"Yeah." She pauses for a moment. "Stefan isn't so bad. I like him, even. But with him comes his brother, Damon. He's a psychopath."

"...at least you like one of them?" Eric suggests, not entirely sure what else he's supposed to say or do.

She nods and changes the subject.

"Did you see the comet last month? I managed to take so many great pictures of it. It was really beautiful."

They arrive at the Mystic Grill, Juliet stares at a young blonde boy who smiles at her and waves them both on. She leads them to a booth near the corner.

He nods. "Got a good view from where I was staying."

Eric shrinks in on himself a little when they enter the Grill. He's...never actually been inside before. He's...fairly sure the blonde boy isn't one of the people who's chased him off before. "You know him?" he murmurs to Juliet.

"Yeah. I kinda just murdered his sister like two hours ago."

He blinks. "Oh. As you do. No choice?"

"She was going to eat my friend. I mean. She was a vampire."

He nods, almost sagely. "Only reasonable to kill her then," he says agreeably.

"She wasn't a bad person before. Before Damon turned her. She. Wasn't a good person either, but she didn't deserve this."

"Your cousin's a dick," Eric decides. "And you didn't have a choice. Gotta survive. Gotta look after- your friend survived right?"

"He's alive. He hates me and will never speak to me again. But. That's better than him being dead."

"...M'sorry it's like that," he says, sounding genuine. "But yeah, alive's better'n dead."

"I just don't-"

"Hey, Jules. You're out late. Are you just coming back from the Halloween bash at the school?"

"I- um. No? I mean. Yes. I was there. And then I- uh, left."

"I figured. You've got a little bit of fake blood left on your shirt."

He looks over at Eric.

"I'm Alex. I'll be serving you tonight. Have we met before?"

She looks down at her shirt and there is indeed quite a bit of blood on it. Vickis blood.

Ahhhhhh.

She tries not to start panicking.

He pushes the jacket he had shed over the table to her, apparently absently.

"Nah," he sounds calm, he looks calm, but he's focused on Juliet, can see her panic. "Just passing through really. Could we get a jug of water and a few more minutes to decide on food?"

Juliet quickly takes the jacket and puts it on, buttoning it up. She avoids looking at Alex.

"Sure, man, no problem." He looks back over to Juliet, giving her a sly look. "You two take your time. I'll bring your water over and you can enjoy your date."

"Thanks man," he says with a nod, turning his attention fully to Juliet. He spares a brief sideways glance at Alex, before deciding he doesn't care what the server thinks and offering his hand across the table in a casual gesture. "Halloween's always a weird night," he comments vaguely.

Juliet quickly takes his hand. Her hand also has blood on it.

She stares at it for a moment.

"It's my first. Never been able to celebrate it before..."

Alex fetches their water.

"I'll just be over there," he points to the bar, "give me a wave with you guys want to order. We're a bit short staffed at the moment, but I'll definitely give you priority. I'm very biased."

Eric pours them both glasses, pushes one across the table to Juliet, and snags an ice-cube from his own.

"Sorry if this is cold," he murmurs, hiding it as he covers her hand enough to use the ice-cube to clear the blood from the back of her hand. "So, what's good here?" he asks, like he isn't trying to give her something else to focus on.

Juliet closes her eyes and consentrates on the cold of the ice, helping her focus.

"Um." She opens her eyes again. "Burgers are good."

She looks down at their hands.

"You're good at this."
