking can eat up a lot of time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, that's a lot of ideas - Sounds fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I'm really excited, heh."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww.  She loves being able to cheer Lianne up.  "Me too, it's gonna be great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me either!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The conversation turns to more in-depth planning after that - half of which is wild speculation - and then Lianne does, eventually, have to go home.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steels her nerves the next day, and approaches her sister while their mom's at work.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Squirt," Emma says. "What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flops back on the bed. "So. Uh. Something to talk to you about. Nothing major - well, important - it is really important to me but, uh, like, normal teenager important, not 'magic and monsters' important, uhhhh."

Permalink Mark Unread

Emma smiles a bit. "You're being a dork. Spit it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're an ass," Lianne groans. "It's just. I'm. Uh. Dating. Someone."

"...That someone is Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Congrats, never thought your ugly mug would land a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Lianne throws a pillow at her sister. Then another one.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and returns fire.

After the pillow fight turns into a wrestling match - which Emma obviously wins - she flops on the bed next to her sister. "But, no, seriously, she seems decent. Mom'd flip, but fuck mom. I'm fully capable of giving your dates the shovel talk myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shoves Emma. "Don't. Kaylee's sweet. I can handle myself, anyways, I'm almost seventeen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Such life experience. I bow to your great wisdom, oh elder."

Permalink Mark Unread

Which would be Lianne's cue to try and smother her sister with a pillow.

(Doesn't work.)

Permalink Mark Unread

In a few days, Kaylee has her license, and has two months of outfits packed.  She says goodbye to her parents, tells them she loves them and that she'll miss them and that she'll stay in touch.  She's quietly thankful that, even when she's keeping so many secrets from them, she's still able to mean it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne packs food and money and fewer outfits, figuring they'll be able to do laundry in motels, says goodbye to mom (does not particularly promise to stay in touch), and her sister drives her to pick Kaylee up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Lianne!  Everyone all set?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are! You ready to head out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hauls her suitcase into the back of the car.  "Yep!"  And in she climbs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Buckle in, we've got a bit of a long drive to set us off. Lianne said you guys don't want to stop in Memphis?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, we don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do I get the feeling something happened on you guys' trip there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at Lianne, deferring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some girls are jerks, and really territorial."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that likely to be a problem this trip?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know exactly how much Lianne filled you in on - we are going to be trying to make contacts with other magical girls on this trip, it's kind of the secret reason we're doing this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She didn't mention that exactly. Any foreseeable problems with that plan on you guys' end?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - conceivable - that some of them might try to start fights."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. There's three of us. I suppose we'll just have to be good at ending fights."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um.  I can imagine how this is probably going to sound coming from a girl not two weeks into having her driver's license, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm assuming magical girls aren't bullet-proof, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wouldn't be harmless, getting shot," she says.  "But we can bounce back from a lot.  And you're supposed to be able to turn off your pain receptors, if you're a magical girl, although I've never actually tried it - so someone might be able to keep going after you shoot them.  I know ordinary bullets aren't supposed to be able to do a lot against witches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ordinary? Implies they can be extraordinary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I might be able to modify your ammunition but I'm not sure I want you shooting people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even if it's between them and me? Them and Kaylee?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess if I got into it, knowing the risks, I can't very well tell you not to.  Although I think, if it were possible to make an ordinary gun as deadly to another magical girl as it is to a human, more of them would probably rely on guns than their own conjured weapons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'd have to ask Mal if there's a trade-off I guess. Like, speed, or cost..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "But it's better than nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be something to experiment with, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  Tennessee speeds by.

Permalink Mark Unread

Emma has no particular problem letting the conversation lapse until it's time to start considering where to stop for a break.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Oh hey, did you guys pick out any road music?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Even managed to find a few things me and Emma can sorta agree on, though if you don't like anything feel free to say..."

And she'll put on a CD.

Permalink Mark Unread

Music is half the fun of road trips, in Kaylee’s opinion.  Do Lianne and her sister have a motel picked out for the night?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really. Emma's plan is too drive until they're tired then pick somewhere. She wasn't sure what the other two's endurance would be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee'll probably want to find someplace to crash around dinnertime - today and most other days of the trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's got zero problem with that - and doesn't super want to be driving when it gets close to dark, anyways. Even in stopover towns, it's nice to have time to sit down and eat and maybe walk around some.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely!

She tries not to be too sappy in front of Lianne's sister, but every now and then they have a few minutes alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is delightful! There's something amazing about getting to spend so much time together, and seeing new places, and the way the landscape rolls by them...

Permalink Mark Unread

(And kissing in hotel rooms...)

Permalink Mark Unread

There are definitely times Emma isn't there available for that!

(And Emma's even pretty good about texting when she expects to be back.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Summer break: excellent.  Road trips with Lianne: really excellent.

Eventually, though, it's time to stop in a bigger city and start looking for magical girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Santa Rosa has a single magical girl, who isn't exactly aggressive but takes their contact information then tells them to fuck off. (She doesn't mind them hunting in the outskirts; the witch population's enough for an established magical girl and the occasional nomad, and she is aware she's on a tourist path).

Albuquerque, New Mexico is the first big city, the entire metropolitan area and nearby cities large enough for ten territorial girls easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So.  Hunting in other girls' territory seem to go badly... any ideas?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not. Really? There might be - maybe we can sense other magical girls? Like we sense witches? I sometimes get a - feeling? Like when Taylor's being reckless."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I still want to figure out some way to... attract attention over a large area, and then let them come to us.  But I'm not sure we can do that, just the two of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially in a way that just alerts magical girls and not also the local police."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "We'll try dowsing for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably the best place to start, yeah. Is now good, or do you want to wait for night? - I guess we could also practice sensing each other?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that's a good idea.  We've got some time, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Hopefully enough to refine this at least some. And since Emma knows about the whole," she waves her hand vaguely, "thing, we can stick around longer if we need to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to play Magical Girl Hide and Seek, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's pretty good at hiding physically - but she's fairly obvious, magically, once Kaylee figures out how to look. She's not good at hiding her magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's about the same!  It's a bit tricky to pick up the knack of sensing magical girls instead of witches, but once they figure it out it's not too hard to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. Guess it's time to start looking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sweeping out in a loose spiral from their motel seems the most reasonable path. Lianne stays alert, and out of her raiment for now - it might be a long night, and they don't need to risk attracting attention or using too much magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

It probably will be a long night.

But after a while, they'll pick up traces of somebody.  Some distance away.  Unless whoever-it-is also learned this trick and happens to be employing it right now, she probably doesn't know they're there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ready to head out?" she asks Kaylee, trying to pinpoint the girl's location. "Any ideas on how we should approach her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm trying to imagine, if I were paranoid and maybe a little sketchy, like the girl we met in Tennessee with the grappling hook... maybe in-raiment so it's obvious we're magical girls, but - as conspicuously unarmed as we can be?  ...What if we just offered a spare grief seed, first thing, no strings attached, as a show of good faith?  Do you have spares, I think I do..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems show of good faith but - I'm bad at modeling paranoid people, but... It might be almost too show of good faith? Because it's such a coveted resource. It's - like someone offering you a million dollars as a show of good faith? Maybe if you're a nation, but an individual high school girl..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense.  We could offer to clear their soul gem... but then that's kinda, come hang out in stabbing range - come present your soul gem for easy access while hanging out in stabbing range..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I think just - talking? I'm not sure there's any - gestures of good faith that're the right size?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, probably.  Let's transform?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's." Her raiment forms around her, shimmering. She doesn't summon her weapon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee follows suit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Following the trail, it's not long before they come upon the magical girl.  And girl is accurate - she looks barely older than twelve, dressed in a bubblegum-pink costume even more Magical Girl Classic than Kaylee's, and wielding an enormous hammer that looks straight out of hammerspace.  Her back is to them, and she doesn't seem to have noticed them.

There's a Kyubey on her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

She knows that there's more than one, by now, so that's not too surprising, though it's still a bit jarring - she's never actually met one of the others' Kyubeys. (Twelve year olds: should not be fighting.)

She'll clear her throat, say a soft, "Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns - looks scared, takes a step back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey - you're okay, we're not here to fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't move, but doesn't relax either, her eyes flicking between Lianne and her Kyubey.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not after your territory - we're with a group trying to improve coordination between magical girls. Give each other excuses to be out late, information on witches too dangerous for one girl, heads ups about aggressive nomads, share tips for doing magic, share strategies we've noticed work well..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her Kyubey hops off down off of her shoulder and plants himself on the ground in between her and Lianne.  'She wants you to go.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and sets a grief seed down on the ground.

"We will, but - if you want to seek us out later, we're the League of Magical Girls, down in Jackson, Tennessee."

She steps back, half turning.

Permalink Mark Unread

The kid looks like she's gonna be pretty much rooted to the spot until they leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne takes off, heading away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee follows.

"I think her Kyubey must have been talking to her," she murmurs, as much to her self as to Lianne.  "The way she kept - looking at him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so too, yeah..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't... feel great... about just leaving her.  But I don't know what else we can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It's - a bad situation..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's... quiet, on the way back to the hotel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne is, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's early morning by the time they get back to the hotel room.  Kaylee falls asleep pretty quick.

Kaylee's not up for much sightseeing the next day.

Then, that evening: round two, off in another neighborhood.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's not up for much, either.

She's quiet, still, when they're going searching.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you feel that?" Kaylee asks, into the silence.

There's more than one magic-signature, moving, within their range; three, all in different directions.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Wonder what's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns, slowly, on the spot.  Frowns.  "I think they're coming toward us."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Yeah, I think so too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her knees are bent, halfway to a combat stance; her face is - distant.  Listening, sensing.

"I - don't like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me neither."

She takes a deep breath and drops into her raiment. "Come on, let's go - "

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods, follows suit.

But as they try to rush out from between their three mystery pursuers, the two they move to slip between change direction, and the one behind them speeds up.

(There's a knife in each of her hands, already, but she's still running.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne is extremely fast when she wants to be - can afford to burn some magic on flying - Kaylee probably can't, and isn't as fast -

Still, she puts on as much speed as she can without leaving Kaylee behind.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Can you call your sister, I bet we could get away in a car - ”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, hold on - "

She's not running at her top speed anyways, so it's easy enough to coordinate calling her sister with their route.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's slowing them down, she can tell.  Lianne can move faster than this.  Lianne can move faster than them - but Kaylee can't.  (She should be telling Lianne not to worry about her, she's putting Lianne in danger for her again and now she's putting Lianne's sister in danger too, this was what her wish was supposed to solve - )

(She doesn't say anything - )

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a shot -

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee yelps and spins as a musket ball grazes her arm -

Permalink Mark Unread

One of their pursuers is visible, clad in wintergreen, white smoke billowing from the barrel of her musket, and two other girls gaining fast on foot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey what gives!" Lianne shouts, putting herself between Kaylee and the other girl, sword manifesting in her hand. "We're not trying to screw with your territory!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wintergreen doesn’t respond - she’s cursing at herself for missing the shot, and spirals and beams of seafoam light are gathering slowly at one end of her barrel, charging up to fire again.

The other two close in.  One girl in forest green conjures a zweihander almost as large as Lianne’s own sword, though a distinctly different style, narrower blade and longer crosspiece.  The other, pale lavender, already has a buckler on each wrist.  She goes for Kaylee.

They are not, it seems, interested in talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne bets she's got more of a margin than them, more grief seeds stored away, more space to risk running low -

She throws her sword at wintergreen, not hard enough it'll be trouble to dodge but enough it'll be disruptive, already pulling out more - a sword emerges in a shower of golden light between her and green, mostly as a barrier, and golden ribbons lance at lavender's back.

She's aiming to subdue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lavender is deft and manages to dodge most of the ribbons, but one snags her wrist, and she pulls against it - with the ribbon anchored in midair, the force pulls at Lianne's focus and her magic.  Wintergreen hops to one side and swears again under her breath; the light she was building up dissipates a little, but not all the way.  Forest-green zweihander doesn't have so much momentum that she can't pivot to circling around the sword - to Lianne's left, opposite Lavender - but it buys Lianne a second or two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee still has a throwing knife in each hand; she pitches them both toward wintergreen, keep her on her toes, and uses lavender's momentary distraction to start heading in wintergreen's direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's fought the entire League before (sparring, but... Good practice for doing this non-lethally). She has enough concentration to start wrapping far more ribbons around lavender, anchoring them to a shield-lattice of swords.

Her sword's in her hand by the time forest-green gets close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wintergreen leaps and alights on the ground next to lavender, manifests a sharp bayonet on her musket.  She gives the force field around lavender a hearty stab, expecting to shatter it.  Forest-green moves to distract Lianne by pressing the attack, bellowing and rushing forward and spinning her entire body in a heavy slash.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her force field holds, light flaring - it takes a bit of Lianne's concentration, but in the way not falling over after a blow does, muscle memory translating her intent automatically -

Muscle memory also brings her sword up to block forest-green's attack - don't rely on your muscles, anchor it in place like it's a barrier, make it a barrier as automatically as you'd leap over an obstacle, takes magic but Lianne has that to burn right now -

Forest-green will likely be off balance by facing a shield held in place magically - Lianne abandons her sword just as forest-green's blow strikes, trusting her balance in the magic to keep that new barrier in place, and drops low and to the side, ribbons lashing from her hand at forest-green.

Permalink Mark Unread

Forest-green drops her sword as it clashes with Lianne’s.  She is off balance, but she manages to turn her stagger into a hasty but effective dodge.  She grins as she conjures a replacement sword, an I-could-do-this-all-day grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee flings another knife in wintergreen's direction as she approaches her, and wintergreen jumps up and backward to dodge - and Kaylee's been practicing too, she can conjure and throw daggers almost continuously for a few seconds, and wintergreen doesn't have time to do anything but dodge, and twirl her musket like a staff to deflect incoming knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon Kaylee's closer to lavender than wintergreen is - but Kaylee has to take a second to recover, and in that second wintergreen charges up a shot - snaps her musket upward across her chest like a color guard display, so the light flows into and down its barrel - then takes aim and fires a shining musket ball at Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wintergreen's shots are faster than Kaylee's knives, but this one's not charged up all the way - Kaylee manages to twist away so it's only a grazing shot, and between her half-dodge and the half-charge of the shot she's not badly hurt.

Permalink Mark Unread

But the burst of white smoke is even more voluminous than a real musket, and it's enough to give wintergreen cover as she dodges away -

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee loses track of her for a second, and by the time she catches sight of wintergreen again wintergreen is charging her, jaw set, bayonet manifested and coruscating with seafoam light, from an unexpected angle -

Permalink Mark Unread

Now it's Kaylee on the retreat, and at the angle wintergreen's chasing her she's heading straight for the wall of a shop.

Permalink Mark Unread

But she's got some new tricks too.

She conjures two knives in one hand, manages to pitch them one to each side of wintergreen in a single throw, and a long robin's-egg-blue ribon billows out between them.  With the daggers to weight it it should wrap around the other girl when it hits.

(And too fast for her to think about it she realizes wintergreen's going to jump - )

And without pausing to think, her body moving almost faster than her mind, she does the same trick again, this time aimed above wintergreen, just where she thinks she's going to jump to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wintergreen's face shows panic -

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

 - and her bayonet changes shape from a spearhead to something like a scimitar, and she slashes the ribbon in half.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Kaylee had planned to jump onto the roof of the building she was heading toward but the opening's too good, some instinct in her says to press the advantage -

Permalink Mark Unread

She rushes wintergreen again, and she starts rapid-fire pitching daggers again, and this time she pushes herself and -

Permalink Mark Unread

 - and the daggers keep coming, there's nothing she can do but dodge and weave and deflect -

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee can feel the dip in her magic but she's got her on the run, she's got her now -

Permalink Mark Unread

 - and so she does.

Kaylee's knife sinks into the other magical girl's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee -

Permalink Mark Unread

- freezes.

Permalink Mark Unread

(And the whole fight plays back in her mind.  What had she been doing, what had she been trying to do - the other girl had been - scared - and she'd - )

Permalink Mark Unread

The other girl sees it, when Kaylee freezes.  She doesn't understand why, but -

- but she puts all the strength and speed and lightness she'd put into dodging, and into jumping from building to building, all of it, into one push toward Kaylee, and with one arm she swings her bayonet to strike -

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's between them - her sword's more a shield than anything, and it's meant to keep people safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

She skids to a stop on her heels as her bayonet clashes with Lianne's sword - she grimaces and mutters under her breath, something "fucking kidding me" -

Permalink Mark Unread

(Forest green takes advantages of Lianne's distraction to run towards where lavender's imprisoned.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And Emma's car screeches up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kaylee, let's go!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods, turns and runs for the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

She guards their retreat, making sure no one attacks them as Kaylee gets in, climbing in herself last.

Permalink Mark Unread

Forest-green is working on bringing down Lianne's force field, which presumably becomes easier as she and Kaylee retreat.  Wintergreen watches them go, her eyes raking over the car, but not bothering to try to give chase.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's - quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Emma gets them out of there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne focuses on keeping up the force field until they get some distance.

Permalink Mark Unread

With no other demands on her attention it's not hard, even as the range increases.  Soon enough, though, they're out of sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't need line of sight, and keeps it for a little while after, then lets it dismiss.

Then: "You alright, Kaylee?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

She doesn't meet Lianne's eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - C'mon, let's clear our soul gems."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - yeah," she says.  She sounds a little hoarse.  Her tiara dissolves into blue light, shimmers through the air into her hand, in its bauble-form.  "Do you have...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

She hands Kaylee a grief seed, turning her own gem into a bauble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tap.

She shivers, a bit, and takes a deep breath.  (There's still a churning in her stomach at the thought of - the way the other girl looked at her, the way she was pretty sure she, Kaylee, was looking back at her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Tap.

"We might want to skip town."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Yeah.  I - "

(Does she know, she thinks, could Lianne tell what I was - )

(how I was - )

(does she know it's my fault we'll have to skip town, if the magical girls in this city are coordinated somehow, if they tell each other about me - if that's the reputation I've given to the League, in their minds - is she mad - )

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it safe to get our things from the hotel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - "

She takes another deep breath, tries to think.

"I don't think they'll be able to keep up with us if we're traveling by car," she says.  "Magical girls can track other magical girls, but - if we don't dawdle - I think we can get to the hotel, grab our stuff, and get out of town before they can catch up with us.  We don't have to double back to get there or anything, I don't think - it's mostly a straight shot from here to the hotel, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I think we'll be okay.  Lianne?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so too, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

They're correct: the trip back to the hotel to gather their things and check out, and the drive out of the city, goes uninterrupted.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's Kaylee's turn to drive, which is good; she's still not feeling very talkative.  She focuses on the road.

That night they check into a motel on the road, in a roadside town small enough to probably not have any magical girls at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

That night, Kaylee -

 - can't sleep.

She's thinking about her wish.  She didn't just say, "I wish to be braver," "I wish to be brave enough to save Lianne if she needs me to," which - if she was going to mess around with her own head at all, would've been the smart way to do it.  She said...

She can't even remember what she said, which seems unspeakably, humiliatingly stupid when she admits it to herself.  Something so important, something that changed the way she thought and acted, and she didn't even - memorize it, or write it down, or anything.  But she remembers distinctly saying she wanted to be the sort of person who would make a good magical girl.  That was something she talked about with Kyubey.  She wanted to be someone who could stand to fight witches, without being scared, without being worn down by fear.

She hadn't said, I don't want it to turn me evil.  It hadn't occurred to her that it might.

But apparently, if she isn't afraid of fighting witches, of fighting other magical girls, she - she likes it.

*

She can't sleep, at all, so she doesn't.  She climbs tentatively out of bed and takes a pen and notepad into the bathroom and writes,

Out for a walk.

-K

and leaves the notepad on the end table, and walks out.  Of her room, of the hotel.  Around the block.

She - still can't bear to tell Lianne that she would've been to cowardly to run into a witch's labyrinth to rescue her, the way Lianne ran in after Kaylee.  She can't imagine Lianne being angry at her for it, but - she can barely imagine it at all.  Someone saying to someone else, someone they love, "no, I wouldn't have been brave enough to try to save you.  I know you did it for me, but I would've been too afraid."  She can't picture it, and so she can't picture what might be said in reply, and - she grimaces, clenches her fists, at the thought - apparently she's still not brave enough to find out.

Which means she can't tell Lianne her wish, which means she can't talk to Lianne about whether it was a bad idea, or what to do about it.

But she can't keep not talking about it.

*

And Mal, she remembers, also made a wish that changed the way her mind works, and also talked about regretting it.

It's not the same situation, really, but - it's not as scary, somehow, as admitting something like that to someone's face.

She gets out her phone, and, slowly, she types:

Are you awake?  No emergency, but I think I need to talk.

And she hits send.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. I'm pulling an all nighter right now, but can take a break. What's up?

Permalink Mark Unread

I'm starting to think my wish was a really bad idea.

I don't remember exactly the wording I used but broadly it was supposed to make me braver and more able to handle fighting witches.  But it kind of made it *fun* to fight witches, and also to fight other magical girls.  Today me and Lianne were in a fight with three of the magical girls who live in Albuquerque, and she was focused on subduing them nonlethally, but by the end of the fight I was just sort of fighting her the way I'd fight a witch or a familiar.  And I hit her with a throwing dagger, and I don't know how badly she was hurt but if it was an ordinary person it would've been really bad, like she would have had to go to the emergency room.  And I realized I hadn't been thinking about hurting her at all, I was just fighting her, and it was

She has to stop, and grimace, and grit her teeth, before she can bring herself to type out the next words.

fun and exciting and exhilarating and I didn't care about hurting her until I did.  And I don't think that's what fighting someone would've felt like if I never made my wish.  So I don't know exactly what my wish did to my brain, how it changed me, what sort of person it changed me into, and I don't know if I like or trust the person it changed me into, and if it did change me into a bad person I don't know what to do about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morality is - complicated. Especially 'bad' or 'good.' If you want my view - there aren't good or bad people, only actions that cause more good in the world and actions that cause more harm. I think as long as your life balances towards 'reducing harm' you're alright morally, but... I'm aware my view isn't the only one.

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns this over in her head. It's better than the worst she'd been fearing, certainly, and now that she's read Mal's actual response it's hard to even imagine what she'd been afraid Mal would say.  But...

Well, part of my problem is - even if I accept that I just need to do more good than harm in order to be a good person, which I'm not sure I agree with - I don't know if I *will*.  I don't know if my actions caused more harm than good when I was fighting the other magical girl today, but I know I caused more harm than I *needed* to.  I wasn't thinking about whether I was doing more harm than good.  I think I did the things I did because I liked seeing the other girl scared, and if that's something that can make me hurt people then I don't think I'm a person who

She mulls over her next words for a moment, as she worries at her lip and stares into the bright blue-white glow of her screen.

is in fact going to go through life helping people more than she hurts them.  And I don't think I've ever done something before because I *wanted to hurt someone*, maybe except when I was really little, and I didn't realize I was going to until I did.  And I don't know if I can just say, "okay, I'm not going to do that again," because if you'd asked me before I did it I would've said I wasn't going to then too.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is a reasonable worry. The ways that wishes can change our minds - put them out of our control - can be terrifying. For solving it - you'll likely be under its sway less when your soul gem is full. Also, there's ways you can gain greater self knowledge and control. It's hard, long work though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She - reads this, and thinks, and breathes.  Her heart's racing less.

She's not too optimistic about being less swayed by it when her soul gem's fuller.  The way it changed her mind was her wish, not a side effect; it was what she thought she wanted.  But it's a smart thing to keep an eye on.  And work - work she can put in.

I'm willing to put in work.  I think I have to.  ...Looking back I think there was a moment that I could've - held back, or not gotten so lost in what I was doing.

...but the opening's too good, some instinct in her tells her to press the advantage...

But I'm a little worried about keeping an eye open for things like that in the middle of a fight.  Everything moves so fast and it's dangerous to get distracted.  Is there anything else for it other than that sort of thing?

Permalink Mark Unread

Other than getting another potential to make a wish that cancels out yours - which is very hard - I don't think so, no.

Permalink Mark Unread

I don't want to pin my hopes on something like that, if I can fix myself some other way.  I'm not sure it would be a very good use of a wish.  I can try to keep one eye on myself.  We've practiced a lot of nonlethal fighting, I know how to do it, I just need to... do it.

...How much does it hurt a magical girl to get a knife stuck in her shoulder?  I think one of the reasons I was in my head so much about it was because I was imagining an ordinary human getting injured that way, which would've been *really bad* I'm pretty sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

It depends on how much she's focusing on her body. It's incredibly dangerous to do so, but magical girls can ignore their wounds entirely, and most will reflexively dull pain.

Permalink Mark Unread

But it wouldn't be a medical emergency or anything, the way it'd be for a regular person?  Just something to regenerate from like any other injury.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just something to regenerate from, yes.

Okay.  That makes me feel better.  I could've probably held her off nonlethally and I'll try to in the future, but it's good to be sure I didn't hurt her as badly as I was imagining.

Thanks a lot for talking to me about this.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're welcome. And I can help with mental exercises to develop better self awareness for the future.

Permalink Mark Unread

I would like that.  Thank you.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sends over detailed descriptions of exercises, as well as a note she can get Kaylee some books that're more in depth next time they see each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks!  I should probably head to bed now, though, I'm pretty tired now that I'm not so panicky.  Good night!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good night!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee’s in a better mood, next morning, as they pack up and check out; but she’s still a bit distant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everything okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Didn't sleep well last night."  She's still not sure she's ready to talk to Lianne about it.  Certainly she'd like to wait till they're alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll help fill Emma in on what exactly happened, last night, if Emma has any questions.  But:

"I think I need a day off from magical girl stuff," she says.  "Lianne, are we near any of the good sightseeing spots?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so! We'll have to check..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll poke her head into an atlas with Lianne.  " - oh, it looks like we're right near Petrified Forest National Park - you mentioned wanting to go there, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! It sounded neat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long do you wanna spend there, do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wellllll it depends a little!  On how pretty it turns out to be.  But a few hours, at least, I bet!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds good to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not a long drive from the motel to the Park - less than an hour.

“You’re dropping us off, right, Emma?  See you later.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'll do some shopping."

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves as Emma drives off, then offers her hand to Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hand!

She grins at Kaylee. "How about we just wander?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds nice," she says softly.

The nearest trail leads them along a winding path that descends gently through the rolling russet Painted Desert hills.

Permalink Mark Unread

She really enjoys looking around - and at Kaylee - and taking pictures.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww.

She will peer at Lianne's phone to look at the pictures she takes.  They're pretty.  "You're a good photographer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeeee. "Thanks!" She takes a picture of Kaylee. "It helps having lovely models..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and ducks her head, and then, impulsively, strikes a pose.

Permalink Mark Unread

More pictures!

Permalink Mark Unread

This is fun, she's never tried to look sultry before...

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course then she breaks into a big doofy grin at the look on Lianne's face and it ruins the effect a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "You're cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't help it!" she says brightly.  "So are you, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

She poses too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee retrieves her phone, spends a moment trying to frame Lianne nicely against the hills in the background, takes a picture.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, though she holds her position until Kaylee can get a few shots. "How do I look?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty!"  And she shows her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're good with the camera!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, thanks," she says.  "Can I see your pictures?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." She shows them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee, is that what she looks like when she smirks?  She kinda likes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

 - is that what she looked like when she stabbed the other girl in the shoulder.

Something curdles in her stomach.  She - doesn't like this picture so much, suddenly.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  I - "

She hands Lianne back her phone, looks away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She should just tell her.

I would've been too afraid to save you, so I wished to be braver, but...

Somehow she'd imagined that it all had become easy, now that she'd told Mal about it, now that Mal had still been willing to help her instead of shunning her for what she'd turned herself into.  But it still looms just as great and terrifying and shameful in her mind.

She can't say it.  But maybe she can say some of it -

"I'm not sure... I like who I am when I fight other magical girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - "

" - when I was fighting the other girl, with the musket - "

This was so much easier when she could take five minutes to compose an essay about it.

" - it was fun.  I liked - making her have to run.  It felt like a game.  I could've stopped her without - stabbing her in the shoulder, I think I could've just wrapped her up in ribbons, but instead - "

Her fists clench.

"I liked - seeing her scared."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

She's - still, for a moment.  Shocked.  Not frozen or paralyzed, exactly, it's not that she doesn't want to be hugged, but -

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, now she's crying, a little.  And hugging her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

So! Many! Hugs! She has no idea how to handle this so she will Just Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is just going to cry into Lianne's shoulder for a little while.

Her breath hitches, and she sobs, and she - kind of also laughs.

"I thought - you'd - "

She doesn't seem up to finishing that sentence right this second but she seems to be smiling, through her tears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tight hug! "I - you're good, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little, weakly, into Lianne's shoulder.

"I didn't used to - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - "

She dehugs, mops at her eyes a little.  Takes a deep, kind of shuddering breath.

"Kyubey talked me into - making this stupid wish - that I'd be braver, and better at fighting witches, and - it feels like it's making me like fighting more - other magical girls, too, not just witches - I don't know what kind of person I am anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh No.

"That's - "

"That's Kyubey's fault, not yours, and - "

"That must suck so much, I'm sorry I - didn't notice anything wrong - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"No you don't have to apologize - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - should notice when you're upset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was trying to hide it from you.  I was - "

" - the only reason I made that wish is because - when you saved me from that witch - the first witch - "

" - I didn't think - I don't think I'd've been brave enough to go in after you.  The way you did, I mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That's okay. It's - most people aren't stupidly brave like me. Most people don't need to be, and..."

"I'm okay, being - the braver one."

Permalink Mark Unread

...hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know it's not my fault Kyubey fooled me, really," she says, "but - I still - I'm scared of myself, now.  Even if there's a sense in which I'm the victim, or a victim, I'm still somebody who might hurt people, now, and I don't want to, but - "

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I won't let you hurt people, not - when it isn't absolutely necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shudders.

"I think - if I need you to stop me - maybe I should just - not try to fight, just run if someone attacks us.  I don't want to be - someone you have to protect, and someone you have to - rein in - "

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. "I - maybe you can learn to control it? But... I wouldn't object to staying out of fights, more."

Permalink Mark Unread

She breathes.

"I think I can.  Eventually.  - I talked to Mal about it some, last night, and she gave me some advice.  Just - "

"I guess I keep imagining - that I can have a big tough conversation about this with someone, and it'll be awful and I'll cry, but then it'll be over.  And intellectually I know that's silly but - some part of me keeps expecting it.  And then you said, okay I'll keep an eye on you to make sure you don't hurt anyone, and - "

" - I've been halfway in denial about it this whole time, or - compartmentalizing it away - and that made it really real, like, okay, this is something that's gonna be true about me for the rest of my life.  And I started freaking out all over again, a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'm sorry."

"It's - maybe there's a way to change it. Like... An addiction, or a bad habit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, no, it's okay - I think it's - sort of something that had to happen to me."

"I think there's probably things I can do.  Mal gave me some advice, some recommendations, like I said.  Just - it's going to be - a process."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll help. However I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Lianne."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "It's no problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her face turns somber again.  "I think - not fighting other magical girls, for a bit, might be a good idea.  At least until I have a better idea of - things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for - not running away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - no problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Jeez, I'm a mess - " she wipes at her eyes, cheeks still damp with shed tears.  "Do you have a tissue?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh... Yeah, here - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."  She cleans herself up a bit.

"I think... I'd like to just walk.  Some more.  For a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works for me." Holding hands?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes Absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeeee.

She's content to walk around holding hands and taking pictures and looking at cool things for a while, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is!

Eventually, however, they have to leave.

Still, Lianne's had fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

So has Kaylee!  She's almost back to normal by the time Emma rolls around to pick them up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trip go well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yeah,” she says, a little distantly.  Let’s not talk about her mental breakdown with Lianne’s sister who Kaylee has Mixed Feelings about.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool." And she takes them back to their hotel room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's quiet, on the way back.  She keeps holding Lianne's hand as long as Lianne lets her.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's pretty much 'until she needs it for something else', so...

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne is Very Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is Very Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's very lucky, too.

She leans her head on Lianne's shoulder and - well, doesn't actually go to sleep, not in the car, but.  It's been a long couple days.

Permalink Mark Unread

It has.

They're back at the motel soon enough, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She yawns and stretches, even though she wasn't quite asleep, and climbs out of the car alongside Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I need to talk to you guys about something," she says as they head into the motel, "Though it might wait until you've slept."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm okay to talk now..."  She looks at Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod. "Yeah, I am too."

Permalink Mark Unread

“All right,” she says, and turns back to Emma.

(She’s - gonna keep one eye on Lianne, though, and take her cues from her.  Probably it will be super obvious that she’s doing so, but... but.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"First: I bought a gun."

Permalink Mark Unread

She - nods, slowly.  "And you - want us to - enchant it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. If you know how..." She sets it on the coffee table.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - don't, really," Kaylee says.  She looks from the gun to Lianne.  "We could talk to Mal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, she's more likely to know something..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a show of fumbling for her phone while she pings Lianne: 'You up for - giving her a magic gun?  I feel like I don't... know what to think of her.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Uh. I don't think she'll randomly murder people but I also don't think she'd hesitate to shoot someone threatening me or her. But I don't know magical girls are more vulnerable to enchanted guns than normal guns? Enchanting may only help against witches, and I don't think she'd - jump into a fight she didn't need to be in?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'All right.  I trust you.'

She texts Mal:

Hi, it's Kaylee again.  Things are going pretty well.  I mentioned Lianne and I are on a road trip with her sister Emma?  We've decided it's a good idea to give her an enchanted gun for self-defense against witches, but neither of us know how to enchant existing weapons.  Is that something it's possible/safe to explain over the phone?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hi Kaylee. I'm not sure, I've never tried explaining it not in person... There's a slight trick to it, which is easier to feel, but most magical girls can figure it out on their own, even without guidance.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not something that can go badly wrong or be dangerous if you mess it up, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not in my experience, though I'd be careful about where you aim the finished product.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.  Thanks, Mal.

As long as we're talking - I think I'd like to check in with you from time to time, while I'm travelling.  I think one of the reasons I got as bad as I did about my wish is because I felt like I didn't have anyone to talk to about it, and I want to try to... be close to more people, about this stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

That might be a good idea, yeah. It always helps, having someone to talk to. A support network.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right, exactly

Thanks for talking.  Should get back to the group now.  Talk to you later?

To Lianne, and Emma: "Mal says it's safe to just - try to figure out how to do it by feel."  She turns to address Lianne more specifically.  "Do you want to do it, or me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

You're welcome. Talk to you later.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne, meanwhile, shrugs. "I don't really have - a preference..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think - I'll try, then."

She... picks it up, carefully.  It feels - strange - in her hands.  Which doesn't make very much sense, she conjures her own deadly weapons all the time...

Permalink Mark Unread

She frowns at it.  She's at a bit of a loss, at least at first, but...

But...

...but, she realizes, when she does conjure her own knives, there's a kind of - weapon-ness, that she's - making, or pulling from, that she uses to make them, that wants to make itself into a knife.  And she thinks she can put that weapon-ness into...

Permalink Mark Unread

Light shimmers over the gun, like the light that makes itself into daggers for her, and it goes from harsh dark grey to silver accented with a pretty blue, ornate little filigree designs where the mundane object had harsh edges, a little crest framing the end of the barrel.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good job!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.  "Thanks."

It's - lighter, somehow, and feels more intuitive to use, though still not nearly as much as her knives.

She sets it down, slides it back across the table toward Emma.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it.

"Strange."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It should work on witches and familiars now, if you run into one."

'Didn't think to ask Mal how they work against magical girls, but we're gonna be talking more, I can bring it up sometime?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Thanks. Will it fire any differently?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that sounds good...'

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - don't think so?  I'm not sure actually.  We could - drive out somewhere deserted for you to try it out..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd prefer that before any live fire situations come up..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I think that's a good idea too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But fortunately there's a lot of empty desert around here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and glances at Lianne.  "I think - we could go out sometime in the next couple days?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, too. "That works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."
