"I'm not a Pokémon."

"How do you know? You could be."

The boy laughs.

"We should get going, want to hit the next village before dark."

"Sure."

Everyone starts walking.

"I'm Isao by the way," the boy says.

"Mei."

"Kotori."

"Promise."

"I've never heard those names before," Isao says.

"I bet their parents were high," Mei says.

"It's self-chosen."

Mei has the decency to look a little embarrassed.

"Umm, so, you guys visiting family?" Isao asks.

"Business. The offer's almost too good to be true, but if it is, it's more than worth the trek."

"I'm along for tourism!"

"Didn't get your fill during your pilgrimage?" Isao asks.

"My what?"

"You know your, pilgrimage, journey, year apart? You did have one, right?" he sounds a little nervous.

"That'd explain the lack of pokemon," Mei mutters.

"Obviously. We call it something else."

"What?" Kotori asks.

"The, um, great endeavor."

"You're supposed to acquire Pokémon then?"

Isao nods.

"I have no idea how you didn't. I was assuming you sold them after."

"I have never found it difficult to avoid acquiring Pokémon."

"I guess that could work, if you stayed on the main roads," Isao says.

"But, then what's the point! You can't test yourself like that," Kotori says.

"How many pokemon did you catch?"

"We actually just started," Isao says.

"I caught one!" Kotori says.

She holds out a white and red spherical object. It opens.

An animals appears. It's similar to a rat with dark purple fur and two large protruding teeth.

It leaps at Kotori and then squeals loudly, collapsing to the ground. It twitches a few times, still squealing softly.

"She hasn't trained it yet," Mei says.

"I only caught it yesterday! I haven't had time."

"...what happened to it?"
