The dying chords are struck anew
Storms and Tyrians continue to exist in Nemeton

Melissa is not fond of parent-teacher night. Scott is a decent student, but his teachers always have something to say about how he's too quiet in class, or how he's too talkative, if he shares it with Stiles. She's glad those boys have each other, but it's more stress than she likes to have after work. They expect her to have something to say to all their comments, like she'll thank them for the advice and incorporate it into her parenting. Well, she's done enough parenting. Her kid can handle himself, and she'll be there to support him when he can't.

She's leaving the English teacher's passive-aggressive rant when she bumps into him.

"Oh, excuse me. Sorry about that, I can barely get myself from point A to point B."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No need to be sorry. Beautiful woman like you, I should be thanking you." Beat. "Or maybe sending you my dry cleaning bill, I haven't decided."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Anything I can do to help with that?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Save me from the monotony of the history teacher? The amount he drones, no wonder they're falling asleep in their seats. Or maybe that's just my kid."

Permalink Mark Unread

Your kid? I’d love to try your moisturizer.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"My niece, truly. But I have been the favourite and doting uncle her whole life. Her mother tragically passed away in childbirth, so I've been helping out where I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m sorry. That’s really good of you. Which one is she?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet Salvatore. Have you had the pleasure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Afraid not. Most students I’ve met were at work, and you probably don’t wish your niece had been in the hospital more often.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe if I had known they had such quality staff."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I didn’t know there were any charming, single men left in this town, so I guess we’re both surprised.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damon? How did you- what are you doing here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Obviously attending to my duties as one of our dear Juliet's guardians. I take them very seriously, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks between Melissa and Damon, skeptical and anxious. "You're here for Juliet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the networking opportunities with fellow guardians," he turns to Melissa, "This is Juliet's father, Zachary Salvatore."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Zachary, nice to meet you. You weren’t expecting him?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"...nice to meet you too, Ms. McCall." He turns to Damon, "When did you get into town? Where are you staying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"McCall. I know that name. Local family. Interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

“What have you heard, exactly?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Snagged up a prime piece of real estate right from under our Salvatore noses in the fifties. Keen bit of business sense, he had. Big family, so I supppse he learned quick."

He sounds a bit bitter.

Permalink Mark Unread

“On behalf of my ex-husband’s dead father, I have to give my sincerest apologies. The McCalls really did you wrong. I should be getting to gym class, wouldn’t want to miss that. Nice meeting you, Zachary.”

She waves at the Salvatores, and starts off towards the gym.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Salvatore men continue to have a hushed argument before Zach disengages and heads in the same direction as Melissa.

To the gym!

Permalink Mark Unread

"To give you all an idea of how your kids are doing in my class, we'll be playing a game. Everyone split into two teams."

Permalink Mark Unread

The only other parent she recognizes is Zachary.

She joins him.

"Any guesses on what we're playing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bobby was always very into dodgeball."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that'll give us some free time."

And indeed, when Coach Finstock demands that several adults play dodgeball, Melissa is one of the first ones out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zach lasts a little longer, he's obviously fit, but his lack of enthusiasm for hitting other people is his downfall.

He moves to stand next to her.

"I'd like to apologize for my cousin. He's.. an egomaniac, essentially."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He was charming, for all of five minutes. Does he normally show up unannounced?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's his modus operandi, he likes to make an entrance. Always has."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry you and your daughter have to deal with that. You handled it well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's strong and knows how to deal with him, better than me at any rate." He sounds proud. "Your son is Scott McCall, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's him. Why, what have you heard?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I remember him from when they were in pre-school together. Juliet had a crush on him for a while there." He laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot girls did. He liked to share. His teachers wanted to bottle that and give it to all their students. What's your daughter like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's... a handful. Just started regular school this year and she's already got a boyfriend and is sneaking out of the house. But. She's my world. I find it hard to find fault with anything she does."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort.

"I'm surprised they didn't stay friends. I wouldn't call Scott a handful, but I might say it about his best friend. He's always dragging him out in the middle of the night. Teenagers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was homeschooled not long after, had trouble making friends. Doesn't seem to have that problem now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I could homeschool my kid, even if I had the time. How did you make sure she was learning what she needed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hired the appropriate tutors. Even then it was difficult, she only ever had time for her art. Which hasn't changed according to her teachers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish Scott had that kind of focus. He does well in all his classes, but he doesn't have anything he's committed to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He has time. Kids tend to find themselves in high school. I know I changed a lot during."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you can't stop there. Was it the outfits? The hairstyle? The hobbies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I discovered Shakespeare and poetry and Cat Stevens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was a mess in high school. I'm glad we're meeting now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Coach Finstock loudly congratulates the winner for "proving that gym class is a valuable part of daily life".

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. I guess I'll see you around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Yes. Would you like to have dinner with me some time? I have no social skills, but I am an excellent cook. If you like Italian."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love Italian. How's Tuesday night sound?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent, yes. Do you know the Boarding House?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There aren't that many old houses on the edge of town. I'll be there at seven?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works. I'll look forward to it." He looks very pleased.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck with your...Damon. I'll see you then, Zachary."

Permalink Mark Unread

He waves her goodbye.

"I'll need more than luck."

And he leaves, keeping an eye out for any evil uncles.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next day, after her shift, Melissa stops by the Stilinski home.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to explain this unplanned visit, or am I making us coffee?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Coffee sounds amazing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You realize I had to bribe Stiles to take Scott out tonight? I'm going to have that guilt hanging over me for the rest of my life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh. So, yesterday I met this guy at school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suspect or victim?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a source of gossip, Melissa, I'm the Sheriff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We both know they're the same thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pours them both a cup and sits.

"Fine. Who do you want to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zachary Salvatore, father of Juliet Salvatore. What have you got?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not giving you anything on criminal history. At a certain point, we cross the line into stalking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not even if I beg?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He lived here when we were kids. Went to school with me and Raf. He was an athlete. Kind of aloof. Some people thought he was cocky and arrogant, like he was too good for us. I didn't really think about it, honestly. The jocks were the jocks, and if you weren't, you mostly stayed away. He and Raf played together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't actually have to bring up my ex-husband when we're talking about my upcoming date, Noah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, sorry. He stopped hanging out with the jocks a little while before graduation. Everyone said it was a death in the family, or drugs- I figured it was rehab, but you know I don't like to gossip. Anyway, then he fucked off to college and stayed away until he came back to raise Juliet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know why he came back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one really knows. It's not my place to speculate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No rumors? Nothing coming down the grapevine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not your personal rumor mill, Melissa. Ask him."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sips her coffee.

"How's Stiles doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know how it is this time of the year. He's holding up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess there's really no good time of the year."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There really isn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sip.

"What happened to us, Noah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We were both looking for comfort. It was just the timing of it all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. I'll see you on Thursday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or the next time our boys get themselves in trouble. I should probably get Stiles before he does something I'll regret."

He leaves his coffee unfinished, and leads her to the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Monday happens and Juliet is on a Mission.

Find Scott McCall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott McCall appears to be in conversation with this boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right. The mouthy one.

She interupts. "So, Scott. Is your mom allergic to anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No? Why? I'm Scott."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got that, yes. That's good. And she likes Italian food just fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She loves Italian. My dad used to cook it all the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're Juliet Salvatore, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The one and only. That's really fortunate! My dad is awesome at Italian. He really likes to embrace our heritage like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's cool. I'm glad you like Italian food? Otherwise that could get awkward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Her dad is going on a date with your mom tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh- oh! Why did you know that? Um, yeah, Italian sounds good. He shouldn't worry about doing anything fancy, she'll be happy with anything as long as there's tomatoes somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know everything that happens in this town, Scotty. You guys talk it out, I'll see you later."

He walks off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tomatoes? I can work with that. I'll put it on the grocery list. He was thinking pizza, but I really don't think that's quite appropriate for a first date. He makes a good bolognese though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'd probably eat pizza, too. Most nights we have takeout. Do you know how they met?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well their lives revolve around us, so they obviously met at parent-teacher night last week. They bonded over dodgeball."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. I- that's good. Do you need anything from me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was kinda wondering if you wanted to hang out tomorrow. That way we can keep each other company while our parents do this date thing. You're on the lacrosse team with Matt, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. What did you want to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been bowling before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Were you thinking of inviting Matt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking it, but it could just be us if you want. Or you could bring some of your friends. I'm not fussy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could bring Stiles or Harley? Or maybe Danny, if he's not busy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles and/or Harley would be good. Maybe not Danny, we don't really get along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll ask the Sheriff if he can drive us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan. Are you allergic to anything? Maybe I'll bake something. I'm feeling bake-y."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll eat anything. Stiles, too. I think Harley doesn't eat pork, but I don't think there's a lot of pork baked goods."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a challenge, but maybe not one I'll take up now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't promise anyone else would eat those. We can pick you up at 6:30 and then get Matt and Harley on the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somebody will. Maybe Brian. He seems like he'd be too polite to refuse such an offer. 6:30 sounds great. I'll be long gone before your mom gets there, so I won't psych her or my dad out."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Okay. See you then.”

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at him and turns to continue with her day. Mission complete.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her day continues. At lunch, Lydia and Jackson wave her over.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at them and sits.

"Hey. My two favourite stalkers. Get any good dirt on me this weekend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Should we be trying harder?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I contain multitudes. I'm sure there's something you could find. Are you coming to my and Diaz' Halloween party? Maybe you'll find something there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like we'd miss a Diaz party. Brian, you coming?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see if I have room in my schedule. How's Matt doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. He should be around here somewhere. I think he likes to keep up a little mystery. Can't have me getting too familiar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's not very subtle. I haven't seen anyone fall so far, so fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are we looking at a long-term thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I'm much capable of anything but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We didn't have anything contingent on that, did we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you can rework whatever plan you might of had in my favor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We didn't, anyway, we're clear. How was your weekend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I found out my dad got his first date in fifteen years. You know Scott McCall? Apparently his mom is very dateable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which one is McCall?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure. Brian?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's on the bench."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's specific."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's the Latino kid with the fluffy hair, always hanging around Stilinski."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. This is a first date?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. I'm hoping it goes well, maybe it'll get him out of the house more. He's such a homebody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it doesn't work out, we can try my mom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah? What's she like then? Obviously beautiful, since she created you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Flattery will get you everywhere. She's prettier than me, a teacher, intelligent but incurious, sociable, and resistant to change."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She seems lovely. Dad is a huge lit nerd, so at least they'll have something to talk about. He's very awkward socially though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know how patient she can be under normal circumstances, but on a first date, she'll be on her best behavior."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've just got the dad, and I'm not sure he's anyone's type."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone is somebodies type. I don't think my dad has ever dated a guy before, but I don't think he'd be adverse to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep an eye out. Let me know when it doesn't work out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a little more hope than that, but I'll keep you in the loop." She looks to Jackson. "You busy Wednesday after school?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lydia, am I busy after school?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm in charge of your social calendar now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wanna come hang out at the Boarding House? I don't know if you're into mechanics, but I can guess that you will really appreciate the contents of the Salvatore garage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I wouldn't mind taking a tour."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awesome. Maybe we can even take the Ferrari out for a test drive." She stands. "I think that's enough mystery for me. I'll see you guys later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you later, Juliet."

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves once and looks for Matt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt is available and happy to see her!

"Hey. How was your day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I made a new friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. Do I know them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd hope so. Since we're going bowling with him and his two friends tomorrow. Scott McCall, potential Wonder Woman enthusiast?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I remember. Sounds fun. Are we hitching a ride?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott volunteered the Sheriff to be our taxi. Which is either going to be hilarious or a disaster."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be a very entertaining trainwreck. What do you want to do tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna come over and help me develop some of those photos I took the other day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like you know me. Sure, let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stefan is picking me up, so that'll be interesting."

She takes his hand and they head to the parking lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sean runs into them on their way out.

This is probably not much of a coincidence.

"Juliet, I wanted to apologize. Try to apologize, again. I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...it's fine. Stefan told me what happened. You were trying to help. I get that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How are things? At home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apart from being locked in my cell for four days, it's pretty normal. Dad has calmed down a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. And you and Matt? That's new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're sickeningly adorable together already."

He kisses her on the forehead, and then on the lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very humble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Humble isn't in my vocabulary." She leans into Matt affectionately. "How about you? Have you seen Stefan since he got back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, no. Is it that obvious?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your heart speeds up a little every time I mention him. Apart from that, no, not really. You should ask him out, he's perpetually single. Maybe it'll improve his mood. He's so broody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll give it serious consideration."

Permalink Mark Unread

A car pulls up beside them.

"That is genuinely the worst advice I have ever heard, mini me. Do you really hate this kid that much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damon! I don't hate him. I think they'd be cute together. But, what are you doing here? I thought Stefan was picking me up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Change of plan. You get your favourite, better looking cousin instead. Just your luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll catch you later."

He takes off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. I don't know if Juliet mentioned me. I'm Matt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The dutiful boyfriend, right. She is very smitten. Are you smitten, Matty?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very smitten."

Smitten look at Juliet!

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses him and then opens the car door and slides into the back seat, pulling him with her.

"We're going home. Was that your plan too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I was thinking about whisking you away on a family bonding road trip. Maybe steal a couple of cars, kill a couple of motorists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think Juliet wants to make the news for something that uninspired. Juliet, is killing motorists what you want to be known for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's tempting, but I'll think I'll pass on this one. I have homework."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess I'll just have to go at it alone. My own flesh and blood rejects me. This is my life now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're charming, I'm sure you can find someone else to accept you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And he goes for flattery. Interesting. Not what one would expect when confronted with a cannibalistic relative of their first girlfriend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I'm your type."

He looks at Juliet, not voicing whatever question he has.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into him and takes his hand.

"He's being a dick, it's his default setting. He won't touch you, I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't a man indulge in some harmless threats without being called names? What happened to respecting your elders?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you an elder? I think you have to be old, not just older than us. How old are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a day over 170."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's 173, to be exact. Wendigos live a really long time. Werewolves too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a good deal. More for werewolves than wendigos, no offense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, not into a little blood play?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She kicks his seat.

"Would you stop. This is why nobody ever wants to hang out with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He said I'm charming. They're all just intimidated by my wit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have to admit I'm biased towards another Salvatore."

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

She appreciates it a lot.

"You haven't met Stefan yet, didn't you see how overcome Sean was with him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not saying Sean has bad taste, I just think I picked the best one. What do you think of him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of Sean? He's nice enough. He has trouble with a lot of things though. Doesn't quite understand humans, I think. Makes it hard for him to fit in. He's not doing an awful job though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's one of Stefan's pet Wendigo family? That's so depressing. Feeding on the dead, not a good way to live."

He makes a face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you feed on the living?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotta keep my strength up somehow. Plus, corpse-eaters are taboo, I don't want all the other Wendigos to make fun of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We wouldn't want that."

He squeezes Juliet's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kissing is good! Damon is much lsss important than kissing.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is good because she will keep this up until they arrive at the Boarding House!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get out of my car. You're infecting it with all this lovey dovey bullshit. I'll need to get it detailed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt gets.

"So, here we are. Meeting the Salvatores."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was definitely the hard part. Dad and Stefan are not... that. If I had known he was here I would have better prepared you. You did good though."

She holds his hand tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He seems friendly enough. Maybe he'll grow on me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doubtful he'll stick around for long enough for that to happen. But absence makes the heart grow fonder or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's never do that."

Kiss! He lets his girlfriend (!!!) introduce him.

Permalink Mark Unread

They go inside and she leads him to the kitchen. "You should call him Zach, he doesn't like being called Mr. Salvatore. My grandfather was weird about it, apparently."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zach overhears.

"Your grandfather instilled respect, I can do that too, but without the antiquated formalities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Zach. It's nice to meet you."

He offers his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes it for a short moment before letting go, uncomfortable.

"I'm making some sandwiches if you want something to eat while you study."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No food allowed in the darkroom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's no place to do your homework. You need to focus on things outside of photography, Juliet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can have some sandwiches first. Photography can wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet makes a face at that but complies.

"Matt is on the lacrosse team, dad. That's something you have in common."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You any good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not attracting any talent scouts, but I do alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bobby Finstock is your coach? That must be an experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a word for it. If I were a decent writer, I'd probably use him as inspiration for a character. He's not nearly as interesting as a photographic subject. Although he makes the most fascinating expressions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got a bunch of hilarious shots of him at try-outs. Just. His face is so expressive. Also I think he had a stroke or something when Scotts friend got onto the field."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's an amazing photographer. Have you seen any of her work, Mr. Salvatore?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most of the art on the walls are hers. I especially like her early work. Which mostly consisted of pictures of her pet rabbit, Bugzy. Hundreds of them. Just of the rabbit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He was a very handsome rabbit! And they were all very artistic. I didn't have any friends so I had to make do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt looks around at the accumulated evidence of her adorableness.

"I really admire your commitment to the pursuit of your passions, Juliet. And to the handsomeness of rabbits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't actually think her ego needs to be fed any more. It's already too big for her tiny tiny body."

An older looking teen walks into the kitchen and steals Juliets sandwich.

"You must be Matt, I'm Stefan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, he's a thief and a liar. I'm not tiny, I'm just not done growing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt kisses her on the forehead, as if reminding her that she is, indeed, tiny.

"Stefan, it's good to finally meet you. I've heard lots of things."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face at Matt and Stefan.

"I've told him all bad things, all the juicy stuff. Like the fate of my handsome bunny. RIP Bugzy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stefan winces slightly and hands her back the half eaten sandwich.

"I thought I was going to pick you up from school. Did you catch a lift with Matt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Actually, Damon gave us a ride."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zach sighs loudly.

"I thought he would have left by now. Stefan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Hale's aren't around anymore to keep him away and he has a place in town now. I haven't actually spoken to him, he's been avoiding me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He said he was here for Juliet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can take care of myself now. I have an anchor."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Stefan looks between them, uneasy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The wolfsbane? It's never been enough, Juliet. He's stronger than you and Stefan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't before. But. Matt is my anchor now. I can control myself. Even on the fullmoon. It was... I don't need the wolfsbane anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet explained things to me. I just want to be here to support her."

Permalink Mark Unread

He stares at him.

"You haven't known her a month. This is her life, it's very dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"We care about each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a nice thought, Matt, but you don't know what you're getting yourself into."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't need ominous warnings, dad. I'll explain everything, properly, and he can make up his own mind. He's smart enough to make that choice himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I can take care of myself.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does seem that way. You're handling this very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need him. He's strong and he helps me handle... everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

“If there are things I need to know, we should get them out of the way now. Far as I can tell, there’s a lot of dangerous stuff out there.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am dangerous. If I lost control- it's happened before, before we started using the wolfsbane. I broke free and killed somebody. I'm also an Alpha. Which means if I bite someone, they can become a werewolf too. Or they die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be careful. This doesn't change how I feel about you, it just means I need to look out for myself. I've been doing that a long time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are ways. Druid magic is powerful. You might be able to learn some of it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do know someone that could help with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zach leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is he going to be okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad has... he gets stressed. Damon being around does that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I get that. I'm not exactly his biggest fan, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's not sticking around, is he? He never does...."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take care of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Maybe we should talk about something else. Stefan, what’s going on with you?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been offering my services as a mechanic, helping out in town. It's a hobby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you planning your annual birthday trip to New York? You'll be gone over Halloween, won't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's Lexi's plan. She was hoping you'd join us, but I'm sure you have other things."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We made other plans. If you want to go, I don’t mind.”

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses him.

"Nowhere I'd rather be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

...

"We should probably study."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose if we want to be successful at this high school thing."

She sighs dramatically and they go do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They study. They kiss, but they mostly study. Matt insists, he actually does need to study, he just likes her company.

Eventually, Matt has to leave.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Juliet."

He kisses her goodbye.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Farewell. God knows when we shall meet again."

Permalink Mark Unread

The next day, Erica sits next to her in homeroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, beautiful. You have a good night?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was the same as always. How's your allergy? If that's the lie we're going with. Maybe it's a genetic disorder? We might want to get our stories straight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like a lie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is the truth going to set me free as in kill me or just free me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The truth is dangerous, but just the knowledge won't kill you. Acting on the knowledge? That's an unknown."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try not to do anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Skip your next class with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"First class of the day. What a rebel. Sure."

And she does. After homeroom, she hangs back with Juliet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits until they are alone.

"So. I'm a werewolf."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...what, seriously?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seriously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I get it. God, put those away. What does that even mean? Werewolves are fictional, how do you even work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magic. We assume my mom was a werewolf. I change into a wolf on the full moon. Well, whenever I want, but the full moon is usually compulsory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I be watching for wolves that are looking at me weird?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most werewolves don't change into actual wolves, just like, very hairy people with pointed ears, long teeth, and sharp claws. I'm kinda special in that regard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. So. Have you hurt anyone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yes. When I was a kid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Is there anything that's relevant to me about how werewolves work? Are you contagious? Do you eat humans? Any part of humans: blood, flesh, hair? Is it just the transforming or do you have other powers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If an Alpha bites a human, they can they turn into a werewolf or die. I don't eat humans. I have heightened senses, strength and speed. I heal really fast and I have the ability to take away pain from people I care about. I also age really slowly, but that may only really be a definite thing with born werewolves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a good deal. It's hard to control?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is. I've always had an especially hard time dealing with it. But with the right anchor, something to focus on, it can be easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who's your alpha?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm an Alpha. I don't have a pack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that as cool as it sounds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like being a werewolf. I wouldn't want to be anything but. So, yeah, it is cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I can prove to you that I'll be able to handle it, will you turn me? It doesn't have to be soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never done it before and you could die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could die the next time I have a seizure. Do you need a parental consent form?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No. I just-" she pauses, "I don't know how to be any sort of good Alpha to you? If I did that. And I couldn't just let you go on your own.  I want to help you. I just have no idea how that would work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what, you need a practice run on someone who'll be okay if you can't? I can find you someone. Don't worry about me spilling the beans, I can talk around it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a terrible plan," she sighs, "I'm not worried about you telling anyone, I trust you. But. I only just got my own shit together. You saw me last week, I was a mess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. How can I find another alpha?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"....no. I'll do it. You just need to give me time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll give you time. Thank you."

Erica hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs her back.

"I'll figure this out, I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. Werewolf. That's pretty cool. I hope you can keep everything anchored, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Matt is my anchor. Which is... a Thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that romantic or creepy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's probably both. Or dependant on how Matt sees it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck with that. See you around, Juliet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See-ya."

She waits for her to leave and sends a text to Damon.

[So. You know a few werewolves. Do you know a lot about the process of Turning someone into one?]

Permalink Mark Unread

He responds nearly immediately.

[Now that's a loaded question.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[It's important.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[He would probably die.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm not talking about Matt. Do you know or not?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Sure. I am a fountain of knowledge.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[And you'll tell me?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[Anything for my favourite niece.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm your only niece.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[As far as you know. Go to class.]

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Classes proceed.

Lydia and her friends want Juliet to sit with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can sit and also bring along Matt because she wants to.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet. You brought a friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'm Matt. We've met. Several times."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're glad you two are joining us. Jackson, tell them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you two like bowling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me save everyone some time. They want a double date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure if I like bowling! We will be finding out tonight though, we're going with Scott and his two friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really. That's nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"..would you like to come along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might get a little crowded. McCall, really? Doesn't he always hang out with Stilinski?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mentioned his mom going on a date with my dad tonight. We were gonna hang out while that happens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes more sense. We'd love to come."

Permalink Mark Unread

To Matt: "Should I poll Scott about this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jackson's right, it will be a little crowded. Even if he says yes, it's politer to ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks out over the cafeteria. Is Scott around?

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott is having lunch with Stiles and Harley.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'll be right back." She goes over to him and sits. "Hello again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. What's going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So about our group date thing tonight. How do you feel about Jackson and Lydia coming around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Jackson and Lydia.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're observing with interest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this a prank?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...no? Why would I do that, I like you. I mean, I don't think I would even do that to someone I didn't like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They clearly sent you, it's a fair guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I sent myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They can come if they really want. He knows Stiles is going to be there, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm like a scab. He can pick and pick, but I'm not going anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm missing some interpersonal knowledge here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles and Jackson don't really get along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're nemeses. Since kindergarten."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened in kindergarten?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, he took my toys? I took his? Anyway, he didn't let it go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure that's how I'd describe it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how would you describe it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles and Jackson are over-dramatic drama queens, except Stiles had a habit of biting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He didn't start the biting until later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it's all bullshit kid stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm uninviting myself. You guys can have fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably best, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, um, that sounds like it'll work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope Jackson's not as competitive about bowling as he is about everything else. I'll win."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I might be up there with my competitiveness, so watch out. I'll get my cousin to drive us. Here's my number, text me your addresses." She writes it down and hands it to Scott... and then another to Stiles. "And if you change you mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to guarantee me and Jackson don't spend the night sniping at each other, I'm staying home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's cool, we can all hang out together at my and Diaz' Halloween party. Spend some quality time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. See you later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Later." She goes back and sits next to Matt. "Look at me being all polite. I'm growing as a person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a start. I missed you."

He doesn't kiss her, because he has some semblance of self-control.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll give him a kiss on the cheek anyway and then looks to Jackson.

"So apparently you and Stiles are nemeses, so he's not coming. But otherwise it's a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even better. It's a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my first time bowling, but do be prepared to be dominated. I have many talents."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're looking forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to come over to my house beforehand? You can tell me what is and isn't appropriate bowling attire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We were going to leave at 6:30, so come over anytime before then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"

After lunch, they go their separate ways.

Permalink Mark Unread

Later that night, Lydia arrives at the Boarding House.

It's a little creepy, but that's how old houses usually are. Besides, she's been here before. It's not a dark alley or a precarious ledge.

Breathe, Lydia.

Permalink Mark Unread

A tall man opens the door before she has the chance to knock.

"I didn't order any take out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I come bearing fashion sense, the better to dress her with. I should have brought my red cloak, if you're that thirsty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Remember that for next time."

He steps back, welcoming her inside.

"Though I'm sure my darling cousin would be upset if I ate you all up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Restrain yourself to just a taste, then. I'm sure I'm not going to test your self-control."

She steps past him, looking around. It's not really any less creepy on the inside, but it's more tastefully decorated.

"Should I just head on upstairs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And leave me all on my lonesome?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet probably wouldn't want me to get distracted. Girls like me shouldn't stray from the path."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Life on the path is safer, but has dangers of it's own. At least I can make it enjoyable."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stefan walks into the foyer.

"Damon. Juliet is waiting for her friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can pick this up some other time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So friendly. I should come home more often."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll show you to Juliet's room."

Permalink Mark Unread

With a small wave, she follows Stefan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Stefan, Juliet's cousin. You're Lydia?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a pleasure to meet you. The Salvatores must have good genes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the families pride and joy, good genes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How very Victorian. How recently are you from Italy? Were you all born here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Salvatores came to America in the early 1800s and eventually settled here in Beacon Hills. We were one of the original settlers. Every generation of Salvatores since have been born right here in town."

Permalink Mark Unread

They arrive at Juliet's room where she is busy pushing out a clothes wrack to the middle of the room.

"Stefan, she didn't ask for a complete family history."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I actually did ask for a partial one. Thank you, Stefan. We'll be doing girl stuff now. See you in a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have been dismissed. Have fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make sure Damon is out of the house before we leave, please!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have it covered."

He leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. That was Damon Salvatore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does his name proceed him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, but I just met him, and he left an impression. I'm savoring the name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He tends to do that. Good impression this time, I'm hoping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's charming. I wish Jackson were half as charming. So, show me what you have to work with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find Jackson very charming, but Damon does have a surplus of it. I'm glad he's using it for good rather than evil." She laughs and then gestures to her selection of clothes.

They're all very expensive and high quality, some of them appear to be vintage as well. Though everything is very eclectic, nothing really goes together.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're going bowling, so it should look good on her but not too nice.

Lydia finds a few combinations for Juliet to try.

"Is he out of town a lot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some bad blood between my dad and him. Damon has an apartment in town because of it. But he hasn't really lived here since he was a kid, just tends to drop into town to see me. Usually I'm whisked away and we go on an adventure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That must be nice. He seems like he knows how to have a good time."

She hands Juliet her choice of two outfits, one more revealing, and one more accentuating.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries the second outfit first.

"He's lived a exciting life, so he knows how to have fun. Also how to scare the daylights out of Matt. That wasn't very fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? What did he do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He likes to be casually threatening, especially around new people. Tries to get a gage of how they work and potential future interactions. Also I've never had a boyfriend before, so he had to be the cliché Scary Older Relative at him. I didn't much appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe he needs someone to distract him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're volunteering?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. Is he single?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's single. I'm pretty sure he's still hung up on his ex. Knowing him though, that probably won't stop him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Put in a good word for me?"

She appraises Juliet's outfit.

"This one looks good. You can try the other one if you want, but I think you were right to pick this. It's more tasteful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at her and smooths down the dress.

"I can do that. Should I also attach myself more to Jackson in response, or will he be fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'll be fine. Besides, you have Matt to worry about. Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, you don't think he'd appreciate me having another boy on my arm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most boys don't. You could try convincing him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not. That might split his attention too much. I require all of it. I'm selfish like that."

She picks up her jacket and they leave the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lydia looks for Damon on their way out.

Permalink Mark Unread

No Damon, but Stefan and Zach are in the foyer.

"All ready to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who is going to be there again? You mentioned Scott."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott and his friend Harley. And Lydia's boyfriend Jackson. It's a group thing. Matt is going to be there too, you don't have to worry."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Stick with Matt then. Have him call me if something happens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be fine. Enjoy your date."

Permalink Mark Unread

Not my boyfriend," she mumbles, but Salvatores at large don't need to be corrected on that.

They go.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You both look very nice, you do good work, Lydia. Is fashion something you're interested in?"

They get into a large and very expensive SUV and head off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Erica mentioned that she wants your closet, so you're definitely leaving an impression."

She directs Stefan to Matts house.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's one of my many interests."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far I know you like fashion, bowling, Latin and Damon. I suppose that's enough to work with. I am pretty knowledgeable on the latter two."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure Stefan doesn't want to hear about this."

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls her eyes.

"Stefan needs to stop being so stuffy. Maybe going out with Sean would help with that, he pretty much worships him. Could be beneficial."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's just a kid, Juliet. He'll find someone else soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sean Walcott? He's cute enough, no major complexes. I'd go for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"Another endorsement! See, I'm always right. You haven't had anyone serious since her, Sean will do you good."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulls up to Matts house in record time.

"This has nothing to do with her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet, I hope if there's any juicy gossip, you'd tell me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will totally fill you in later, it's downright scandalous. But boyfriend awaits."

She hops out of the car and knocks on Matts door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt answers. He's appropriately dressed for the venue, and seems to appreciate Juliet's outfit.

After he kisses her, they can collect the next one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay but they can wait just a little bit longer so Juliet can appreciate the kiss properly.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a minute or so Stefan will beep the horn. Not vindictively at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah no he pretty much agrees they should go. Kissing in front of his house is a terrible idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relents easily, with only a small pout, and they get into the car and go to pick up everyone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Harley and Scott are already at his house, and they pile into the car too.

"Hey, Mr. Salvatore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can call me Stefan. Mr. Salvatore implies that I'm old," he jokes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. It's nice to meet you. Is it just Jackson left?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can just text and tell him not to come."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why, was it something we said?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want him there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be a little awkward, but I guess I'll deal."

She directs them to Jackson's house.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I want to have a good time. Jackson is my friend, he can be on a team with me and Matt."

Do not break up with him right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. We can have a good time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, uh, Juliet, you do photography, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She does. She's amazing. Not as amazing as me, but still amazing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My ego would dictate that I argue that point, but I also agree that you are the most amazing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

She's earned it!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't seen any of Matts work, but Juliet is very talented. Are you an artist too, Scott?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'm not, I just heard Juliet was. I mostly just play video games, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't played many video games recently, I'm more of a book reader."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that code for 'writing non-stop in your diary'. Seriously, that's all I see you doing these days. Though I am fond of some of the vintage Stefan Diaries." She addresses Matt, "I should show you them someday, they're really interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you insist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah? What do you write about, Stefan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Private things that nosey cousins really shouldn't mention in front of just anyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I only offered to show it to Matt. Matt is obviously always the exception here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Lydia, Harley, and Scott just don't exist in this universe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I don't mind. There are things a girl has to do when there's a man in her life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Besides, she doesn't decide who reads your diaries. Right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe if he kept them out of reach of tiny five-year-old Juliet's hands I wouldn't be addicted to reading them and wouldn't be recommending them to my boyfriend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They were locked in a cabinet in my room, you broke the glass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My point still stands."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was a real go-getter, huh."

He wraps his arms around her, kissing her neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose you could call it that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles in delight and and leans into Matt.

"What was I supposed to do? I couldn't find the key anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, every problem needs more broken glass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, come on, let her have her fun. It was years ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I stand by my method. Today and ten years ago. It's tried and true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you at least clean up after yourself? It's not much fun if you get caught."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was five. And immediately went and made Damon read them to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's incapable of feeling shame. My little sociopath."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our little sociopath."

He kisses her, which rather completely occupies them the rest of the trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet is very pleased with this result and is not complaining. Probably ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulls into Jackson's house...and beeps the horn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jackson comes out and joins them.

”McCall. Harlowe. Lydia. How’s everyone doing?”

He ignores the kissing couple.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We’re doing okay. I’m Scott, this is Harley.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can sit in the front away from the spectacle in the back. I'm Stefan, Juliet's cousin."

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’s great to meet you.”

He looks at Lydia as he sits down.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Damon, too.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“What a good-looking family.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"We try."

He starts driving and eventually addresses Lydia since Matt and Juliet are unavailable.

"Do you know what time you're likely to finish up? Wondering if I should stick around."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We have an even number of players. Maybe some other time.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“We can text you half an hour before we’re done, right, Juliet?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet is occupied.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll give you my number, Scott, we shouldn't rely on Juliet for this. She has terrible time management."

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet declines to comment.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Okay. Thanks. I’ll let you know.”

Bowling!

Permalink Mark Unread

Bowling. He can stop kissing Juliet for this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet will make the effort too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Zach is anxiously preparing food and waiting for his date. Date. Yup. That's happening.

Permalink Mark Unread

At the agreed upon time, his date arrives.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets her into the house, kind of flustered.

"Um, welcome. Dinner is nearly ready and wow that's such a cliche thing to say," He laughs, "But, do you drink?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can get away with a lot. It's been so long since I did this that I don't even remember what all the cliches are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can work it out together. Maybe find something original in there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe! Let's see what you've got so far."

She sits.

Permalink Mark Unread

He continues preparing dinner.

"So Scott and Juliet are off doing a thing together. Bowling. I should have expected that really, she's always been so- whatever this is," he laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not surprised they're getting along already. She reminds me of Stiles. Stilinski, his best friend, the Sheriff's kid. The same nervous energy hiding a massive ego."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know Noah, we went to school together. I haven't met Stiles. But that- is a very apt description of my Juliet. I'm afraid Damon's influence while raising her was... a lot. She has a lot to deal with though, so anything that isn't-" he pauses, "Sorry- probably a bit too deep there, I'm rambling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine. If we didn't talk about our kids, there'd probably be something wrong with us. Single parents, you know? Let's just agree not to bring it up again."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles at her.

"You work at the hospital. How do you like it there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good work. I'm helping people and purring food on the table. What about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Salvatore's have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies, my grandfathers doing. I try to keep it all orderly. Takes me all over, but I try to keep at home as much as possible."

He offers her a drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just water, thanks. I don't think I know a lot about your family. Are you tired of talking about them by now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets her water.

"I don't mind. Salvatores have a long history, can get kind of boring. What do you know already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a lot, but I can take just the Cliff Notes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've been in Beacon Hills a long time, the Hales are in the lead though. Helped build the town. Every generation of Salvatore has been born here. My mom was an avid gardner," he smiles, "she owned and worked at the local florist. It was her pride and joy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about you? Do you garden?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, she insisted. I mostly keep up my own produce nowadays. I'm more of a chef."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's promising. I'm kind of hopeless in the kitchen. Scott takes care of it when we don't have get takeout. Somehow he managed to learn my mom's recipes from me even though I can't make any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He sounds like a good kid. Juliet and I spend time in the kitchen too. She's pretty good, though would rather watch while I do all the work. It's a good system."

He finishes off the food and dishes it out.

"Let's hope all my bragging pans out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dinner is had.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jackson turns out to be less good at bowling than he admits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lydia is very encouraging!

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet manages very well. Well. Her enthusiasm and her secret werewolf spacial awareness really pays off, which is kind of cheating. So.

She tries to keep it low-key, but subtlety isn't really her strong suit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone is appropriately impressed.

"I don't think three-on-three is fair with skills like that. It would take all five of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

The less subtle Juliet gets, the more Lydia seems to improve.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, I think Lydia is hiding some secret skills. Maybe it'll give you a chance," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lydia's a terrible bowler. We're working on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'll concede physical competitions to you, dear Juliet. I'm a good team player, but an athlete I am not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We make a great team. I'm an awful team player."

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott and Harley are thoroughly average.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jackson continues to be worse at bowling than any other sport he's tried.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he's on her team, she supposes she should help him. So she goes up to him and talks quietly.

"Jackson, you've got this. You're just not focussing on your technique well enough. The way you're holding the ball and the angle you're releasing it. I'll show you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do, you're just distracted. We've got to show Lydia, Scott, and Harley our pure bowling superiority."

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries again, this time trying to stay focused. He manages to hit the pins this time, but there's no chance he's competitive with Juliet and Lydia.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is acceptable and she cheers.

"Anyone want any food? My shout."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can cover me and Harley."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's up to you, I don't mind either way. Just give me your orders and I shall deliver."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lydia declined to order, but everyone else happily tells her what they want.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she'll order her a strawberry milkshake regardless.

She heads on over to the counter and does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

A Damon appears.

"You're just embarrassing them now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I haven't been too bad. Lydia is doing well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is at that. Pretty little thing. Eager too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what, you're here to spy on her or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lydia proceeds to prove her dominance at bowling. Again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not inviting you to join. Jackson is here, I don't know how that will work out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jacksons the boyfriend, I assume."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or something. What you can do is pay for our food. It's the least you can do for scaring the shit out of my boyfriend and being a creep at my new friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is she the one you want to turn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I'm pretty sure if I turned her, she'd be a threat to my Alpha-ness."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt looks over at the counter.

Matt looks away from the counter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damon notices this and laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you're a dick. Would you lay off him, I really like him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're so desperate for attention that you'd settle for just anyone, I know someone that would be better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to date Enzo, Damon. Just. Leave, will you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not going to introduce me to the rest of your friends? I'm hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up all their orders, leaving Damon to pay for it, and balences them all expertly over to their table. She ignores him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Juliet!"

They enjoy some food and the game.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is delicious. I wasn't sure what to expect, some guys aren't as good at cooking as they think they are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've worked on it, worked at a couple of restaurants when I was in college. But I do really enjoy it, so that helps. And I used to cook for everyone when this place was actually functioning as a Boarding House too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Raf told me some interesting stories. The Salvatores and the Hales. It was the subject of a lot of gossip."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're a small town, not much else to do but gossip. Anything particularly interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really. There were a lot of rumors about why you changed so much in your senior year. Apparently there was one going around that you had an identical twin you'd been hiding in your basement."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, yes, Frank. We've had many a good time together." He laughs. "I suppose I did change a lot. It had a lot to do with my Uncle. We didn't get along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's too bad. I'm grateful my family stayed away even after the divorce. They're good people, and I love them, but it's much easier to control when I visit them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was the idea I had in college, but then my father passed away and my uncle was himself, so I moved back home. Have been here ever since."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds hard, I'm sorry. At least you have Juliet now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She makes it worth it. No room for regrets. What about you, any juicy gossip in your town growing up? Where are you from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nowhere, Arizona. I was known as the town slut, which is an impressive reputation at thirteen. I still haven't figured out how it started."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's- yeah," he laughs, "they tended to lean more towards drugs and alcohol with my rumors. Sexism at it's finest there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, my father-in-law refined sexism until it demanded a debutante ball. High school was nothing compared to that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not something I ever had a part in, my mother tried. I just tended to be much too busy. Raf and I spent a lot of time together for a while there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really? He never mentioned that he knew you. He only ever talked about what everyone else was saying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, the fact that I had the biggest crush on him in high school might have had something to do with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You poor thing. Did he ever try to do that thing where he strips...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never got that, he was either very very straight or just not interested. Either way, no stripping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably straight. I'm sorry you missed it, it's really something. He was always sexiest when he wasn't trying. That's probably half of why things went so wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see that. Did you ever see him play? He was something. Kind of a mess, but a good-looking mess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He stopped playing after high school. He had some old videos, though. That's probably why Scott got so into it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's interesting. Maybe I'm in some of them. Juliet would probably get a laugh out of them. After she critiqued the quality of the video, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad Scott hasn't picked something to act superior about. I don't think I'm as patient as you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It keeps her focused, so it works for us. She has bipolar, the art helps her cope with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good to hear. Is she going to try that professionally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She has many plans. Art school is definitely in her future, at the very least. She's been eyeing Paris in particular. Though hopefully, she'll decide on something closer to home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully. Is it complicated to send her to school in another country?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very. I'd need to buy up property and move there myself, likely. But we haven't spoken about it. She was homeschooled until very recently. This whole high school and college thing is pretty alien to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I can teach you a thing or two."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do seem to have it handled really well. Or maybe that's just your whole thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'll take that as a compliment."

Melissa pokes at what's left of her food.

"Anything planned for dessert?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made cannoli."He gets up and heads on over to the bench and brings back over a large plate. "I thought about making pancakes, but this is a little more impressive for a first date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm impressed."

She takes one, and her hand hovers over the plate before she pulls it back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to take some home? Maybe Scott would like some. Or you can hoard them for yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lady never tells. I'll take two as long as you're offering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I did make them for you. You can take however many you want."

He picks one out himself and takes a bite.

"How long have you been at the hospital?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, about ten years now. I started after Raf and I settled here- for a while we had an apartment in L.A."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I went to college in North Carolina, nothing as exciting as L.A."

Permalink Mark Unread

"L.A. is much less exciting if you don't have any money, and we didn't. Raf was doing okay as a security guard, but then I had to drop out of med school when Scott got sick, I couldn't have him sitting at home when he should be seeing a doctor, and then Raf got fired. It was a mess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like it. Scott got better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. He was sick a lot as a kid. Now it's just the asthma, and sometimes that goes away when they grow up. Or at least, that's what the doctors said. He can live with it, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kids are tough. Adapt well. I'm still working on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can figure it out together."

With dinner and dessert finished, Melissa offers to help with the dishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's happy for her to help.

"Do you like dancing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not my strong suit. Are you okay with a learning curve?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helping you learn sounds fun, plus I'm sure I've forgotten everything I learned in college."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Dancing. Friday?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Friday is good." He looks very pleased. "I'm sure I can give credit to my cooking skills for this next date?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“You’re definitely something. Dancing instead of dinner, next time, or my waistline won’t forgive me.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs. "We can work out a system. Cooking for you was really enjoyable."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m glad to hear it.”

She gets up, gathering her purse and some food for later.

”I’ll see you then.”

Permalink Mark Unread

...he wants to kiss her. But. Probably they're not there yet.

"I'll call you on Thursday with the details."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’ll be waiting by the phone.”

She waves, and she’s off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Jackson’s bowling game has improved, but not nearly enough to make a difference.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Juliet's game has gone significantly down, as well as her mood.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lydia is pleased with her victory anyway. ”Good game, everyone.” She shakes hands with everyone politely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet puts a smile on her face, determined not to let her mood (or Damon) affect anyone else.

"We should play again some other time. Just the two of us, really duke it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’d be happy to.”

She takes Jackson’s hand, and they head off together.

Permalink Mark Unread

“What did Damon have to say?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“We can go, if you guys are talking about something personal.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yeah, my parents can pick us up.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would probably be rude of me. I shouldn't let my family problems inconvenience everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We’re done anyway, we could go back and hope they’re done.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“We wouldn’t want to rush love.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can just hang out here for a while? Get to know each other a little better and not talk about annoying cousins." She leans her head on Matt's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Okay. Let’s do some icebreakers. Um, Juliet, what’s your favorite sport.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been mostly exposed to football. Stefan is a big fan. But I like running the best. I'm thinking of joining the track team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Football, really? I guess he's not really a local."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Track is probably going to be fun. I was thinking of joining."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a favorite food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's the most local but he just has normal sporting taste. I'm a big fan of tiramisù, this coffee flavored desert. Anything with coffee in it, really. Okay, favourite class so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Math. I think I might do something in engineering. Matt, what about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"English, no contest. Our school doesn't offer photography classes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where would you want to go, if you could go anywhere in the world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's such a hard choice. There's the obvious one, Florence, where the Salvatores came from. But also Paris and Istanbul. There's so much history there. I'm thinking of taking a gap year after high school. If dad will let me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Paris, the city of art and romance. We should go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish. I'm aiming for San Francisco."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's a classic: desert island, three things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Inhaler, first aid kit, and a hammer."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses Matt. "We should."

"Desert island. I would like Matt, my camera and... something practical, like a machete or... a satellite phone. Except if I have Matt and my camera I'm pretty content to just stay there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think satellite phones are very sporting. You can have another try. I'd go for...hairdryer, blankets, and flares."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she can't have a phone, you can't have flares. I think the rule is no ways to get off the island."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Machete works then. Gotta build a cozy shelter somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know how to build a shelter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely not. Matt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about me makes you think I'm good with my hands?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Between me and Scott, we can figure it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, we can do that. What do Matt and Juliet do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet bites her tongue and moves on.

"I'm a good hunter, I can teach Matt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm eager to learn."

Kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"This desert island sounds pretty great," she laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad someone is enjoying it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long have you two been together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Since the start of term, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott gets a text, and checks it.

"Looks like they're finishing up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll text Stefan. He's probably reading in his car in the parking lot."

She gets out her phone and sends off a message.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm surprised Martin and Whittemore came. I know you invited them, but still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jackson is my friend and Lydia is heading that way too. Plus I kinda assumed that they're a package deal right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, are they actually dating? They keep playing coy about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't they been dating for a while?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure they are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Probably for not much longer...

"I get the feeling that if Lydia wants something, she usually gets it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure she's the reason Jackson and Danny are so popular. Deal with the devil?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She knows how to strike a bargain, if so."

She gets a response on her phone and laughs.

"Yeah, Stef is just outside. Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They go.

"Thanks again for the ride, Stefan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was my pleasure. My first time playing taxi, it wasn't awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry if we kept you waiting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we wouldn't want to cut into your reading time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He has plenty of that. Broody, reading and writing in his diary. Classic romantic hero pastimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is he a classic romantic hero? I don't see any ruffles, or carriages."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My other ride is a carriage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ruffles are there but carefully hidden. Trust me on this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, babe, maybe we should check. You could be defending his honor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe they're just very subtle ruffles. It's not like any good classic romantic heroes look totally out of place. He has to blend in to really stand out."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"Theres no subtlety about it. There's a portion of the attic that is just full of old clothes. Mostly from the eighteen-hundreds but there's a couple there from the fifteen-hundreds and just. It's a ruffle palooza. He's got so much choice there."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’ve always wondered if I was born a century too late, but then I think about their cameras.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Harley and Scott disembark first, thanking Stefan for the ride.

Permalink Mark Unread

...which just leaves Matt and Juliet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans close against him.

"So that wasn't awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

“It was fun, and exhausting. I’m ready for it to be just us again.”

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses him.

"Nobody is ever going to cut into my Matt time. It's a universal law."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kissing it is!

Permalink Mark Unread

Stefan resists the urge to roll his eyes and turns the music up instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet ignores him and his music.

Matt kisses are much more important.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt agrees wholeheartedly.

Matt doesn't seem inclined to disengage when they get to his house.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless you plan on coming home with me, this is probably your stop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I should. They won't miss me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I should just keep you then."

Permalink Mark Unread

One more kiss for the road.

”I should go. We can pick this up another time.”

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets in one more kiss.

"I love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, okay, one more, but then he goes home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't give me that look. I've seen the way you gaze at her picture. You have literally no legs to stand on here, you're legless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How am I ever going to drive us home then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at him and starts climbing into the front seat.

"You can't, which means that I get to drive!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs and swats away her limbs and pushes her into the passenger seat.

"That's not happening. I think I've suffered enough for tonight. Put on your seat belt."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts on her seatbelt.

"Your suffering is like fine wine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, Damon. Try not to get too drunk."

They drive home.

Permalink Mark Unread

They arrive at home and get out of the car

"Do you wanna watch a movie? Dad bought me some new films for the projector, we could make a night of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds great. I'll make us up some popcorn."

They enter the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Enzo is waiting for them in the foyer.

"No need, mate, I already helped myself."

And then he is a body in motion and a sickening crack-

Permalink Mark Unread

Stefan falls to the floor, his neck at an unnatural angle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enzo? What-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry about this, love, but there are some things that just have to happen."

He reaches into his pocket and pulls something out. He throws it at her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts coughing, dust flying into her face and down her throat.

It burns and she can't move properly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Enzo moves behind her and takes a hold of her arms, restraining her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damon walks into the room, pulling two people with him.

"Well now that's out of the way, we can move on to the main performance of the evening."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt doesn't seem to be enjoying the show, but he's not really a natural performer.

"I prefer to be behind the camera."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zach looks very bruised and his head is bleeding.

He struggles against his bonds when he sees Juliet and starts yelling- though it's muffled by whatever is taped into his mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damon rolls his eyes and forces them both down to their knees.

"Yeah, as evidenced by your creepy stalker shrine." He addresses the coughing Juliet, "A real class act you found here, mini-me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She struggles to control her coughing and hangs near limp in Enzo's arms.

"Damon- what the fuck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet, don't give him what he wants. You're stronger than he is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enzo dosed me with something, I can't move."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really my preferred method, but we can't have you wolfing out on us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the plan, exactly? You think my parents won't come looking for you? Do you really want to mow down the entire town just to keep this quiet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well that's really up to Juliet, really. This is all for her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you want? What is this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want to be an Alpha, don't you? Have you own little pack, be powerful. This is the first step."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt doesn't have any clever quips. The bonds are tighter than he'd like. At least his neck isn't restrained. He can still breathe. He's still here, with his Juliet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is insane. Let them go. Now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is the world we live in. You need control. An anchor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have an anchor. I'm in control. I don't need whatever this is."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hopes there's a jogger passing by.

Matt screams, shouting anything like "help" that he can muster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damon rolls his eyes.

"If you don't shut up, I'll just have to end this. Juliet would make a beautiful corpse."

Permalink Mark Unread

The screams trail off.

He bites the inside of his cheek, trying not to think.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sweet silence. Now, where was I. Ah. Your new anchor. Yeah, that just won't do at all. Your stalker here really isn't sufficient. People are notoriously bad for this sort of thing. You need something better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And this is your alternative?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the alternatives. The death of someone you love. The rage you will feel. It's better. It'll make you stronger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can try. But first. I'm spoilt for choice. So. You get to choose, I'll give you that much. Don't say I never got you anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you."

He doesn't look at Zach, or Damon. He only has eyes for Juliet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She stares at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zach's struggles get more aggressive, but it's pointless.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks down at her father and she starts sobbing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. I never really liked him anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

I's easy enough to pretend he's somewhere else, with Juliet.

Matt died when he was ten; everything since then has just been the dreams of a dying boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

-and Damon uses his claws and rips out Zach's throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet screams and tries to move. She can't move, the wolfbane and Enzo and everything stops her from doing anything but scream.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damon feasts on his flesh and then looks up at her.

"Not really the outcome I was expecting, but I suppose you are my blood." He looks down at Zach. "I've been wanting to do that for a lifetime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get out of her house."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My house, thank you. But. Yeah, my work here is done." He walks forward and looks down at Juliet. "It had to be done. I'll see you again soon. "

He kisses her on her forehead, leaving behind her father's blood. And smiles.

"My condolences."

Permalink Mark Unread

Damon leaves and Enzo lets Juliet go, resting her lightly on the floor.

"Call me, love. I'll be there."

He follows Damon out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm here," he whispers, uselessly, like it'll matter.

"I'm here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sobs and attempts to stand, do anything. She can't move.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's not much he can say for this.

They can plan revenge later.

For now, he does his best to comfort her.
