"I don't know why you think it's going to be so traumatic."

"I don't know for sure. Maybe it won't like you much and it'll be fine."

"Or it absolutely loves me, is sad for a week, then gets over it."

"Maybe."

When they get to the store, the Master will try to buy one of the TMs the book said the Abra could learn.

They have a few in stock, though not all of them - Hidden Power, Sunny Day, Return, Thunder Wave.

He buys Hidden Power.

"Do you want your Pokémon scanned for a Hidden Power type or would you rather it be a surprise?" asks the shopkeeper, ringing him up.

"I want to know."

There is some arcane technological doodad and: "It's Dragon type! Congratulations."

He grins.

The Master spends the next few days training when he can and wandering when he can't.

He trains the Abra to fight, mostly managing to get into battles he at least has a chance of winning.

He also trains the Abra to steal, teaching it the names of coins and rings and watches and jewelry and pointing out likely targets. He rewards it generously with treats most of the time.

The Abra becomes quite the acquisitive little creature. He gets a couple comments that normally it's not Abra you see doing that sort of thing for their owners. He gets spare change, pretty rocks, a lost rhinestone.

If he wants anything bigger ticket he'd have to let the Abra loose in a store, like this jewelry shop with a gold-and-pearl brooch prominently displayed in the window.

No one seems to be watching.

He lets the Abra out and directs it towards the brooch.

The Abra approaches it and picks it up off the velvet and brings it back.

He tucks it away and tries to slip out the door.

He gets down the block!

And then he is cornered by two cops, one who's dismounting an Arcanine and the other releasing a Noctowl behind the Master to cut off his escape route. "Hold it!" says the one with the Arcanine.

He'll tell the Abra to attack the Noctowl and then he will attempt to jump over the Arcanine.

The Noctowl is not impressed with the Abra's attack. It attacks back, and the Abra is staggered.

The Arcanine casually bats the Master down to the street with one paw. It's insanely strong, even for its massive size.

"You are under arrest," says the one with the Arcanine.

"You've got the wrong man."

"Save it for the station," says the officer.

"And even if that's true you're not supposed to attack officers' 'mon," says his partner.

He feigns affront.

"Attack? It was just being friendly!"

"Save it for the station."

He is cuffed. They take his Pokéball and return his Abra.

He doesn't fight them.

And he is brought to the station and patted down for the brooch.

They will find the brooch as well as many, many other things.
