"I will say whatever it takes to get through this portal. But I do have some genuine uncertainty about many features of the situation which bias me even more strongly than usual to a policy of instrumental honesty."

"Okay. ... And given that I know you know we're in a precognition right now, would you care to blow me away with any predictions regarding your behavior in future iterations thereof?"

"If you yourself run retrials of this interaction and do not deliberately attempt to throw me off I will take less than five minutes to conclude that it is best not to lie to you."

She can practically hear Jeanne in her head: I bet you say that to all the pretty doms. (Followed by a lengthy imagined breakdown over what constitutes deliberately throwing someone off, of course. Thank you, Imaginary Jeanne.)

"Noted. Thank you, it's been interesting, I look forward to doing this again."

The robot dips in a bow-like motion.

Cory waves after her, humming softly.

Zari heads off back to, and then through, the portal.

"Well?" asks the precog, with a fascinated light in his eyes that undermines his affected sleepy disinterest.

"I'm going to want to talk to the AI through one of the local robots," she reports, "and I'll want the following information..."

There's a good amount of it.

"...write that down if you have to but for the love of pete don't put it on a computer, don't even get it in view of a camera if you can help it, I don't think it can manage to hack anything that way but it would be very stupid to take that risk. And don't tell me yet about any of it, I have to presume that that last bit was angling to get me specifically to come back, and the obvious reason to do that is if it thinks it can sneak a message to itself somewhere in there, and I don't see how but I'm not going to try and outsmart a superintelligence."

"And what exactly am I supposed to tell you, when you ask?"

"Just that I want to run a couple more iterations naïvely before I learn anything I can't unlearn."

And so, an hour and a half earlier:

"It goes like this: you go through the portal, and you come back about an hour later, you seem fine, and you tell me some things but you say not to give you the details until you've given it another few tries without them."

"I see. Nothing else?"

"No -- oh, but you can have the message from your sister, I assume, that was before you went through..." He repeats it.

"...well. That does make more sense, then." Sigh. "I really wish I were not currently running this more or less on my own. But bringing any kind of significant force into it just introduces more points of failure right now, I think."

Shrug. "Your call. Do you want me to run it again?"

"Yes please."

And so, hypothetically...

...Zari heads through the portal towards O'Leary's again-for-the-first-time.

There is a Martian on a pony in a paddock!

So there is!

"Hello! I'm hoping to speak to Sing, how does one go about doing that?"

"Uh, you don't. - unless you're Jeanne's sister? That might be special."

"I am! Will you get in trouble if you help me talk to Sing?"

"No, that's not really how anything works anymore, pretty wild. I can just let Angelette tell it about you, I woulda done that before but she was all, shhhhhh, paranoia."

"Sounds like her. Yes, please do."

"Angelette says Sing's gonna, like, possess a robot."

A cylinder approaches.
