Temple in Cardverse
Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is reading a book. He is liking the style so far, very witty, it's fantasy, but the author likes to make humorous comments on the scientific implications of the various magical feats described in the story. Some are absolutely hilarious, all are very interesting.

Hmm. Like this one. Which describes a simple magical experiment to be performed in a closed room. The book urges the reader to try and perform it on the grounds of "when will you have a better excuse to try doing magic?" and that sells it to Temple.

Temple closes the window and door, makes sure there is no breeze or air current to disturb the open book.

"Wind, come forth, flow and fly as my will commands it!" Temple says and he means it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...well that's some wind alright.

Permalink Mark Unread

...that was very surprising.

Permalink Mark Unread

And surprises are very interesting.

Temple tries it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

It works again!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ok. He will try it once more this way. Then... Temple thinks, he will try in the hallway closet. Then he will try in the bathroom. Does it still work?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yyyup.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is nearly bursting with delight. MAGIC! Actual magic!

Well, the sink gives him an idea. He fills a water bowl and places it in the shower.

"Water, come forth, flow and wave as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

...it stirs a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple tries again with less water.

Permalink Mark Unread

It stirs about exactly as much!

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple shrugs. New experiment idea:

"Water!" Is all he says, and the he wills it to move.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmaybe it vibrates a tad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. Maybe it needs instructions or something. Also, maybe Temple should try something that isn't moving

"Water, by my will I command you to... chill," Temple decides to rhyme at the last moment, magic always rhymes in stories and he did take the idea from a book.

Permalink Mark Unread

It definitely becomes a bit colder, if he touches it. Not, like, freezing, but maybe a few degrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

So it can do other things. Temple should test this very empirically, maybe make charts and think of a dozen variations for a test.

But it would be more fun to just try new things.

"Water, I command you to glow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

...nah.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's okay random bowl of water, you are allowed not to glow, Temple just discovered magic! Temple will try see if he can move the water without calling it specifically.

"By my will I command you to flow and wave!" Temple says in the hammiest way possible.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, now he will try something more scientific. He thinks of a few experiments.

"Wind," he says while pointing at water, "by my will I command you to flow and wave!"

"H2O, by my will I command you to flow and wave!"

"Liquid, by my will I command you to flow and wave!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The first generates a soft breeze, the second makes the water stir a bit, the third does nothing at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

And what happens if he keeps repeating the magical words over and over, can he get the water move where he wants? If he says "Wind and Water" can he command two elements at once? If he keeps asking water to chill does it progressively get colder and eventually freezes? Does it freeze if he asks it to freeze? What if he calls upon earth (using dirt from a vase)? Can he ignite a piece of paper in the fireplace? He gets a coin and tries to move it using the command "Metal, my will commands you to move!" then he replaces the world "metal" with others (earth, mineral, copper), what results does he get? Can he move something made of plastic by calling upon plastic?

Permalink Mark Unread

Repeating the magical words helps not at all if they're all part of the same "unit of intent," and merely repeating the "spell" many times makes the same effect happen many times. Saying "Wind and Water" does let him move both elements at once, and a little bit better than each separately. Asking the water to chill repeatedly does eventually get it close to freezing—

—and then it blows up into steam (fortunately not on his face) and he can't do any magic anymore.

Permalink Mark Unread

What? Not at all.

Temple tries and fails.

He paces and paces, did he imagine the whole thing? No, he didn't. He checks the book for any clue and after five minutes of reading and not finding anything useful he tries again.

Permalink Mark Unread

The wind moves! And a bunch of flower petals appear out of nowhere right in front of him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hell? Temple thinks, but he smiles. He checks the petals.

What happens if he tries to move the air again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, Temple thinks, maybe it's a mana thing. He writes down some ideas for the tests and waits for... ten minutes before trying again.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is now drenched in peach juice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple laughs. That was random.

Then he realizes, yes, that was random. Some kind of magical side effect?

There is no answer maybe Temple should check and see if magic can answers things.

He looks down at his juice-drenched self.

Better to do that after taking a shower and waiting. He wipes some of the juice off himself so his notebook doesn't get stained with juice and writes "check for magic ability to answer questions."

Then he goes and takes a shower, cleans his room, thinks more tests and writes down everything he can think of about the previous results (he seals the petals in a plastic bag in case he can send to analysis or something, some of the juice is stored in a small bottle). He browses the internet for an hour, searching for more people that got a magical result from the book, but doesn't find anything really promised. Some people claim to have gotten positive results, but no one mentions exploring it further. Temple might be a little disappointed in them.

And after the longest hour in his life, Temple tries to call the wind to move again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Breeze! No side effects!

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple sighs with relief.

He writes these down. He decides that... he can wait for fire related tests, if this the kind of thing that takes time to recharge, then Temple will do it after waking up. He performs the tests with earth and a coin.

Permalink Mark Unread

The earth doesn't really move when he asks it to. It vibrates a little, maybe. He can move the coin (a little bit) by calling upon metal and copper, and plastic doesn't work.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is okay tiny bit of earth, Temple believes in you!

(He believes more strongly he will be able to figure out magic better.)

Temple tries some other tests:

"I call upon wind, earth and water to move this coin."

"Magic itself, I call upon to do my will and move this coin."

He blindfolds himself and spins a little, enough so he can't tell which direction he is facing. "Wind, I call upon you to move in the direction of the North," he says, focused in the direction of the wind. Maybe it can move using information he doesn't have.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wind, earth, and water fail to move this coin. Magic itself also fails to move this coin.

But the wind does know where North is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does the water knows where North is? He puts a water drop on a piece of paper and says "Water, my will commands you to move and show me the North!"

Permalink Mark Unread

It skitters along towards the North but is absorbed by the paper before it can move much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple pats the piece of paper affectionately.

He checks some of the previous tests. Does using wind, water and earth to move these three elements have a stronger effect than just moving wind and water? What if he combines wind and earth? Water and earth?

Permalink Mark Unread

The earth inside the pot definitely moves more when he combines the three elements, and the breeze's stronger, and the water even spills over a little bit. Combining two elements is a little bit less good, with water being a slightly better combination with earth than wind is.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is promising, Temple will follow with the testing he thought earlier:

“Wind, obey me, flow and fly as my will demands it!”

“Wind, please help, flow and fly as my will guides you!”

Does politeness help?

Permalink Mark Unread

...not noticeably.

Permalink Mark Unread

How about switching languages? Latin? Spanish? French?

How about changing the length of the magic phrase? "Water, move!" versus "Water, I command you by the power of my will to flow and wave like the tides of the mighty ocean"?

Permalink Mark Unread

Spanish works badly, Latin and French not at all.

The short sentence causes some vibrations, the long one causes the water to drop the bowl onto the floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple cleans that up with a smile on his face.

(The smile might take a long time to vanish. Maybe it never will. Temple is doomed to a life of perpetual smile and magic.)

He tests if whispering or speaking loudly has visible effects.

Then he tests if he call multiple elements to boost another, "Water, I call upon you to wave and flow! Wind and earth, I call upon you to lend your power to give water the speed of the wind and the strength of the earth!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The volume of the spell does not seem to have any visible effects, but calling other elements to help does significantly strengthen the spell. He might find himself covered in more than a few water droplets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple also finds himself laughing. That was fun. Possibly dangerous, but fun.

He is about to go dry things up when he has an idea.

"Water, I call upon you to reverse your flow and undo the mess just created! Return to the bowl! Wind and earth, I call upon you to lend your power to give water the speed of the wind and the stability of the earth!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that works all neatly and stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Temple is too busy giggling madly. If this is a dream, Temple dearly hopes he never wakes up.

Eventually, he gathers enough composure that he will be able to cast a spell without giggling madly.

Okay, the not-being-dramatic test: "Classic element known as the wind, I exert control upon you to move."

Then, the mathematical precision test "Wind, come forth and blow at a 45Âş angle between North and East." and "Wind, come forth and blow between North and East."

Permalink Mark Unread

The first two work normally. Just before he casts the third one he feels a—tug. A very strange feeling.

And then his wall is suddenly painted blue-green.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, okay. That is kinda of problematic.

Temple is aware he should be nervous or freaking out right now, that maybe his mom will react badly.

He can't, maybe that part of him broke because of magic (in one way or another).

Well, the real downside is that he is unlikely to be able to cast any spells for the next while. Not safely.

So... he examines the wall. It is uniformly painted? Does the paint look fresh? He searches for a imperfection that he remembers, it's still there? Does it look like a new coat of painting or that the painting changed?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, no, no, changed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, he is in too good a mood to care. Part of him kinda wants to tell his mom the wall was like this already, but nah. He will just explain the situation to her.

Well, without anything better to do he will compare the multiple results and the things he figured out. Assuming the whole thing is some kind of video-gamey power reverse, Temple makes a conservative estimation of how many "mana points" he should have and how many he can recharge in an hour.

He browses the internet for magic, can he find anything that resembles his experiments?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's nothing that screams "legitimate magical experiments on magic that requires you to ask" at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, well. Temple can continue this.

I guess he won't find anything that points to "actual magicians community site"?

Well, Temple doesn't think he needs to wait exactly one hour until he can cast again, it is just safe (even if takes an eternity).

After 58 minutes and 30 seconds since he first looked at the clock on his newly colored wall, Temple repeats the second part of the precision test. "Wind, come forth and blow between North and East."

Then he does a test he was setting up during that hour.

They don't have an Ouija board, but Temple copies a design from the internet on a large piece of paper and finds a tiny crystal that he ties to a string (he considered a pebble, but he likes doing this with style, and maybe it will help.)

They have a dice cup and dices, for this test he uses a single die.

"Wind, I call the element of the sky for your speed and vision. Earth, I call the element of the ground for your stability and wisdom. Water, I call the element of the sea for your strength and determination. Answer this to me, safe and true! Tell me the result of the hidden dice!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The wind does indeed come forth and blows between North and East.

And his divination attempt fails utterly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple tries it again, but instead of the pseudo-Ouija board he writes down the numbers in a circle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nada.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple notes this.

Uh, what if he tries to have the crystal point north instead?

"Wind, I call the element of the sky for your speed and vision. Earth, I call the element of the ground for your stability and wisdom. Water, I call the element of the sea for your strength and determination. Answer this to me, safe and true! Show me north!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The crystal turns to point North.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ok, so maybe the crystal didn't interfere or anything. He will think of some new spell variations later.

Now that he thinks about it, maybe magic can't read?

He was going to do this later, but now that the question popped up in his mind... what if he writes "Wind, come forth, flow and fly as my will commands it!" and wills it to do magic?

Permalink Mark Unread

The paper... shimmers a little.

But not even a little breeze happens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple writes it again, also focusing. Does the shimmer happen again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, shimmer is a new thing, so Temple is going to be distracted by the shiny.

He writes a third time on a second piece of paper, while also speaking the spell.

Permalink Mark Unread

This time it shimmers and then starts being consumed by a cool cold invisible fire effect, and his spell becomes significantly stronger and more controllable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eureka! More power!" Temple screams happily.

He takes the paper he wrote twice on and speaks the spell.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's exactly as powerful and controllable as the previous one.

Permalink Mark Unread

New spontaneous tests!

First, he writes the spell and recites the words a minute later.

Second, he wills the magic in the paper for a minute then he writes the magic words.

Third, he writes the spell without willing the magic in it, then he tries to will the magic into the words.

Permalink Mark Unread

First test works just like the previous two, second and third test don't do anything to the paper.

Permalink Mark Unread

He repeats the first test, but waits five minutes then, ten minutes, to see if the magic gets less effective.

What if he creates two different pieces of paper and recites the spell while willing for both of them to work?

What if he does the regular spell casting plus paper but puts the paper a meter away?

What if instead of repeating the written words he just says "Wind, obey these magical words."

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't get any less effective the first time he repeats the first test, but the second time causes that weird feeling again, and a very strong gust of wind that messes his room up, and then he can't do magic anymore.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay... back on waiting. Maybe he will clean the mess.

Without magic.

Sigh.

He waits... ten minutes. And tries the test with two papers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Only one of them works, and this time it catches actual fire after it does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple puts the fire out.

Okay, he is going to...wait.

He reads the book some more, browses the internet some more. Paces around his room some more. Decides to write more spell ideas, but after being too tempted to give power to the words he decides to stop.

Instead he goes out and walks so he isn't tempted to cast any spells by being in public.

After walking aimlessly Temple finds a bakery that he hadn't visited much and eats a new kind of cake. It tastes good, but not as good as magic.

His mom is back home and it has been little more than an hour.

Temple considers explaining things to her, but he isn't in the mood, right now, maybe on the weekend.

He continues testing, at intervals that his observations deemed safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

He cannot consume two different pieces of paper with the same sentence on the same spell. Putting the paper a meter away works, if he's focusing on that specific paper. The wind cannot obey magical words not spoken by him at the time of casting.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if he tries to do this with a paper whose location he knows, but can't see?

Permalink Mark Unread

That one doesn't work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does it work if he tries to cast it normally, or is it spent?

What if he puts the spell into two different pieces of paper? "Wind, come forth!" and "flow and fly as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The paper was not spent remotely, and can be used.

Two different pieces of paper with different pieces of the spell make it stronger and better still.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes!

He tests this property again by breaking it into three pieces: "Wind, come forth!", "flow and fly" and "as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Better still!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ok, so he is going to.

His mom call his for dinner, and then asks him to watch some TV, which Temple decides to actually do, just in case his "mana" can get to full again. But before the movie starts, Temple writes the first wind spell down.

Two hours later he gets back he tests the nearly two-hours old wind spell to make sure it didn't lose power during that time.

Then he starts writing the words "Wind, come forth, safely flow and fly as my will commands it!" in individual papers each, casting the spell afterwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

All papers are consumed, and the spell is noticeably but not significantly stronger than three papers separately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe it was a result of the word "safely"? He is not sure is worth it to repeat the test with the same spell, not while his mother is at home.

Next tests. Figure out if he can get away with subtracting or adding parts to the written spell.

(Maybe Temple should just call them scrolls. You are wizard now, Temple. You have magical scrolls)

First, he writes "Wind, come forth, flow and fly as my will commands it!" and tries to cast the magic by just saying "Wind, come forth!"

First-and-a-half, if there is still paper left from the first test, he will use the words "flow and fly as my will commands it!"

Second, he only writes "Wind, come forth" and says the full "Wind, come forth, flow and fly as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The first spell works weakly but doesn't consume the paper, the first-and-a-halfth does not work, the second one does.

Permalink Mark Unread

And how does the second test compare power-wise?

Permalink Mark Unread

Stronger than just "wind," weaker than fuller sentences or more papers.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if he tries "Wind, come forth, flow and fly as my will commands it!", which he is just going to label The First Wind Spell (TFWS for short), leaving the "it" but speaking it out loud?

Permalink Mark Unread

Works but doesn't consume the paper.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh, maybe it is a grammatical problem? Temple didn't even consider that each scroll needs to make sense by itself.

Can he add "it" to the incomplete TFWS scroll and cast it normally?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ok, next series of tests, calling the aid of various things to see which ones count as valid.

Then he will write multiple scrolls of "Wind, come forth", "flow and fly, as my will commands it!" and a set of various scrolls following the formula "by the power of [words]," where [words] will be any of the follow: Sky; Zephyrus; Boreas; Atmosphere; Moon; Sun; Mercury; Venus; Earth; Mars; Jupiter; Saturn; Uranus; Neptune; Pluto; Jesus; Buddha; God; Angels; Heaven; Magic; my words; my voice; my magic; the elements; and then various wind deities until it is time to sleep. He will keep safe intervals between, of course.

Then Temple will cast them using the following pattern: "Wind, come forth"+ "by the power of [words]" + "flow and fly, as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, his sleep time will arrive before he's done even writing the "Sun" paper, but if he's willing to spend about four or five days testing those combinations he might be able to do them all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple will do the batch he got (that goes up until "Sun") and experiment with those before deciding what to do next. He will experiment with those after school.

He wakes up early and the first thing he does in the morning is to sit bolt upright in bed and cast the TFWS. Relieved that it wasn't a dream, he then looks at the clock. He definitely could sleep some more but...

...Well, he could use this time and cast a spell to fix his wall.

He composes the following scrolls:

"Earth, come forth with your stability!"

"Water, come forth with your adaptability!"

"Change the pigments of this wall!"

"Safely undo the effects of magic gone astray!"

"As my will commands it!"

Then he casts the spell.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lookit go! All neat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeeeee! He can do magic! He will proceed his morning routine with a spring in his step. His mom asks why he is so happy and Temple just replies "the world is an amazing place."

He woke up early enough that he should be able to perform a couple of tests before school. What happens if he calls upon the power of the Moon or the Sun to aid his magic?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that depends on what exactly he's doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

He wants to see if there is any noticeable difference when using: "Wind, come forth"+ "by the power of Moon" + "flow and fly, as my will commands it!" or "Wind, come forth"+ "by the power of Sun" + "flow and fly, as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The first one is much more powerful.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is weird... and his mom is calling him to go to school already. Sigh.

Okay, he can go through the day of boring institutional education, motivated by knowing he will be able to cast magic after school, sure.

This is gonna be a long day.

Okay, between classes he will just cast a simple spell in a quiet corner, just keep the practice. What happens if he calls upon the power of "Sky" instead of the "Moon"?

Permalink Mark Unread

About as powerful as when he calls the Sun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple writes down this result. He should probably pay attention to class... but his mind wanders away into thoughts of magic and what he can do, when he does pay attention to something it gives him an idea for a new spell.

Some of his friends wonder if he got a new girlfriend and if that is why he smiling so much. He just laughs.

He finds a quiet restroom and casts the spell again using "Zephyrus".

Permalink Mark Unread

Works, and is stronger than when he used the Moon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay! And Temple writes this result down and starts thinking on how he can use this indication to all kind of spells.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes sometime to consider the theological implications of all of this. He was considering tests that call the name of Jesus and Buddha...

Permalink Mark Unread

...Heh, he will figure it out after class.

Which takes forever to end, and he doesn't find any other opportunities to cast a spell until he is finally back at home.

So... what happens if he calls upon the power of Jesus instead of Zephyrus?

Permalink Mark Unread

Same as Sun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, coming back to the scrolls he already wrote. How about calling the power of "Boreas" and  "Atmosphere"?

Permalink Mark Unread

Boreas works as well as Zephyrus, Atmosphere works a little bit better than Sun but not much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay... the greek myths worked, but not Jesus? Maybe that is a limitation because they are wind gods? But then, what does this mean? Are any of them real?

Also, Temple kinda wants to do more than wind tests now, he was going to check on the power of various planets and wind deities but that would take forever.

He hasn't done anything with fire, he should be able to set it up safely but there is no reason to believe he can't do it, or at least if he can't it will be because he can't do fire at all (maybe there is some elemental affinity in place).

Ooh, he will try flight! The most obvious super-power. He clears his room of fragile objects (there weren't that many) and puts the mattress on the floor for safety.

"Wind, come forth with your weightlessness! Earth, come forth with your safety! Fire, come forth with your speed! Water, come forth with your strength! As my will commands it! Grant me the power to fly!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's flying! Whee! He has quite a lot of control over his movements, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Temple takes a deep breath.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

(this might go on for quite awhile, even after the spell fades.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The spell takes about eight minutes to fade, but fade it does!

Permalink Mark Unread

And then Temple does a celebratory dance.

It goes on for quite a while.

He is still dancing when he sketches the next spell: Invisibility!

"Sun, you are the master of light! Moon, you are the mistress of illusions! Wind, you are powerful yet unseen! I call upon you all of you to grant me the gift of invisibility!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He becomes invisible!

For about ten seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is short, but it was mostly so he could see if he could do it at all...

What if Temple tries the invisibility again, but instead uses only calling the sun and wind? and then only moon and wind?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sun and wind lasts three seconds, moon and wind lasts a bit more than five seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple guesses it might just be more complicated, and that he needs to work in the other elements too.

Well... What he tries combining the two spells and saying them both in order like a unified whole?

Permalink Mark Unread

That depends very much on how he phrases it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He literally says both spells one after the other:

"Wind, come forth with your weightlessness! Earth, come forth with your safety! Fire, come forth with your speed! Water, come forth with your strength! As my will commands it! Grant me the power to fly! Sun, you are the master of light! Moon, you are the mistress of illusions! Wind, you are powerful yet unseen! I call upon you all of you to grant me the gift of invisibility!"

He is trying to figure out how that would interact, specially with spell-duration.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flight lasts about eight minutes, invisibility about ten seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, on one hand he can't exploit multiple spell effects, at least not easily.

On the other hand: Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! He is flying again, this time he makes a circuit of the house.

Okay, new spell:

He gets inside the closet for darkness. "Light, I call upon you to shine and glow! Come to me to illuminate even in the darkness!"

Permalink Mark Unread

And there is light! Sourceless light illuminating the closet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sourceless? Does he cast a shadow anywhere?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnope. No shadows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Weird. He opens the closet. Does the effect stay inside or is it following him?

Permalink Mark Unread

It stays inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm... Temple wonders if he can edit the effects of am active spell?

"Light, I called upon you and you came to shine and glow! Leave the darkness and follow me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. He will try the opposite spell.

"Darkness, I call upon you to shade and hide! Create a shadow that moves as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

There it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool, does it last long? How dark does it gets? What is it shaped like? Just a bi-dimensional shadow on surfaces or a tri-dimensional volume?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a bidimensional shadow on surfaces, shaped like a circle right under his feet, dark but not enough that you can't see what it's hiding. It lasts about a minute.

Permalink Mark Unread

Next spell: He plants a seed inside a small vase and chants. "Life, I call upon you to germinate and grow! Make this seed sprout as my will commands it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Just before he casts he feels a tug—

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple stops himself just in time.

He really needs to find a way to make mana potions.

He waits by cleaning the mess and then doing his homework, there is a lot of it that he neglected recently. He is suddenly annoyed that magic works like this and he needs to wait until it's safe to cast again; it motivates him to go outside. He is going to buy some extra materials for magical tests, but it's still a not-actually magic activity.

Two and a half hours later he is back home and sees some birds on a neighbor's garden...

He goes inside and writes a scroll: "Wind, home of the flying creatures! I call upon you to gain the power over to tame, calm and make a bird fly into my hand!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The scroll doesn't take.

Permalink Mark Unread

Did he feel a tug or anything?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

If he tries writing a regular wind spell does it take?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

How about "Wind, come forth to grant me control over birds!"?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnope.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if he tries "Sun", "Moon", "Sky" or "Nature"? (He will stop if it works).

Permalink Mark Unread

None of them do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

Well... What happens of just try drawing lines in the "scroll"? Scribbles?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nada.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, he will get back to that later. He writes another scroll

"Wind, come forth with your weightlessness! Earth, come forth with your safety! Fire, come forth with your speed! Water, come forth with your strength! As my will commands it! Grant me the power of telekinesis!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That one takes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool. How much can he lift? How fast and precise are the movements? He will pick increasingly heavier furniture to figure it out (being careful not to break anything if the telekinesis stops abruptly).

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, once he consumes the scroll, he can lift stuff up to abooout five kilograms, not very fast, for approximately seven minutes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does this mean he can't nudge things that are heavier? Does it give him any sensory feedback?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't nudge things that are heavier, and there is no sensory feedback.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wind, come forth with your lightness! Earth, come forth with your stability! Fire, come forth with your speed! Water, come forth with your strength! As my will commands it, open what is closed and locked!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Scroll doesn't take again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh, he crosses out and then adds, now the scroll reads:

"Wind, come forth with your lightness! Earth, come forth with your stability! Fire, come forth with your speed! Water, come forth with your strength! As my will commands it, open what is closed and locked! Grant me telekinesis!"

He will also pay attention, does it feel like anything more or less magical is going on?

Permalink Mark Unread

Doesn't work at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh, what if he writes "Wind!" in a different part of the paper, and not as continuation of the other enchantment?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. It is rather consistent.

Temple will perform slightly different tests now. He writes "Wind" on a long roll of paper and then casts the spell, does the entire thing get consumed?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Temple tries that in a small piece of wood, plastic, tissue paper, construction paper, a dead leaf and a fresh leaf just to see if it works in principle.

Permalink Mark Unread

All of them work.

Permalink Mark Unread

And if he attaches a post it note to something does the something gets consumed too?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple glues the post it to another post it first, then writes "wind". Then he takes a piece of paper and tapes it into a cylinder and writes around the seam "wind" such that the first two letters are on one side of the seam and the last two are on the other.

Permalink Mark Unread

When the word is written across different surfaces it doesn't take at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now he wants to test what happens when the paper is damaged but isn't confident on trying, it sounds like something weird would happen.

Well... if something weird happens it's likely proportional to the magical energy used... What happens when Temple tries to invest the magic into the scroll and aims for only a fraction of the usual amount?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Aaaaand what happens if he tries the opposite? Putting more energy in the scroll?

Permalink Mark Unread

That one... sorta works. As in, first the scroll shimmers, then it continues shimmering for a bit longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does the scroll work properly?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! Maybe a bit better, but maybe that's wishful thinking.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries again with The First Wind Spell instead, that ought to make the result clearer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really, that was a pretty weak spell and the difference, if it exists, is not that great anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries writing a TFWS scroll again, but he "pushes" the extra energy more strongly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The shimmering is proportionally more shimmery.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can he keep going on? Regardless of the answer,Temple will take another break, do some house chores (which he really should figure out how to do with magic) and come back maybe forty minutes later to cast it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can, in fact, keep going on!

Permalink Mark Unread

For how long? After a minute or two he will put the thing down and do his chores.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can go that long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool and what happens when he gets back and casts it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Stronger spell! Noticeably so!

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple makes a celebratory dance, it goes on for a while.

Okay, he will try the TFWS again, but he will try to "push" the extra kick for thirty seconds, stop for ten seconds then try pushing it again for another thirty seconds and cast it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple's new nemesis, the tug!

Well, he will have to wait. Sigh.

He spends this time productively by thinking of new test ideas, especially revisiting failed spells that might work better with the new trick.

He waits about an hour before casting that scroll again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not as strong as when he'd spent two minutes charging.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still, that is evidence he might pick up a scroll later and charge it with extra-power. Oooh, maybe he can figure out how fast he recharges or at least how long each spell baseline costs in terms of minutes.

Temple will try to do just that. First step, is creating a scroll, for flight if he has enough mana for that, maybe TFWS if he doesn't, then he will spend the mana until he feels the tug. Does this step work?

Permalink Mark Unread

It does! And he can spend about twenty minutes dumping power into the scroll before feeling a tug, except the tug happens way too fast for him to really notice it while he's dumping the mana and oops the scroll is soaked through and turned into sludge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ew. He cleans up. At least it didn't explode or anything, which is a sign that scrolls can be damaged without causing something weird. Still, what a waste.

Well, Temple will wait about a minute before trying writing a TFWS scroll, he will pay very close attention for that tug. If a minute doesn't cut it then he will wait for another minute, and so on, moving to five minutes intervals after five minutes of failure.

Permalink Mark Unread

After the second five-minute interval he can do it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay! He tries again after six minutes and then waits another minute if it fails, until he can figure out where exactly between five and ten minutes it fails on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somewhere between seven and eight, apparently!

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple rubs his hand gleefully. Some laughter might be involved. He will repeat the process with just the "Wind!" spell and then Flight, followed by Telekinesis.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wind takes about two minutes to recover up to, Flight takes half an hour, Telekinesis almost an hour.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any difference from "Wind" if he tries "Water" or "Earth" instead?

Permalink Mark Unread

Water and Earth seem to cost the same as Wind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple will see if casting spells interferes with recovering the "mana" by casting Flight and seeing if he can cast "Wind!" Two minutes after that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He will need to wait a while to recover enough to cast Flight, and will not have recovered enough to cast Wind two minutes after having done that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Will he be able to cast it at all while Flight is active or he will only recover after that spell expires?

Permalink Mark Unread

Only after the spell expires, as it transpires.

Permalink Mark Unread

Extremely useful, next time he will see if there is a way to end the spell sooner as needed.

Next test: Is the recharge time influenced by whatever you are doing? Temple will try casting two TFTS after spending 16 minutes reading, listening to music (because sitting still is too boring) and jogging.

Permalink Mark Unread

...it looks like it recharges faster after listening to music, and faster still after jogging?

Permalink Mark Unread

What? Really? If he walks does the mana recovery look slower?

Permalink Mark Unread

Faster still, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that he is complaing, but... what? He repeats the reading and listening to music tests just to be sure...

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep, faster, too.

Also at this point it's evening again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple looks at this results... they sure look like he is simply recovering mana faster no matter what.

This does have the downside he can't quite trust his previous estimates of how much a spell takes to recover and... He yawns, maybe he could do a quick test with napping...

He wakes up at least four hours later. He finds a note from his mom telling him that she left him dinner in the fridge and he shouldn't mess up his sleeping habits too much.

Well, in this case, he will write a scroll for flight and charge it for a minute (if he can, and he will pay a lot of attention to that tug). How much better is a minute-charged Flight scroll when compared with regular Flight?

Permalink Mark Unread

Much! He can go for quite a while with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great! He will do that... for science.

Does he has energy for a ten-minute charged flight scroll? And how much better does that performs?

Permalink Mark Unread

He does! It does not perform ten times better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh, diminishing returns. Temple shrugs and writes this down, he will try to get a third data point later. Maybe he could check how much better multiple-scrolls Flight is...

...he could try coming up with a proper invisibility spell since the previous one didn't quite work. It would mean he would be able to fly outside.

Temple writes multiple scrolls, just in case writing a single one takes too much mana.

"Wind, come forth and give me the invisibility of air!"

"Water, come forth and lend me transparency of water!"

"Fire, come forth and lend me your power to aid me in this task!"

"Earth, come forth and lend me your stability to aid me in this task!"

Permalink Mark Unread

All scrolls take.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he will try cast it... and if there is no dreaded tug, how long does it last?

Permalink Mark Unread

Given that he didn't charge any of the scrolls, not a whole lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's long enough for him to take flight or land outdoors. And this was meant to find out the baseline. Does he have enough energy to do that again and then charge the "Wind, come forth and give me the invisibility of air!" for a minute?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, well, he will sleep it off then do it in the morning and test it in the afternoon.

Permalink Mark Unread

It lasts about a minute longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh? What if he tries just a "Wind, come forth and give me the invisibility of air!" with a one minute charge, how does that compare?

Permalink Mark Unread

Lasts a little bit longer than with the four uncharged scrolls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fascinating. If confusing. Temple really is not sure if he is spending more energy this way or not, but it is certainly practical information.

Okay, next thing to try... magic detection? Magic detection.

First, Temple creates a TFWS scroll to have something to detect.

Then he writes:

"Light, come forth as I call upon your power to grant me enlightenment. Grant my eyes the power to sense magic just like it was light."

After seeing if it takes or not he will try writing another scroll:

"Light, come forth as I call upon your power to grant me enlightenment .

Wind, come forth with your ever-reaching might to bypass the obstacles of the hidden unknown.

Water, come for with your powerful strength to wear down the barriers of the untrue deceptions.

Fire, come for with your passionate energy to banish the darkness of the undiscovered secrets.

Earth, come forth with your enduring stability to protect from the overwhelming revelation.

Grant my eyes the power to sense magic just like it was light."

Permalink Mark Unread

Both scrolls take.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he will cast the first one and then the other after the first's effect expires.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can definitely see his scroll glowing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can he see his own magic?

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently not.

Permalink Mark Unread

He writes another "Light, come forth as I call upon your power to grant me enlightenment. Grant my eyes the power to sense magic just like it was light" scroll, then a scroll with just "Water" and casts the first scroll to compare what the "Water" scroll and TFWS scrolls look like.

Then he will write:

"Light, come forth as I call upon your power to grant me enlightenment. Grant me the power to see my own magic and its strenght just like light allows me to see my own reflection."

"Light, come forth as I call upon your power to grant me enlightenment. Grant me the power to see any magic my own or others', weak or strong, close or distant, simple or complex, drawing from any element or source. Give me the vision to perceive magic just as well as I see light!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The two scrolls don't look different at all to his magic-vision, and the two new spells he tries to scroll don't take.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. Maybe it's a property of magic inside people? Or he can only perceive magic outside himself?

Actually, he isn't at all sure other people have magic. Certainly someone else tried the kind of things he did, billions tried variations of what he did. He can't be the only one that got it right, can he? His internet search on that book remains unconclusive. Urgh.

Okay, what he is going to do now is go out for a bit and search for groups of people and cast the "Light, come forth as I call upon your power to grant me enlightenment. Grant my eyes the power to sense magic just like it was light" spell quietly to himself and see if any of them turns out to be magical under this spell. He will try that for an hour and change tactics if no one turns out to be magical.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone turns out to be magical! There's this boy returning from school, glowing in a different way than the two scrolls.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Oh my magic, he is cute.)

Temple approachs the cute magical boy.

"Hello, I am Temple. Sorry for bothering you, but do you mind talking for a minute or so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...uh, sure, I'm not busy," he says, but doesn't stop walking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple follows. He takes a notebook and pen from a pocket (which he was carrying in case of emergency scrolling).

"You can treat this as an amateur survey. Don't be weirded out by the questions: First, do you believe in magic? And if yes, why so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, 'cause I can shapeshift since I was a baby," he says somewhat sarcastically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple takes a look at him in surprise, then grins. "Cool, and I can do things like make the wind do my biding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's nice," he replies neutrally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, I said this is just an amateur survey. So the thing I am going to do next is clearly a trick."

He takes out a TFWS scroll and casts it quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple will just smile at Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde notices he has stopped walking. He resumes walking.

"So I'm Sadde, by the way. Why are you talking to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magic detection! Just came up with it... I have been haphazardly testing things and I was trying to see my own magic, but couldn't and then decided to see if other people had magic, you are the first."

If Temple thinks that the plan "speak with the first magic person you meet" has any flaws, he definitely isn't showing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh. I'm gonna need more evidence than that, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, what kind of evidence? I don't quite want to do anything more obvious than the scroll vanishing thing while in public like this... Maybe you could see if the magic detection works for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, if you think I can do this magic myself that'd actually be pretty compelling evidence yes...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay. Keep in mind I don't know if this works for you."

He writes a magic detection scroll and hands it to Sadde. Then he instructs the other on how to use it, warning about the "tug".

Permalink Mark Unread

It works.

Okay.

"Okaaaaay I was going home but I'm sure mom will love to know I just got somewhere with the magic thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple does not dance in public, but he does manage to convey the sentiment through sheer joy.

"This is so great! How far did you go with magic? You mentioned shape-shifting as a baby, is that true?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, though I never got any farther than that. It's, um, not very thorough, kinda intuitive, nothing—I'd never tried just saying things out loud with papers like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I only discovered it because of a book. Not a magical book, it was a very sarcastic fantasy novel, where the author proposed the experiment of casting a spell as a means to disprove magic in the real world, except it did the opposite for me. I've been experimenting with magic since then. There this annoying energy or mana or fuel limitation problem that I am still trying to figure out or at least find a way to measure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never run into a mana problem by changing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, how does your changing work? I haven't tried anything like that. Once tried to making a seed germinate and felt the 'tug', be careful of the damn tug."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. It just—does? Like I want to change and I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, how much can you change? Are you using it right now? Maybe the spell picked up on the fact that you are using magic instead of being magical. I haven't checked to see if anyone can do it, but the book is moderately famous and there weren't a lot of fans in the internet claiming that the book's exercise worked."

Gosh, this Temple character is very chipper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not using it right now, no, but I use it to practice my horrible vice of being genderfluid in a more thorough way than mere makeup."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is a more practical use than I expected. Can you use it to heal small wounds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmhm, bruises and such."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, I wonder if spellcasting can expand on that, but I suspect it's something to be careful about. Hey, wanna come to my place and do magic experiments?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...nnnooooo, we've just met, you could be from a magic conspiracy wanting to kidnap me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True, for all I know you could be from a conspiracy too. Uh, well, do you want to find somewhere neutral where we can do magic experiments or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the one who approached me!" he protests. "Anyway, got a place in mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was an impulse decision! I don't know how rare magical people are, maybe we are the only ones in the city! Well, there is that park nearby? I think we can get enough cover that no one would notice the scrolls disappearing, as long we don't do anything too attention-getting like flying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you can fly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup, it lasts like, 8 minutes by default and is a lot of energy, but yes! I can probably get it to work better, but I keep getting distracted by new things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you get distracted from flying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"By trying to figure out how to stay invisible long enough so I can fly outside."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just go out in the evening, humans don't look up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thought about it, even considered doing it by casting invisibility to go up and again to go down, but then I got distracted with figuring out how the other things work. I think I discovered how to extra-charge scrolls in the same day? My notes are back at my house, but I am sure something kept coming up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, fair enough, I guess, but still, flying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, believe me, I know even just inside flight was great!"

Where is this the conveniently located park?

Permalink Mark Unread

Just over there, and there they are.

"Okay, so, show me the goodies," he asks when they're reasonably isolated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple doesn't have his notes, but of course here are some goodies: Here is what he has been calling The First Wind Spell (he pats the paper) and you can make a scroll by writing a spell down and willing the magic like this, and you can also charge it up further like this. Temple had no luck with things like invoking the power of the plastic but he managed to call upon the power of fire (hasn't set anything on fire yet), wind, water, earth, sun, moon, sky and so on. Writing on non-paper surfaces also works. Quality of paper apparently doesn't matter. This is his magic detection spell. This is the flight spell. This is telekinesis. This one is for light but he is not sure about its range...

Permalink Mark Unread

He writes.

It shimmers.

He ooohs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool. Does Sadde want to experiment further? See if they can charge up each other scrolls? Maybe they could figure out casting together?

Permalink Mark Unread

Duck yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Duck?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't like swearing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cute." Temple says sincerely. "Wanna try the scroll co-charging?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The what now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I mean. Like, I said earlier I can charge scrolls. I am curious if the both of us can charge the same scroll."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, let's try it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, so they will use magic detection scrolls: one as a baseline; one charged for a minute by Temple; another one-minute charge by Sadde; and one charged for a minute by them both. Is Sadde okay with this test? If yes, then how does the twice-charged scroll behave?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Sadde's scroll is less effective, and theirs together isn't as effective as the other two added.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if I am getting stronger? The other day I tried to time how fast I can get the necessary mana back and I noticed it was recharging faster."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Means I'd probably be behind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it could also be a bunch of other things. Maybe it's like a skill, or a muscle, or something about the intent of how we are pushing, or the fact that I wrote the scroll, or maybe something else entirely including combinations of all the alternatives..." By the end of it Temple seems to be talking mostly to himself. Then he appears to remember that Sadde is there. "So, want to try a variety of this again or something else? I almost want to have you try feeling the tug, but I am not sure it would be safe. Even if it just covers this place with petals or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds flashy. You said you had notes, do you have hypotheses listed in these notes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Flashy? And I do have some hypotheses! They are a bit of a mess to decipher, though. I was writing them purely for myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of petals appearing out of nowhere would be flashy, I mean. Anyway, we should do this more systematically, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yes. Do you have suggestions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spreadsheets! With the exact time each spell takes, and when it was cast, and which spells were cast before we felt a tug, and the evolution of that over time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have some of the times written down, but don't have those notes with me and they aren't in spreadsheet format." He makes a note of that. "I tried to time the tug thing by pouring all the mana-slash-energy-slash-whatever in a scroll then waiting until I could cast a spell safely, but stopped that after it became apparent that I was recharging faster and then tried seeing my own magic... granted I gave up on that avenue of research because it's annoying not being able to cast something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not very scientifically-minded of you, is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope, not really. My general approach was generally, write a bunch tests down, get a new interesting result and then forget all the tests that I wrote. I mean, I am working on limited energy reserves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All the more reason to be systematic! So you can learn the most efficient way to test."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know but it is so distracting! The magic is right there, tempting me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you do things more efficiently you can have more magic in the future!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know." Temple pouts. "Well... if you help at least I will have some external pressure to actually focus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"External incentives are always a great idea. Or, at least, frequently a great idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, or at least working with two people... Uh, I wonder if it's a good use of our time to search for others..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is! They could have all kindsa knowledge we don't!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could try the method of walking around and using the magic detection on large groups of people. Hopefully you are an indicator that magic is sort of common, instead of being a coincidence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once is chance," he nods. "Sounds like a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. Do you want to do that now or talk a bit more while we are still relatively private? I mean, I should cast magic detection just to be sure no one around is magical."

And he does that, looking around to see if the joggers or people walking their dogs have magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

They do not.

"Is there anything we need to talk about that won't be speculation which can be resolved by finding someone more knowledgeable than us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nooot off the top of my head and not without my notes..." Temple admits. "We should, like, take turns casting magic detection to avoid exhausting ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a good idea. How long does it last?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple gives him the duration, since they were just playing around with that spell anyway it shouldn't be hard to remember. "It might be a good idea to wait until we come across large groups of people, but that depends on how long we are going to search and we don't have to go through the entire city in one go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have it active right now, though, right? We can just go look around for people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do, no one in sight is. Do you know places with a lot of people nearby? I already searched around..." and Temple describes some places. He has been searching in a vaguely spiral-pattern.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure any pattern's really justified, people move a lot, but continuing that pattern's as good an idea as any I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounded like the natural thing to do," Temple shrugs, "I skipped a couple of places that were too empty but I remember each ones in case the door to Diagon Alley is in there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde starts leading the way.

"I don't think I'm a metamorphmagus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe, maybe not. The important question is to which House you would get sorted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Slytherin, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ravenclaw here. Why Slytherin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cunning and ambition!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ambition?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna take over the world, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You forgot the evil laughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why evil, I wanna make everyone immortal and solve scarcity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's traditional! But we can wait until we figure out a dramatic thunder spell. Also, immortality and scarcity?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those seem to cover most problems in the world, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't that be mainly altruistic instead of ambitious?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why 'instead of'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like the most relevant motivator," Temple shrugs, "at least for things on the scale of immortality and scarcity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This still does not make it mutually exclusive with ambition."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't say it was mutually exclusive, I said 'mainly altruistic'. Granted it is not a relevant trait for House sorting. I don't think any House has a specific claim to it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You said 'instead of,' though, that implies it's an either-or thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is an either-or thing for which motivation is more relevant, but doesn't exclude multiple motivations being relevant. Meaning, you could be motivated by altruism and ambition, but one would still win out over the other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never said ambition was the main drive behind this goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. I still think you should've done the not-necessarily-evil-but-still-dramatic laughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't give the correct impression, you grimaced about it even without the laughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did I? Well, personally I think acting like a cartoon villain makes it less likely people are going to think you are real-world villain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enh. Anyway, I don't think there are main drives behind this goal, or a proper rank. The ambition and the altruism work as motivations for different aspects of it: being ambitious determines the scale, being altruistic determines the project."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense, although I can't see the appeal of like, actually taking over the world, sounds like too much work even if I would like to help with the immortality and no scarcity parts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's why you're a Ravenclaw."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. I'm a Ravenclaw because I am curious about experiencing everything there is to experience including inventing new experiences. But I won't complain about helping with immortality research."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean you're a Ravenclaw-and-not-a-Slytherin because you do not understand the appeal of taking over the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see the appeal, it is just not enough given the time and effort of ruling the world even if you are non-interventionist despot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No I'm a very interventionist despot and it is very much enough. You can be my researcher-in-chief or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me!" Temple rubs his hands gleefully.

No sign of other magical people yet?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope! And his spell runs out.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tells Sadde as much and would he like to cast the magic detection this time around.

"You know, I almost want to go around conspicuously using scrolls, but what you said about a magical conspiracy sounds plausible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Chesterton's Fence, man," he says, then casts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's the name for the thing where, like, you shouldn't change the state of things until you understand why they are the way they are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not sure how it applies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't know why magic is not common knowledge, and until we do it might be a terrible idea to make it so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, I didn't mean like that. I was thinking about coming up with some story about being a magic trick - the stage kind - that we are practicing or whatever, except anyone who knows would be able to identify it." Temple shrugs. "I mean, still not a good idea because there might be Aurors that would take exception to us doing something so flagrant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, yes, that falls under the thing, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The underlying purpose was different, but okay. No magic yet? Ooh, you know what we should do? Cast that at school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, that'd be a pretty good idea—how old are you, by the by?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sixteen, and you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sixteen, too, what are the odds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No idea... Ooh, and maybe all adult wizards are at work and wizard children too small to walk the street themselves are at home..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That still leaves quite a range, and we don't seem to be finding any of any kind anyway!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple pats him in the back. "Hey, we found each other so at least magical people finding each other outside the presumed-magic conspiracy is still possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Again, still don't know that you're not a conspirator."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple sporfles. "That is just what you would say if you were a conspirator tricking me into a false sense of security!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likewise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sigh. I guess I will have to invent truth-detection. After the dramatic thunder spell. Got to have priorities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you're joking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't have enough of a plan to actually joke about, but truth detection might be hard enough that it can't be done without extensive work, while dramatic thunder would be simpler." Temple shrugs. "What I reeeeeally want is measuring my own mana now, it bugs me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you make a truth-detection spell and it works we can fully trust each other and work on that together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about this. I will give one go, like, ten minutes, of brainstorming the thunder spell then I work on the truth detection for maybe a day or two. Assuming I don't think of a better avenue for the mana measurement. That damn tug of low mana is my nemesis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you expect the truth detection spell to be that much harder? Other than, you know, the obvious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Creating sound and light is basically a spin on the things already did, just more precisely. While truth-detection involves at least some form of mind-reading and that sounds harder?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This magic system seems to be fueled by dramaticism, though. Like, if you just compose a poem about how much you want to know the truth..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...or if you find a poem that someone composed about knowing the truth? There ought to be one of those around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't necessarily mean an actual poem, just. Something along the lines of the other spells."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, why do you have to be so practical and non-dramatic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should've looked for a Gryffindor if you wanted drama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try to include that parameter on the magic detection 2.0."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To be truthful, though, I will totally have endless fun creating the most outrageous chants with this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, can we at some point get together to cast a powerful ritual from an old parchment scroll during a dramatic storm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you can find a suitably dramatic and usefully prosocial ritual—or merely useful or cool one—sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, good thing I can be your researcher-in-chief or you will have no fun on your way to snatch the world in your iron-like benevolent grasp."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will totally have fun, but it will be derived from snatching the world in my iron-like benevolent grasp, I don't need to take detours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will keep that in mind, so I don't distract you with better flight spells. Those aren't prosocial, like, at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No but they're otherwise useful!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having overdramatic fun is totally useful! Its fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not useful for my goals!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you expect being a benevolent despot without having a sense of overdramatic fun? It might actually be a required skill with magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just have priorities—any overdramatic fun extraneous to the goal of becoming a benevolent despot and keeping myself sane will not happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaaaw. Not even a bit of overdramatic fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like I said, only as much as I need to to become a good ruler and function well!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, then I am very reassured we will get to cast rituals during dramatic thunderstorms, using parchment scroll, ideally the stars and planets would be aligned just right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless there is a more efficient way to get whatever we want or we have a few hours to kill. My magic detection spell ran out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple casts it again.

"How long do you want to search today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno, maybe we just walk around 'til it gets dark?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good, if I hadn't found you I was just going to try to approach the problem from a different angle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully something with a very large range, which I don't think would be easy, or something that led me to other magic people, kinda like a compass, which sounds slightly more complex."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But probably in general more fruitful than walking around aimlessly, I think I must've been a fluke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- wait, no. We have no idea how common magic folk is and I wasn't even sure the spell worked on people - it wouldn't work when I tried to measure my own mana. I felt it was worth spending an hour or so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, it totally was, but I mean, by the end of our hour here if we haven't found anyone else I think we might as well conclude we're a freaky coincidence." Beat. "Or morphic resonance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Meaning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, not a Discworld fan, I take it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope, but please explain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some characters on the Disc—recur. There are several, uh, versions, so to speak, of Mr. Dibbler, and of Corporal Nobby Nobbs, and stuff like that, because their archetypes resonate well. More or less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And they sometimes meet? Or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, never, but it's a handwavy way of explaining coincidences."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So... What? Are you saying I am going to meet another you when we get separated or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'm saying us meeting in the first place is weird and probably magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds a bit much, but I can't just tell you it's impossible. I am up to be the wizard of this adventure party. But it could be something else like... Environmental factors that make two wizards manifest near each other?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...manifest? Also I have had magic since I was one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being born or acquiring their powers. Maybe it's contagious and you gave me the magic flu at some point. Maaaybe the magic detection only works on people that already have done magic, me via spells and you via the shapeshifting. I should've told my mom about this sooner and gotten her to cast a spell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mom definitely can't do magic like I can but maybe these spells..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worth checking on both accounts. Do you have anyone else that knows or you are willing to trust about magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me neither." Sigh. "We could learn so much more with more than two to four people to research with. I hope we can find more of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that magic compass would be a blessing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna try figuring that out or should truth detection come first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh I was mostly joking about the conspiracy, I'm not going to your place today but I don't, like, think you're evil or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is reasonable, but I was assuming that truth detection would be useful on its own merits," Temple shrugs. "I should make efforts on both fronts in case it is something easier than it sounds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd prioritize the compass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking more along the lines of, ten minutes trying to do the truth spell just in case it's that easy, and then try the other, but sure, I won't mind prioritizing the compass. I mean, testing the truth spell would be complicated without telling more people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I probably should tell mom about this, so she could help, but..."

"I just realized that I told you before telling her and I think she will be upset about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would've told my mom first of anyone no matter what, I'm pretty sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"That—wasn't meant to be judging or anything. I just mean, we're really close, she and I. Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't suppose you could like, wait to tell your mom so at least mine isn't the third person to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...my mom has known since I was one," he points out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant about me." Sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Um. Uh. If you tell yours as soon as you get home? I mean I kinda—don't really keep secrets from my mom. At all. Ever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She has been working late lately. Urgh, I will have to deal, it won't affect anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not your fault." Temple smiles politely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, but I still feel regret about the situation," he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, next time, try not to be more obviously magical in public," Temple says a bit more cheered up. "Urgh, okay, there is nothing we can do about it." Sigh. "I feel like brainstorming ideas for the magic compass spell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Before we finish looking around for more magical people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe, I wouldn't recommend casting it for the first time while in public, in case the magical accident happens - we need a name for those. Oh, and mana doesn't recover while a spell is active, or if it does it is slower."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. Well, maybe we could go to a library or something tomorrow, and test there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That should work. I mean, lets avoid ending up covered in pear juice amidst books, but that should work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...right, we should definitely try to not be covered in juice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Especially because I have no idea why it was juice, or random petals, or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems pretty random from what you described."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, and it was... funny random, not my molecules being rearranged in lethal ways random."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seemed to be limited in, like, power and scope, apparently? They were all small spells, and small effects..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think creating things like petals is rather strong, unless it was teleportation, in which case I hope that whoever lost that pear juice didn't need it. But it is rather proportional, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure it's running on any sensible scale of what should be possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who would think magic is like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well there are several possible magic systems that don't suffer from this problem!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaaaw you wanted a more serious magic system? Maybe our dramatic storm ritual can be so our magic system gets more serious, maybe instead of a tug and funny effect we can get it to cause pain or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want it to be serious I want it to be sensible."

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes him giggle. "What would a sensible magic system would look like to you then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure, never having actually stopped to think about it, but not this!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More giggling. "So far, my main complaint is the lack of mana bars and easily available mana potions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How dare real world magic not be like video games."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't even get a tutorial level or an annoying expository NPC! So unfair!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, you at least got an instructions manual, all I got was lousy shapeshifting and this T-shirt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, now you can have both? I don't even have lousy shapeshifting or your T-shirt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet you could get lousy shapeshifting using spells, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a little afraid of trying that kind of magic just yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because it sounds easy to mess up even if I don't mess up by causing the out of mana accident? I mean, I also haven't tried to set anything on fire either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mess up how?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno, in body horror ways? Or even just hurting myself in a more conventional way. Not everyone here has grown up used to lousy shapeshifting magic!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The other results make this seem like it won't really... be a problem?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, dude. I have been experimenting with magic for less than a week, I'm willing to wait a tad longer before experimenting with rearranging my face, I'm too attached to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could experiment with rearranging bits of your hair that aren't attached to your body."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple frowns. "That does sound like a great experiment idea, but not necessarily one that makes me feel safe about shapeshifting more generally, not with myself. Also, now I am wondering about things like, using someone's hair as a spell component."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Component'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A sympathetic component or something. You take someone's hair and uses it so magic can identify who you are talking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why can't you just write their name or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you can, maybe you need more than that. Maybe you can have the magic go 'find whoever matches these DNA samples'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like it bears testing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sure does!" Temple rubs his hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't quite fit the theme, though, I don't think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, unless you can make a poem or a declamation or even a limerick with that. I'd be pretty impressed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if we can just hire a poet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was mostly joking, your experiments seem to indicate that's not really necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we are going to have to hire one for the dramatic thunderstorm ritual."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you wanna do that it's your money."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fiiiine, I won't use the research budget to make the dramatic ritual more dramatic. Jeez."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for your restraint."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I live to serve my benevolent overlord." Temple makes a very comical and exaggerated bow, it's a miracle that it doesn't cause him to topple face first in the concrete ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, I haven't even done anything yet and already have my first servant, everything's going according to plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not taking the benevolent overlord that seriously, but I don't see any reason to oppose it yet?" Temple shrugs. "And it sounds better than me being the hero with all the responsibility of saving the world from my former friend that went dark and corrupt. Possibly as a result of some tragic accident involving me. I don't like that story, your premise is way more interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, I very much prefer it to all the bad romances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, if we go to the traditional route they would pair me up with some girl that I have no chemistry with and then the fans would ship us anyway. Let's not be that poorly written canon, let's be the AU fic we truly deserve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you started saying lots of words that I'm sure mean things but I have no idea what they are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, so in our sadly hetero-normative society of ours, producers often fail to properly portray even straight relationships. This often leaves fans feeling frustrated because the actual-in-the-show romance tends to occupy too much screen-time or influence the show's plot negatively. Also, the others characters' interactions can end up having a better dynamic than the show's official romances, and a lot of those frustrated fans see this and think 'these two are a better pair than the insipid official couple, and I prefer these to the official couple'. That is called shipping. Also, fans often write literature called fanfiction based on their preferred shows with various premises, including 'the couple I prefer gets together'. AU stands for alternate universe. Fanfics that diverge from the original story too much would get the label of AU..."

"...What I am saying is that we shouldn't fall into a stupid show premise and just get it right the first time. For the sake of ours fans, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. This has been a ride. Yes, I agree we should do it right from the start. Do you think the audience would ship us, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, the hero and the tragically lost friend that became a villain? The fans would be ridiculously emotionally invested, I am certain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm confused about which of us is supposed to be which."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the villain. Since you want to rule the world through benevolence. Real heroes don't want to cause pro-social changes with their magical powers. Haven't you learned anything from Harry Potter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have learned that murder is a terrible way to become immortal, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, are you always this reasonable all the time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do my best."

Permalink Mark Unread

So... No signs of magic? No? Okay.

"I think I should go home now, mom isn't coming for a while, but I should, like, make her dinner to put her in a good mood or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll probably practice some more magic tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

They exchange contact information.

"It was fascinating meeting. Good luck and be careful with magic." They depart.

Temple goes home an tidies up the place and then starts working on the compass spell before his mother comes home.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next day Sadde gets a message:

1) I have a working Compass spell. 2) I think using magic tires you. 3) Guess who fell asleep early and didn't tell his mom about magic?

Permalink Mark Unread

I'm sorry. How do you know it works?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tested with scrolls and got it to make it show the direction of magic things further away. It definitely picked something magical outside my house. No idea if it was you or something else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool! Meet after school?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course! And they decide on a place. Temple will already be there and he squints when he sees Sadde.

"Okay... so the thing that I was detecting is definitely not you. Also, hello. How was your day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Normal day, school, that kinda stuff, yours? Did you manage to tell your mom?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes and no. I fell asleep early and she arrived late and I didn't want to have this conversation in the morning before she went to work. Pretty sure it is the mana thing making me tired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...that sounds like an unambiguous no, what's the yes part?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, I meant I had a normal day at school. Nothing unusual, no extra magical friends to help us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shame. Anyway, how's the compass work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It gives this sense of a 'pull' towards magical things, I think there is some variation between strength of the magic and how far it is but it might be my imagination. I triangulated the unknown source of magic by moving around and it's that way." He points.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go that way, then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple leads. The place is too small to count as a park, but has trees, benches and a gazebo-like structure.

The source of magic is behind the gazebo in an area that is blocked from view by tall bushes and...

"...I am pretty sure the thing is underground." He looks around. "Should we dig and find out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no we should probably leave the mysterious magic artefact buried here are you kidding me of course we should."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is the right answer. Temple tries magic and if that proves not to be fast enough, will just dig with his own hands and clean them later (with magic, magic is so convenient!).

Permalink Mark Unread

Magic sans scrolls is definitely very slow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Too bad he didn't bring any paper and pencil. Oh, wait, of course he did! He tries a mixture of both, ideally to get the ground fluffier and easier to dig through.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fairly easy to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay so they dig out... it is not an actual pirate treasure chest (too small) but it is reminiscent enough, maybe a thematic jewelry box or something. The lock breaks apart the moment Temple pulls the thing from the ground. He opens the box and inside...

Permalink Mark Unread

...a book!

"Ooookay this is even better than an ancient magical artifact it is an ancient magical tome of forbidden lore!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes!" Temple fist pumps the air. "Lets see what dark magic it has inside."

Temple notices the lock - can he open it? If so, what is inside?

Permalink Mark Unread

It opens as soon as he touches the book, actually. Very mysterious.

And inside: cards!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, Temple totally noticed that.

He takes the cards out. "Maybe it is some kind of alternative Tarot deck?" Temple ponders out loud, while shuffling through the cards. "With weird cards like 'The Sweet'?" He says holding up the relevant card.

Permalink Mark Unread

The card glows and a plant nearby turns into candy plant.

"...um."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple holds the card away from himself and eyes it suspiciously for a moment. It isn't going away...

"Did you see that?" Temple ask, he then pokes the candy plant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, ergo 'um.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um indeed." Temple says. His confusion starts to turn into a smile. "The Sweet?" He repeats, wary of that tug and vaguely pointing at another nearby plant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Candy!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooooh." Temple pages through the cards and picks one that doesn't look too dangerous to test. "Flower! The Flower? The Flower."

Permalink Mark Unread

Just "Flower" seems to work.

The card glows and becomes a girl who starts dancing and making cherry tree flowers appear out of thin air in a soft rain of fluff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is surprised enough that he drops the cards. "Uh, hi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She stops the dancing to offer a curtsy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, were you like... trapped in the card or something?" Temple tugs Sadde because he is a bit overwhelmed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and shakes her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...sheeeee looks an awful lot like the drawing that was on the card actually um are you the card?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple tries a reassuring smile. "So, your name is Flower? Uh, are you feeling alright? I am not sure how long you were in there." Temple points at the hole in the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and starts swaying a little bit to nonexistent music and summoning more flowers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, good so far. "Is each one of those cards like you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean... I get they are different, but are they beings like you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She continues not seeming to understand him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you're understanding me, but that is okay. I might try another card next, if that sounds like a bad idea to you. Do tell us now." Then Temple turns to Sadde. "Do you want to pick a card?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeees," he says, and starts going through the cards and—" Okay, this looks like a me card." He reveals the card he picked: The Change.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooooh, let's try that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, let's see if this can do what I want it to, Change, turn me into a girl!"

The card glows, then disappears and makes Sadde himself glow—

Permalink Mark Unread

—and it works!

"Ha! Can I keep this one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple looks hi-her up and down and smiles. "Of course!" He looks over the deck, discards some of the more dangerous-looking cards (specially The Erase, he might lock that one up if it is not cruel to the poor thing)... "Oh, going to try this one. The Windy! Crea-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

The card glows in his hand, and a strong gust of wind centred on the pair of them and going up appears out of nowhere, and all the cards start going off in different random directions.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hell? He tries grabbing the cards before they fly away.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does Sadde! The Change seems to be safely around his body, so it isn't affected, but he manages to grab The Shield and The Through, while Temple succeeds at rescuing The Glow, The Jump, and The Twin from the storm.

And then it ends and the other cards are gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple holds the cards tightly in his hand. He looks down and then decides better than announce which cards he got while holding them and just says. "What the hell?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde—

Permalink Mark Unread

—shapeshifts back. "I second that sentiment." He looks at the Flower, whose flowers were all scattered with the cards. "Do you know what that was about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple eyes the thing eerily. "Please, if you don't know anything, could you go back to card form. We need a moment to think."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bows and becomes a card.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, it is less likely they are going to buried in flowers. That would be an undignified predicament. Also: What The Hell?

"Uh... Maybe we should leave in case someone saw... whatever that was?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's—let's do that."

And then the book starts glowing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What now?" Temple says looking at the glowing book.

Permalink Mark Unread

...a floating, winged plush bear is what! Emerging from the book and making the lion on its cover disappear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. Hello? Are you like... one of the cards?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks up at him and says, "Helloooo! I'm Cerberus" (Kerberos) "and not one of the cards, wow that was a good nap, who're you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am Temple... this is Sadde. What are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm the guardian beast of the Cards, created to protect them and the world!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...protect the world from what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Clow Cards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they dangerous?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He floats onto the grass and the book stands up of its own volition behind him. "They can be, if they don't have a master," he explains, turning around to look at the book, which opens to reveal its content, "but these ones are fi—where are they?! What happened?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh... We found them, and then I used The Wi-" He covers his own mouth before finishing the word, instead he waves The Windy with his other hand, along with his other cards, "and the cards started flying away everywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? Why? Windy wouldn't do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She totally did it, dude. Sadde, tell him what you saw."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He said 'Windy' and the cards sorta scattered..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you used Windy and the cards are all gone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes... except for these ones?" Temple he points at the cards they have. "So... how fucked are we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is bad... This is really bad." He looks around. "Where are we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In a... not exactly a park. We found the book buried in that spot over there."

He looks over at the state of the not-treasure chest thing.

"Wait, how long you were asleep?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...thirty years."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd been there for over a hundred years!" he protests.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple blinks. "Oh my god, really? Who did that to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clow Reed, my creator and creator of the cards. It is my sacred duty to guard them and guide whoever is their current master."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay how about we move this conversation elsewhere? I'm actually okay going to your place now if you want, Temple."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple looks around. "Yeah, we should've already been gone. Uh... Cerberus can you come with us? Maybe in a backpack if you don't mind?"

Temple will collect the book and the box it was in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...okay." He flies into the backpack.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry," Temple tells him and is very careful with the backpack while they go to his home at brisk pace.

Occasionally he mutters "What the hell?" to himself.

Eventually they arrive at a small but well kept house in a relatively nice neighborhood. Temple leads Saddes inside and opens the backpack. "You okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I'm fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you mentioned a Clow Reed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He was the most powerful sorcerer ever, and he created the Clow Cards and me to protect them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... so the cards are mostly gone, what now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which of you opened the book?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde points at Temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you will have to bring all the cards back!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... fair enough. How do I do that?

Permalink Mark Unread

He flies to Temple's desk and the book follows. "I will have to make you the cardcaptor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... as long this doesn't mean a deal with the devil for my soul."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who's that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, religious figure that supposedly does this kind of deal for evil purposes... I mean, what is a cardcaptor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cardcaptor is the master of the Clow Cards, and will have the powers to find them and capture them and protect the world from sure destruction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...sure destruction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of destruction?" Temple says, not sounding alarmed, because he can't be alarmed enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cards act according to their nature, and some of them are very powerful and could bring a great catastrophe to the world..."

Permalink Mark Unread

And Temple remembers several of those cards and says... "Fucking hell. How do I capture them then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will accept the contract to become cardcaptor—"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whooooaaa whoa hold it there tiny bear, contract?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay..." Temple doesn't ask again if selling his soul is involved in this...

Permalink Mark Unread

"He will agree to find and capture the Cards, and in exchange they will share their power with him and their magic will be entwined."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Does this mean more magical power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When you're using the Cards, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, will I be able to use magic without them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but it'll be more difficult."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, man. But like, will I be able to get to a normal power level eventually?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll be as powerful as you are, it'll just be easier to use Cards and harder to use other things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the world will be in danger either way. Okay, what do I need to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

A little sphere of blue light appears inside the lock—

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay no this is definitely not enough information to sign some contract with a magical talking bear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple scratches his head. "No?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! First of all, is there any other way of capturing the Cards without becoming a cardcaptor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it's on you to convince us this is the best choice by presenting us with as much information as you possibly can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... uh, this is terribly inappropriate timing, but should I get you anything to drink or eat, Sadde?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I'm cool, I wanna drag information from this bear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a bear, I'm the guardian beast of the seal!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, so how do we capture cards? Both with and without being a cardcaptor? Also, is it possible to stop being a cardcaptor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The light disappears from the lock. "The way to capture the Cards is by keeping them still long enough to command them to return to their Card form. The cardcaptor finds this easier and doesn't need other magic to do it, they can just use the cardcaptor staff. And you can't stop being a cardcaptor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cardcaptor staff? Also, can people collaborate to capture a card?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. The one who makes the Card reveal its true form will be the one the Card will go to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant, what is the cardcaptor staff and how does it work? Can cards be traded, given or stolen? I mean, in the sense that the person would be able to use them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The staff is the seal that binds the contract and turns you into a cardcaptor. You can give someone a Card, but if the Card is truly yours it can't be stolen, it will always return."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, so it is a staff +5 of card slaying. Can it break? Or run out of charge? Or does it consume mana? What makes a card truly someone's? Can a card belong to two people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The staff can't break and it doesn't have a charge. It's just there to help. For a Card to be yours you capture it and write your name on it and become friends with it. Cards can only belong to one person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh." Temple examines one of the cards. "Will they stop working if I write my name with a pencil and then erase it with an eraser? I mean, how resistant are those things? Could I use a sticker or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can only erase your name if you really mean to give the Card up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, but that is only half the question. Are the cards hard to erase or tear?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, they can only be destroyed by magic, and only very strong magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, convenient. What did you mean with they always return to me if I own them? Also, does this mean I could do something like lend one for a pre-specified time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could lend it indefinitely, if you told the Card you were lending it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You said he had to keep the Card still for long enough. How does that work? I mean, how do you keep, like, fire still or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...um. I—it's the job of the cardcaptor to figure this out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Splendid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magic?" Temple thinks out loud. "Other cards? Actually, how much do you know about the cards?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, how much do you know about the fire card? Is it vulnerable to water or cold? Or maybe lack of oxygen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, all of those things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is wind capable of removing the oxygen from the surrounding air? Or surrounding the fire with a gas we provide?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, the only Cards as powerful as fire are the other elements."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay... And I think we got off track by this line of questioning and should figure out more actual cardcaptor stuff instead of card capturing stuff. Do you have any idea of how much the cardcaptor contract affects the other kinds of magic and the benefits? I mean, usually when I cast my own flight spell it lasts like 8 minutes, would becoming a cardcaptor shaving that down to 7 minutes or 10 seconds or what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wouldn't change anything about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Than what would change?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How easy it is to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In what sense? Would my energy reserve end up lower and I wouldn't be able to cast it as often or the act of casting would require more concentration? Something else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, you won't be able to cast it as often."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any idea how less often? So far it sounds like someone should be the cardcaptor if only because of the benefits of the staff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know. It also makes Cards more powerful when you use them and you can use them better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any idea how much better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Its okay." Temple reassures. "So, how pressing is this? Are the cards likely to cause the world's destruction in a matter of hours or years?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Months?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And then what happens?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then the world will be destroyed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he means it's a continuous process."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I also wanted to know how they are going to destroy the world and... what class of destruction it will be? Are we talking about all humans dead or the planet shattered to pieces or what else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"All of those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are these Cards that powerful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They get more powerful the longer they're active."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, fuck. Only one person can become a cardcaptor? Is there... a possibility of sucession in case the previous one dies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would that be hard to set up in advance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes? It can't be set up in advance, the book and the key of the seal will know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Know what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who's worthy to become the next cardcaptor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What... what does worthy mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really know. Whoever Clow thought would be a good master."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... Were there previous cardcaptors that you know of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. You would be the first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great, no previous voices of experience for my quest to save the world," Temple says with too much levity for the situation. "Oh, wait. Were there other magic users? Do you know how to contact them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are many sorcerer clans, but I haven't left the book in more than a hundred years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"God, why? Were you trapped in there or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I just said, I'm the guardian beast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you don't get bored or anything?"

Still, to Temple this sounds like a nightmarish existence. He is strongly considering that Clow must have been evil.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why would I get bored? I was guarding the Cards."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple will quietly file the notion this poor living plushy has Stockholm syndrome or is the victim of brainwashing. Or just the plain trauma of being trapped for a century. Poor Cerberus.

"Okay... you said the book and the key would know who was worthy to be a cardcaptor... Is there a way to use that to test for potential cardcaptors?" He points at Sadde. "Is he worthy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It already decided on you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple facepalms. "Oh, shit."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde pats Temple's shoulder. "Is there anything else we should know about this cardcaptor business?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I just get over with it?" Temple asks no one in particular.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine. Okay, Cerberus. What do I have to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The small sphere of blue light reappears inside the lock and floats out, revealing the small key. "Key of the Seal, there is someone wishing for a contract with you. A boy! His name is Temple. O, Key, grant him the power. RELEASE!"

His surroundings are replaced by a black void, the only things present being himself, Cerberus, the Key, Sadde, and a glowing circle much like the one on the back of the Clow Cards where the "ground" should be. A strong wind starts pressing against Temple as the Key starts glowing again, almost too bright to look at.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple tries his best to not look away. Is he supposed to reach for the Key or something? Temple reaches for the Key.

(He will make the anime comparisons in the back of his head.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The Key grows and changes shape, becoming a staff.

"Now, Temple! Grab it!"

The wind is stronger, coming from the magical floating staff in the middle of the circle, working against Temple's attempt at doing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

What the duck, he mouths.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple fights against the wind and succeeds. He grabs the staff and holds it tightly.

(He isn't looking at Sadde, but he would agree with the sentiment.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The wind stops. Temple's room is back. The magic is gone. He is holding a pink staff. "Yes! You are now a cardcaptor!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yay."

Most. Unmotivated. "Yay". Ever.

"So, what now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I now have this fetching pink staff to capture cards. How do I use it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. You have to want it to become a key for it to become a key, and to say 'The Key which hides the powers of the Dark, show your true powers before me. I, Temple, command you under our contract. Release!' to turn it back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How very wordy. How does he find Cards?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When a Card becomes active he can meditate to find it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Meditate? Can't I just use the compass spell for that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Compass spell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I invented it yesterday and that is how we found the book."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might work... But you still should meditate to connect with the Cards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does connecting with the cards do? Also, can the key be stolen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need to have a good relationship with them. The key can be stolen, but it will only work for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they people? Did I just sign up for slave owner ship to save the world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they have feelings and desires and memories and a personality and preferences about their own state and existence and things that happen to them..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple facepalms again. "Anyway can I make the experience of being less horrifying to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most people don't like the idea of being trapped and being used by others as tools... granted, most people also wouldn't want to stay inside a book. What kinds of things do the cards want? And why a book by the way? A box would've worked just fine, no need to cut holes in the paper."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It depends on the Card. They want to be useful and cared for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... Do you know that for individual cards? How do I take care of them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really. They could tell you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I need to meditate for that? Flower didn't or couldn't talk, but was responsive to questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, you'll understand how to communicate with them better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is some magical meditation, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does the magical meditation work, how long does it take?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need to relax and focus on your magic and the Cards, and it takes as long as you want it to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, it sounds like getting into the proper mindset would take some time. And before doing that it would be a good idea to ask more questions... like, we got some cards already. What could you tell us about them?"

Temple holds ups his cards: The Windy, The Flower, The Glow, The Jump, and The Twin. Presumably Sadde will do the same with The Change, The Shield and The Through.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Windy's nice and one of the most powerful of Cards. She's usually very kind and gentle and likes helping."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple shows The Flower next.

Permalink Mark Unread

He continues going down the list. Flower's pretty chill, she likes dancing and having fun and making pretty things. Glow's the same, they're friends. Jump likes exercise, if Temple uses it a lot it'll be happy. The Twin is mischievous and likes playing pranks, but doesn't really care much about being used and will just sit there contentedly. Change wants to change stuff! In general! It really likes doing that. Shield doesn't have much in the way of a personality or desires. Through is also mischievous and would like to play pranks more often than Twin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is Change as comprehensive as the name implies? Can it be used to change things permanently? Turn base metals into gold?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can change a lot of stuff, and gets more powerful as you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes okay but it's mine neener neener."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw Sadde, of course it is, but...." Temple gives him exaggerated puppy dog eyes, "wouldn't you want to change some junk to fund the cause of saving the world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...sure, alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yay!" Temple hugs him. "Just remember, if there is no world, you can't conquer it. We probably should check the full capabilities of each card we already have. Maybe not inside my living room, or not all of them. What does The Twin do exactly? Does it turn me into a copy of someone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it creates very close copies of things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Niiiice. Are those permanent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They can be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, okay, but is that the kind of thing we have to work on to get better? Or we already start making permanent things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's permanent if you leave it changed for more than twenty-four hours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Same for the twin? Can you make cumulative changes then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could I make a permanent copy of something by leaving it around for 24 hours? Could I use The Change to change something then come back a day later and change it again so I have a twice-changed object?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure how Twin works, like that, but yes you can change something twice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would Twin know if they work like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I kinda want to try both ways. Sadde, do you think I'm forgetting something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"About Twin and Change?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cards in general. I want to try talking with each one of them like we did with Flower."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh you're definitely forgetting stuff. Does this cost mana? How much? What's Flower's rate of matter creation per minute? How sturdy is Shield? Can Windy be used for flight? How strong and precise is it? That's only what just occurred to me, mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those are all things that we should find out, but not exactly what I had in mind for the moment. Well, the mana cost is relevant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't cost anything but it gets more powerful when you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did you have in mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, generally get to know each other on a more personal level? Cerberus's descriptions helped, but it would be nicer talk to them myself in case he is incorrect or not specific enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose, but if that looks like meditation then I'm gonna be bored out of my mind, here. Or I guess I could interrogate Cerberus—what a mouthful—while you do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was going to start with talking with them... manifest, like Flower was earlier, better to start with that than meditation. You could read my notes on magic while I do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Flower didn't seem very forthcoming but alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, before I wasn't thinking in terms of 'making friends because we have a world to save'." Temple says. "I kinda hope to minimize the disconfort they would feel while we use them for that."

He shows Sadde's the file with his notes, ideas and results on magic. Sadde can't say Temple lacked ideas, but they're all over the place, there are several dozens of experiments that he thought about but just didn't perform. One could assume he got distracted by doing an experimenting and then thinking of new experiments to do based on the results and the list got progressively longer.

After leaving Sadde at the computer, Temple summons Flower, activating the card with the staff as per Cerberus's instructions. "Flower! Please come forth so we can talk!"

Permalink Mark Unread

There she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, Flower! Cerberus explained some things and apparently we have to save the world. I am not sure yet how you can help, but are you okay with helping?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and curtsies.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you! I promise to be nice as best I can to you! Cerberus said you like fun and pretty things, is that correct?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and twirls, making a few rose petals appear out of thin air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple giggles. "This is so cool. Can you make me a flower crown? Something with blue petals and no thorns?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes she can! There it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is delighted with his flower crown.

"Thank you, Flower! I will get Glow next."

Can Temple keep both The Flower and The Glow up at same time? If not he will say "see you soon!" to Flower and summon Glow alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can!

The Glow is really small. It is about the size of his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaaw. "Hello, glow! I'm Temple and apparently I need to save the world, would you like to help with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're neutral about that? Can I still get your help anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you! I promise to be nice either way."

He will try Jump next, and if he can't keep three cards active he will try Jump and Windy or just Jump if those two fail.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jump is a pink rabbit thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple introduces himself again and asks for help in saving the world, and promises getting Jump the thing it wants regardless of the world saving business.

Permalink Mark Unread

It scratches an ear with a hind paw.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you understand me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It twitches its nose and looks around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I will try figure out how much of a rabbit you are later. But I hope you understood I'm friendly."

Dismiss, Jump. Windy is next. Similar introduction.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and bows.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, I don't know if you tried to get the cards away from me because you were scared, but I will try my best to be nice to each one of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

She continues smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... I hope this means we are cool?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, thank you!"

The Twin is next. Introduction happens and Temple asks "Am I supposed to address you as two people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They shrug simultaneously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I will try to be nice to you and the other cards. Cerberus said you sort of like pranks, but the world might end soon so I don't know if we will have time for magical pranks until after the world is saved. But you are likely to be useful in the meanwhile, I hope that is okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

They shrug again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, thank you for listening."

Well, those are all the cards he got, the rest are with Sadde. This is a good time to see what Cerberus and Sadde are doing.

He is, of course, still wearing the flower crown.

"Hey, guys?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde has just spent the past few minutes interrogating Cerberus—whom he now calls Kero.

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking with the cards was interesting. They are oddly cute. How are things on your end?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got a list of Cards! They're weird and betimes useless but mostly really cool. Why adorable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple tells him how the conversations went and how The Glow is basically Tinkerbell and The Jump is basically a pink rabbit. He also takes a look at the list of cards.

"Weird that there is The Arrow and The Shot. Unless it is somehow related to how there is Cloud, Rain and Storm?" Temple asks Kero.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They work differently. The Arrow shoots many arrows at the same time, The Shot is only one at a time and it's not arrows."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Sadde, do you mind lending me your cards for a talk? Then I will meditate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." Here they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, are you planning to help me with the world saving and are you aiming to treat the cards well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course I wanna save the world, and I wouldn't hurt the Cards if they don't wanna be hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just want confirmation before talking to them, although maybe you should be the one to do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't need to keep the other two if it messes up your cardcaptor thing going on, I just really want Change."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I did want Shield for the obvious reasons, but we shouldn't be rigid about who uses the cards, at least not before we figure out how we work on the field."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah sure. This isn't an instructions manual with an explanatory NPC but it's close, we'll probably learn a lot of magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kero, could you say 'hey listen!'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Its a joke. I will explain later-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh my god!!!" Temple shouts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? What's wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't even told mom about magic yet! And I got into the world-saving quest!"

If this was an anime this would be the scene where Temple's desperate cries would be heard from the outside, possible disturbing some birds to fly off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well now you got a brand new reason to tell her!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is not like it makes telling any easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't get why it should be hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really can't appreciate the difference between telling someone 'yay, magic exists' and 'magic exists and I doomed the world'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, I guess, but that doesn't seem like it'd make it harder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not the actual process of just saying the words, but you have to take into account the emotional impact they have. With just the magic I could tell the news and then we could cast a flight spell and then we could fly around for a bit having fun, I don't think mom will be in the mood for flying after being told I've become The Chosen One that needs to save the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Well, nothing I can do about that for now. But anyway, the reason I remembered this was, Kero, you are going to live with us, right? What kind of things do you need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somewhere to sleep? Food is nice, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You eat?" Temple says eyeing Kero's plushie body up and down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't look very... biological. Are you made of meat and bones like animals are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My true form is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you... okay like this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's annoying and less powerful but when you capture enough Cards I'll get my true form back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's it look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a powerful winged lion!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How many cards? And that does sounds like a cool form, but why a winged lion?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Why are you a human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very complicated biological processes. I was under the impression you were created by magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you remember that happening? Were you created as an adult at full power or did you start young and less powerful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was created like I am, but in my true form."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And... and I got distracted. Do you think you can sleep on a pillow? Do you need a lot of shade or covers? What sorts of things do you eat and how much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't need a pillow but it's nice, I can eat everything but I like sweet things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about privacy? Shade? Do you know how to read? Ooooh, I should teach you how to use the computer so you can navigate the internet!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't mind those things, I can read, what's the internet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is the most recent human technology you were acquainted with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I dunno, I didn't keep track."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you familiar with television? Telephones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've heard of telephones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, humans created machines called computers that can do a lot of things related to pre-programmed information. One of the things is that the machines can form a network so they can share information, that is the gist of the internet. And it allows people to seek information they would need to go the library for, send messages without bothering the mailman, look at pictures of cute baby animals and other things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. That sounds really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is! Anyway, I will talk to Through and then try talk to Shield."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I will continue grilling the bear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a guardian beast..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be nice to the guardian beast."

Temple then goes back to the living room and summons Through.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is summoned. It grins at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I'm Temple and I need to save the world and would like your help if that is okay. Kero said you like pranks, and I will try to think of some that are funny and safe to try, but even if I don't I will try my best to treat you and the other cards nicely. Is that alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It shrugs and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, Shield's turn. Does it show up as the shield in the card? "Hello? Can you understand me? Move up and down for 'yes' and left and right for 'no'."

Permalink Mark Unread

It shows up but does not move.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, in case you can understand but not communicate..." Temple explains what is going on about the end of the world and etc.

He summons Change. Does it behave animal-like?

Permalink Mark Unread

Very.

Permalink Mark Unread

Same spiel as Shield then.

Now he gets back to Kero, "Hey, so how is the meditation supposed to work? Do I have to sit in a lotus position or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, you just have to get really calm and focus on your magic. If you're surrounded by the cards and have the staff on your lap it helps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," Temple arranges the cards around him and holds the staff on his lap. Confirms if this is the correct set up and calms himself.

Does it help to "focus on your magic", if Temple focus vaguely where that "tug" comes from?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well he'll need some time to figure that out, probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably, so Temple tries that for awhile.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first thing he notices is light.

Not real light but something like light. It's coming from where Sadde and Kero are.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooh. Can he take a "closer" look?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnot really, no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can he tell the two apart? Can he sense the cards?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can! They feel similar but not too much.

After a bit he can also sense the Cards but—not as cards. As their avatars, or even more, as what they really are, distilled magic, the very representation of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooooh, this exciting. What can he tell about individual cards?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not much yet! And then the more he waits, the more he can. It becomes clearer and clearer that while even Cards as simple as Shield have a basic underlying "personality," it's nothing like human. There are layers upon layers of magic and meaning behind each of them, and they're much bigger than they look.

(And Kero is shiny. Really shiny. Like, much more than Sadde.)

Permalink Mark Unread

What do the layers reveal about the cards? Do Kero or Sadde have layers?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kero and Sadde do not have layers. As for the Cards... it's hard to determine what the layers mean. Some are personality or intent, something about what the Card wants. But others are more abstract and less readily obvious—and shared between some Cards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which cards share things? What do the shared things look like?

Permalink Mark Unread

Windy and Jump share a thing, and Change shares a third thing with both of them. Shield, Through, Twin, Flower, and Glow all share things as well, but Through and Twin share a thing that Glow, Shield, and Flower don't have, and Shield and Flower share another thing, too. Through and Shield share a thing, and Change, Twin, and Glow a different thing.

As for what the shared things look like: themselves, pretty much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple notes all those things and tries to get more. This is interesting. Can he sense further than this room?

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe! If there were other magical things there!

Permalink Mark Unread

Can Temple keep trying expanding his magic sense?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can! Doesn't seem to help much past a certain point, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple tries to push further, notices the lack of result and finally decides to drop out of the meditation and tell the results to Kero and Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll learn to understand it better with practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any idea what the different layers represent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Types of magic, maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are types?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, one of the groups he mentioned was Sun Cards and Moon Cards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you mean with sun and moon? What are the other types?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know all the types... I know the Clow Cards are organized under the Sun and the Moon, and the four elements and light and dark."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Why are Sun and light different categories? Can you tell us individual cards categories?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Light, Firey, and Earthy are all under the Sun, while Dark, Windy, and Watery are under the Moon. And the Cards are divided within a hierarchy—the elements, the Light, and the Dark are the most powerful Cards and every other Card is under one of them..."

He lists where each Card belongs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple writes that all that down.

"Some of these are funny, I would expect Through to be under Dark. But as a whole you can get a sense of... logic? Or aesthetic? The Twin under Fire is weird unless it's supposed to be about creation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, does this also work for spells? Sadde, do you wanna do magic experiments?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You betcha."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure?" Temple thinks over the cards they do have... "Any specific ones we should start with? I kinda want to see how easily we can exploit Twin for fun and profit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if it can duplicate things permanently we could try sell them. Or maybe they can duplicate scrolls without extra mana cost. There ought to be some use of duplicating things, even temporarily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, yes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, wanna try the duplicated scroll hack? I guess it might just cost the regular value of the scroll or even more, but just the time-saving it could provide!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's do it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple writes a TFWS scroll, then he uses the card "Twin, I ask you to duplicate this scroll and the magic within!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They look at it, then at Temple, and tilt their heads in unison.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't duplicate the magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They shake their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is okay, guys. Can you copy just the scroll minus the magic as it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They nod and boop the scroll.

A double appears right by it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks? Is this permanent?" Temple inspects the two scrolls.

Permalink Mark Unread

They tilt their heads to both sides in a "more-or-less" gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

The synchronized movements are so cute. "Can you make it permanent?" He pauses between questions giving them time to answer. "If I dismiss you will this go away?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They shake their heads to both things.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you dismiss this later if I ask?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. Sadde, I will try make this into a scroll."

Does it work?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Too bad.

He writes down on the duplicated paper with ink and deposits that paper on top of a clean sheet. "Okay, guys, I want you to dismiss that paper now." What happens to the ink?

Permalink Mark Unread

Disappears with!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, this is horryfing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ask them to bring that same paper again...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple asks that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They do!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, this is still pretty scary, but well... less so. Do you have any specific tests in mind? I was thinking duplicating things minus specific parts and see their limits on volume, mass and number of copies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, I actually have lots of ideas popping up in my brain for testing, can you get me some pen and paper? I should write them all down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. We should check: if copied non-scrolls can be turned into scrolls; if copied ink can make things vanish; if we can be selective about the vanishment and if so, how much; if vanished things show sign of being elsewhere; at what point two things become one enough to vanish together."

Temple provides pen and paper.

Permalink Mark Unread

He writes this down and starts writing down some other tests that pop up in his mind, mentioning them aloud as he does.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can produce and then perform tests for a long time. Will Temple's guest want snacks eventually?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not unless he's reminded of them and his host wants to eat, himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool. Temple will bring something. Does Kero want some as well?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes!!!!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple brings chocolate cookies and tea, he offers Kero coke if the guardian beast thinks he can drink it without getting sick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course he can! Nommmmm! Ssslurp!

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is suddenly distracted by the amount of food Kero can consume, does he even have a stomach? Lungs? Does he burp?

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not sure how he's biologically arranged but he does burp.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a brief internal debate Temple decides he will think of an X-ray spell later. They're still doing magical testing with the cards. Oooh, look, let's try making extinct flowers.

How long will Sadde stay?

Permalink Mark Unread

Until it starts getting dark, then it's time to go home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple says farewell and resumes performing magic experiments.

Eventually, he remembers that homework is a thing and does that too.

Later Temple's mom arrives and he is there to greet her. Does Kero want to be part of this conversation?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Kero is good nice evidence that magic is real.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple greets her and goes straight to the point: "Mom, I have to tell you something." Pause. "Magic is real."

He waves at Kero, who will hopefully introduce himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! I am Cerberus, Guardian Beast of the Clow Cards!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple's mom looks between the two and then grabs Temple's by the wrist. "They founds us! We have to run!" She says while trying to drag Temple by the door.

"Wait, what?" Temple asks resisting the pull.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your father's clan found us! We have to run!" She says.

"My father's what?" Temple is shocked enough to be taken outside, but then he says, "No, wait. What?"

"I can explain it on the way."

"No, this isn't dad's. I mean. I don't think it is."

This gives her pause. "Then where is it from?"

Temple explains, his mother listens.

They both come back inside and Temple's mom approaches Kero. "Hello, I'm Patience. So, the world might end?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And my son is the only one that can stop it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And this isn't some elaborate plot by Temple's father's clan to capture us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clow Reed wasn't part of any clan!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not what I asked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mom, hold on. You have to explain that one better."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs. "Your dad was part of a Sorcerers' Clan, I actually didn't know much about it, he only told me the day he left. Apparently they don't marry outsiders and were furious that we got involved. They didn't knew about you yet, if they did they would use you for your magic. So me and your dad had to part ways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh my god."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've known about magic this entire time and you never told me!?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clow Reed's parents were also disowned from their clans, but they never tried to use his magic..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clow Reed is the person that created the cards? And what do you mean by never?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well they just didn't want to see Clow's parents ever again, or Clow himself. Even after he became the most powerful sorcerer in the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, lucky him, Stephen's clan would drain out as much magic as they could from my son if they could get their hands on him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"—I don't think sorcerers can do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, maybe by charging up a scroll until you run out of mana?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess... I'm not sure how sorcery works, really, that could be it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are those kinds of things common?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I wouldn't know." She looks at Kero. "I guess you wouldn't know if Stephen's clan would be able to find us now, would you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What kinds of things? And not really, sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorcerer clans being terrible to people? Sounds like it could get horrible really fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... don't think I've ever heard of that? Clow was friends with lots of clans, they liked using the things he used to make."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you noticed kids charging up scrolls all day or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, but I didn't visit many clans, and Clow died very soon after he created us, only ten or twenty years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, this is terrible, but doesn't really answer how we can stop them from find us. I only have one ring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right." Patience removes a ring from her little finger... it was hard to notice until she did that, then she puts it on again, and it is there, but hard to stare at. "It prevents me from being found magically as long I don't use any magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that explains it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, is this cardcaptor business conducive to skipping town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, most of the Cards will appear nearby..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know if the cards are good if the clan does come? I moved even though Stephen said it wasn't necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can they be used for defense against other sorcerers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Yes, they are very powerful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Well, not good." Sigh. "Well, thank you for your help, Kero."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's alright. I'm sorry this happened to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not your fault, but thank you. I guess there is no point moving until the cards are dealt with, but we can be prepared to at least leave this house if it comes to that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, one of the cards I managed to keep duplicates things. We could make copies to sell, or even copy all of our furniture and put somewhere else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The copies the Twin makes are always a little bit different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, as long the object function or we can borrow Sadde's Change to..." and then there is a discussion on how to optimize card use for fun, profit and strategy.

The discussion runs late enough that it is too late to send a message about it, but the next day he sends:

Hey, Sadde. It turns out that not only I'm the chosen one meant to save the world, but my dad had to leave me to protect us from his awful family. I'm starting to suspect I'm the protagonist of this story. Are you satisfied with the role of sidekick?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course not, you're the romantic interest who gets kidnapped and must be rescued in Act 3. Also I'm curious about what the heck you mean.

Permalink Mark Unread

I'm sorry, but who has the pink staff of power? This guy. And... Temple summarizes the thing about his dad being from a magic clan and his mom keeping it a secret. As you see my tragic backstory is way more tragic, because I could've known about magic this whole time and didn't!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well fine then I'll be the sidekick everyone in the audience roots for and who gets more and more screen time until they get their spin-off show.

Permalink Mark Unread

That works! I was thinking that after the cards are captured there would be an epilogue and you would be super successful or something. While I'm on some other vaguely described magical journey or something. What will your spin-off show be about?

Permalink Mark Unread

Me taking over the world and becoming a benevolent dictator, hadn't we discussed this already?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, right. I advise you to add a lot of interesting relationships and character trauma, maaaaybe some interdimensional travel.

Permalink Mark Unread

My job is preventing trauma! The relationships and other dimensions are cool, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, skip the trauma, that is the way of getting your spin-off cancelled!

Permalink Mark Unread

You don't need trauma to have a lot of audience! Sex is enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. I didn't know it was that kind of show. That indeed would keep the audience's numbers up.

Permalink Mark Unread

It would also keep some other parts of the audience up.

Permalink Mark Unread

I guess it would! So many things up with the Sex-Adventures of The Benevolent Dictator of the Multiverse (tm).

Permalink Mark Unread

It wouldn't be that focused on sex! Just, you know, HBO levels of sex-focused.

Permalink Mark Unread

As long you're equal opportunity about that focus, that sounds like a great idea for your spin-off. :)

Shortly, he sends a second message.

Oh, forgot to say. Mom and I will stay until the cards are captured, but we might move afterwards (not sure yet, but :( ). Are you and your mom going to plan something like that?

Permalink Mark Unread

I don't think so? I'm pretty sure my father is not in any way shape or form looking for me, and besides, after we capture all these world-ending cards we should be more than powerful enough to fend off evil sorcerers, yes?

Permalink Mark Unread

I mean, in case they wanted to capture you to continuously drain the energy out of you so I have to rescue you in Act 3. But I agree. I think we can even use the cards as guards when we sleep if it comes to that. Mom is still reluctant to use magic in case it calls their attention to us.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eh, my response to magic enemies is using more magic, I think.

Permalink Mark Unread

I think she is just not used to the idea. Dad got her this magic ring that hides her presence from magic detection as long she isn't actively using magic and he didn't explain it in detail at the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

I tried getting my mom to use some magic but she couldn't so I think she's just really not magical at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mine is. if she is not wearing the ring and I use magic detection she totally lights up. I wonder if it is like harry potter and there are muggleborns and the like, maybe you and mom are that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, the way my father reacted when I did magic for the first time, I'm pretty sure he wasn't magical, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, my mom and I didn't realize we were magical that early. Dad was the one that told her actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

I kinda want to find your dad now, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

You're telling me that? But apparently he specifically told her not to try to find him again for our own sake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, well, I'm reckless.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that is a sound, well-reasoned and compelling argument to do a dangerous thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

We can capture some more cards first! Maybe one or two elements. Then we go kick their butts and take names.

Permalink Mark Unread

<3 I love your style. And we can get better at non-card magic too! we could get a ton of versatility with preparation. Maybe we can do something that suppreses magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Suppresses? Like your mom's ring?

Permalink Mark Unread

I think her ring hides. But something to the effect of "haha, you can't use your sweet magic, but we can, because the cards are better!"

But the clan might not be in town.

Permalink Mark Unread

You said your mom moved, it's probably wherever she moved from.

Permalink Mark Unread

We moved twice that I know of (one to town and one across town) and when she realized what I was doing she stopped talking about it. I know where we used to live and it's quite a walk, but going there would be a good place to start. We should test how far the detection and the compass spells go.

Permalink Mark Unread

We probably should, yeah. This weekend?

Permalink Mark Unread

To test the spells? Or poke the magic hornet nest? I think we should at least figure if it's in town and where.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, let's find the hornet nest.

Permalink Mark Unread

And not poking it until we have a plan to actually rescue my dad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right. That. No poking until powerful.

Permalink Mark Unread

How did your mom react to the news?

Permalink Mark Unread

What news? End of the world?

Permalink Mark Unread

Magic cards. End of the world. You met someone that has better claim to be the story's protagonist. All of the above.

Permalink Mark Unread

She was—pretty miffed that it took this long for a clue to appear, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where did you search for clues? I was trying to remember if I ever did magic while a kid and still young enough to think that it could work, but maybe I never said an incantation that was correct. Damn you, Potter, my father will hear about this!

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles out loud.

Libraries, mostly, and forums, and various esoteric groups.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do you think you would've tried the book's scientific experiment if you had run into it? It is such a great way to suss out muggleborns that I want to investigate the author at some point.

Permalink Mark Unread

What scientific experiment?

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple describes the experiment. I think it is the perfect way to get the message out there, because of the perfect plausible deniability. I'm honestly unsure if it is more or less likely that the author is a sorcerer or not.

Permalink Mark Unread

I probably would have, knowing that magic is really real. And I think we should look for the author.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. We should. Aaaand I just realized that "Alex B. Wise" is a unisex name and I don't remember any picture of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Google?

Permalink Mark Unread

He replies some time later.

Only references about them and their books. Wikipedia doesn't have an article about them, only about the book series. Found an interview to a magazine, but no photos that are officially the books' author (there is a model with the same name but he is too young).

Permalink Mark Unread

What's the interview say?

Permalink Mark Unread

That takes a bit longer to reply.

The author doesn't talk about themself at all, none of the interviewer questions are about their personal life either. Is this suspicious? They only talk about the books. I will send the link.

The link is sent in a second message. Questions 3, 8 and 9 are major spoilers and I don't think they have hidden messages or anything.

Then a third message: ALEX BE WISE?!

Permalink Mark Unread

You're right, this is useless, and yes what about it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like a pen name. And maybe it is a way of saying "you be careful" to whoever reads this and can do magic? Am I being paranoid or seeing patterns?

Permalink Mark Unread

You are probably being paranoid and seeing patterns, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

:( Sigh. Why can't magical conspiracies be easy and straigthforward to unveil?

Permalink Mark Unread

Because otherwise the show would end before episode three.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right! We need multiple plot lines! So we can end each episode with a twist. I don't want to be in a show that ends their episodes with a silly joke.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do we? What other plot line do you want?

Permalink Mark Unread

Currently we have: The danger of the cards. My father and his clan. The mystery of the book's author. We should've gone to the same school and gotten a pair of muggle friends. Then there could be all sorts of friendship and romance related plot lines that overlap with dealing with Evil Jocks and Cheerleaders (tm).

Permalink Mark Unread

Let's not.

Permalink Mark Unread

We are actually considering taking me out of school, but that's on hold until the cards are dealt with.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is really a lot of paranoia.

Permalink Mark Unread

No? It would be so I could focus on card hunting without being worried about failing in math class or something. The end of the world outweighs an F, you know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah. Makes sense. I mean I'd probably just not worry.

Permalink Mark Unread

There was also the concern of not being able to leave school. And I can probably use magic to teach somehow if that is ever a concern.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teach?

Permalink Mark Unread

That was a typo, I meant teach me*. I guess I could just straightforwardly cheat, but that would be ~*wrong*~ because you're supposed to save the world and not cheat on your test scores even if it will make world saving easier.

Permalink Mark Unread

*raspberry*

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheating is wrong! Stay in school kids! ;)

But really, I'm probably just going to make a living off magic. I would've even if The Twins hadn't been with me.

Permalink Mark Unread

Magic other people don't know about is like the insider information of the market of life.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ow. Now I'm wondering if that is why magic is a secret. Secret capitalist sorcerer conspiracy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wouldn't surprise me, it's a big advantage. I figure we use it as best we can then make the world a better place with it or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Magical altruism! The best kind! :)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! But anyway I should get ready for school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Me too! Good luck at school!
