"There's fire, lots of it, but nobody gets tortured in it, and we don't filter for sinners. Your turn: what even are you?"
"I'm from the Other Place. It's hard to describe in human words, but it's beautiful. We aren't discrete beings there, we have no physical form and the lines between individuals are blurred. A long time ago humans discovered how to name us and trap us in this world."
"Which is done quite without your consent and is unpleasant?"
"Of course it's without our consent. This world hurts, shifting between forms helps the pain, but the longer we stay here the worse it gets. If we stay here too long we die. Do your kind serve humans willingly?"
"Yeah, nobody get summoned who doesn't want to be, it's a trade kind of deal. Plenty of daeva just hang out and never take summons."
Alex shakes his head, "I don't know a single demon who would ever come to this world if given the choice. Though that does explain why you let the magician live."
"If I killed her I'd pop back to Hell, anyway, and I don't usually get to wander the mortal world unbound, even if this is clearly not my usual mortal world."
"Will you kill her when you are finished here?"
"I wasn't super planning on it. Like, I feel for your situation, but am I correct in thinking there's more than one summoner - pardon, magician?"
Alex closes his eyes and gives a sharp nod, "Hundreds of them. I'm fortunate in that my name is not widely known. When she dies I may have several dozen years of peace. But eventually, I will be summoned again."
"So, clearly, what I should do is put our mutual summoner-magician in a coma, then address the rest of the problem. Will that inconvenience you? Her being in a coma? Does she need to give you formal permission to go home or something?"
"I can't go home without her permission unless she's dead, but it will likely be months before she lets me go home. Can you put her in a coma?"
"Yeah, easily. But if that traps you here I'm open to other suggestions."
"Would it be permanent?"
"The coma? I could get her out of it any time. I'd suggest finding another, less evil human to summon me instead, so I can casually threaten this one with death if she doesn't let you go home, but I have no idea how I wound up in the wrong world to begin with and don't know if it'd even work."
"Put her in a coma. Please."
"Sure. Where'd she go?"
"Likely to her study. It's down the hall, third door on the right. I'll have to stop you if I go with you."
"Stop me how?"
"Right now I'd try to grab you or trip you, but if she ordered me to actually hurt you I'd have no choice."
"...Just so I'm not walking around in constant background fear of this, can you attempt to do me some small fixable harm so we can see if that is something you can accomplish or not?"
Alex opens his hand and a small flame appears above his palm, "I'm going to throw this at you."
"Yeah, just get me in the leg or something."
Alex tosses it at Cam's right knee.
"Okay, I'm probably good. But there's no reason for you to accompany me anyway."
Cam goes looking for the magician in her study.
