strix aren't monsters
so Blai might as well meet one
Permalink Mark Unread

In the middle of the street, there is a woman who could be mistaken for an elf by her eyes and ears, if it weren't for her feet, nose, and bigass wings. She is purchasing food from a street vendor, which the vendor would probably object to more if it weren't for the fact that Liushna is still deeply inexperienced with money and doesn't realize that a silver coin is overpaying.

That is some kind of bird monster. Or it's a strix. Blai has never actually seen a strix before, but he is now alive to the possibility that a given bird-monster-looking-thing is possibly a strix, which is not a monster, and is of a kind with those friendly at Pezzack.

"Perhaps you do not have any change," he says to the street vendor, counting out ten copper for the silver.

There is a smaller coin than the silver??? Money is so complicated!

"Thank," she says to the man with the copper coins. "New to coins."

Permalink Mark Unread

She spoke civilly and did not obviously attempt to enchant him or anything, points toward 'strix' and not 'monster'. Though possibly only points she was already awarded for making a licit purchase in the first place. "Paper money was a way to pass pieces of souls around, so it is meant to be replaced with coinage as quickly as possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"--Oh, no, new to money. Itarii not use it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- Itary, I see. I thought you were a strix." He takes a couple of steps back. "The legal code is in substantial flux right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Strix word for Itarii like slips word for halflings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, it's for short? I see. I don't think the longer word is well known."

Permalink Mark Unread

For short? ...She's not going to have this conversation for the first time with a helpful stranger who doesn't seem to mean anything by it.

"Many people Cheliax not know, seeming." Shrug. "Not most important thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have heard that your people were helpful in Pezzack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get rid of bad men," she says firmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I hear, yes. Are you - a delegate? Were the strix asked to send one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not ask, send anyway. Was elected. Itarii live in Cheliax. Is important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you planning to ask for at the convention?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Peace. Not at peace with bad men of Asmodeus. Asmodeus men come on mountains, men die. Sometimes Itarii also die. Now bad men gone. New men, good men? Not know for sure. Know people in Pezzack, some, but Pezzack not human queen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know the person Pezzack elected - I assume they're large enough to send someone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not know who. But someone, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know anyone here, do you have a place to stay? A lot of the temples are being turned over to new gods; if there's one you favor you could seek a room there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"On roof of halfling building."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a halfling building?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Halflling delegate rent house for other halfling delegates. Let me on roof because also not human."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, do nonhumans prefer to keep away from humans - I don't mean to trouble you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not troubling. Many humans rude to halflings and Itarii. Not you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've neglected to introduce myself. Select Blai Artigas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Liushna of Windwhip tribe! What is Select?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It means I'm a cleric of Iomedae. Different gods' clerics have different titles. Chosen is the generic if you don't know the one for the particular god, or know that someone is a cleric but not of whom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Understand. Itarii only say cleric."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which gods are you partial to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Itarii not worship gods, but spend lots time outside in the world, so have clerics of Gozreh anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure if Gozreh's people have claimed a building, or I'd direct you to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I not cleric. I--not know word in Chelish. Shalyeen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does a shallene do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shalyeen cast from cunning and have small animal friend and--not know word again--magic thing, not spell, can do many many times in day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wizards cast from cunning and have animal friends and cast cantrips."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Cantrip' is smallest spell, yes? Very very good spell for cleaning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Wizards get that one and clerics don't." Blai can hang, and catch, Prestidigitation, but he can barely get mud off his boots or disguise the hideous oversaltiness of ration pork with it. What he can do with it is make chess pieces. He practices that a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thing-don't-know-Chelish-word other thing not spell. And Shalyene not do clean spell," she sighs. "Sorcerer get sometimes, more word I don't know Imazi get sometimes, Shalyene not get."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know a kind of caster that casts from cunning, isn't some kind of sorcerer, and doesn't get Prestidigitation. But there are lots of things I don't know and someone might have the word for it. I wonder if there's a Nethysian temple now..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Itarii not have wizard, maybe Itarii have something humans not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. If you really wanted to find out I'd recommend looking for a temple of Nethys. He's the god of magic in general."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not know gods much," she admits. "How find temple Nethys?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess if there is one, it would be one of the old Asmodean temples that isn't on anyone's circuit to create water for, but without a map that doesn't help very much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not know Asmodean temples either. Heard someone set on fire Asmodean temple in Pezzack, but lots of buildings on fire then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Westcrown is a large city, so there were a lot of small temples and a few big ones, and most of them were not set on fire."

Permalink Mark Unread

Liushna isn't sure temples of Asmodeus not being on fire is a good thing, but it's probably a worthwhile tradeoff for other buildings not being on fire.

"Westcrown very very big!" she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is. It's been good to meet you; if you need a cleric for anything my temple is that one with the sword on the spire." Point.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Will remember! Good meet you!”
