Z and Edie cheesy vampire romance

Mid-year transfers are a pain, but a botanist's work is never done, and Mama had received an extraordinarily tempting offer, so here we are. Being the rich couple's daughter doesn't make things as much easier as it ought, really, what with people gossiping and the "friendly" people who could at least make a fucking effort to pretend they didn't just want to go fishing in her parents' wallet, seriously.

She strides into Anatomy class irked with the world in general and scans the room for somewhere tolerable to sit.

Well, there's a guy in the back corner of class with a conspicuously empty desk next to him. Try him?

That works.

She stalks to the back, puts her books down on the desk with a thud, turns to him and says, "Hi, I'm the shiny rich new girl," a tad passive-aggressively.

He squints, tilts his head, and shrugs.

"You don't look shiny to me."

He is way too amused with himself.

"Metaphorical shininess."

"From how my parents have been going about yours I'd swear it was literal."

She snorts. "Hah. There is that, high school social climbing isn't nearly as bad as the adult version."

He nods.

"It's pretty gross."

He holds his hand out.

"I'm Z, and probably not supposed to talk to you. Cool meeting you."

"I'm Edie. Why aren't you supposed to talk to me and who should I terrify over it?" She shakes his hand.

"Edie. Nice. I think the parents think I'm going to scare you off with, I don't know, my terrifying gothy fashion sense or something."

"You have an excellent fashion sense if this is a typical example."

He seems as surprised as he is pleased.

"Really? Thanks. Nobody around here really gets it."

"Enh. Small-town people, small-town tastes."

He nods.

"Sorry you got stuck here too."

"Enh, I'll cope. I can judge people anywhere."

Pfft.

"Pretty good hobby to have in this place."

"It's less a hobby and more a reflex, really."

"Is that a rich kid thing or just a you thing?"

"Just a me thing. I don't judge people for not having money, that would be incredibly dickish."

Nod.

"I mean, doesn't have to be about money to be a rich kid thing. But I get it."

"If it were a rich kid thing it would probably be dickish one way or another."

Snort.

"Yeah, probably."

The bell rings, and a final few kids file into the classroom.

Edie refrains from judging them for their tardiness. "Congratulations on managing to acquire cool clothes if your parents don't approve."

"The internet is an amazing place, and shipping things to your next-door neighbor's house is an amazing thing."

The teacher begins the usual pre-class shushing, and reluctantly, he turns to the front.

"Goodness," she murmurs, too quiet for anyone else to hear. "That's a lot of trouble to have to go to."

He also speaks quietly, without turning his head.

"Eh, I just don't like when they open my stuff."
