Scott seems displeased with the state of the car. He takes the mint, whispering a thank you. He glances around, appraising it.

"Do you need a new car? I could probably talk one of the guys into helping me build one. I'm alright with my hands, but Jacob is a really good mechanic."

Ryou starts the car. It accelerates smoothly and makes almost no sound.
"Do not judge it by its shell. Its insides don't need fixing."

"...Okay. As long as you don't mind."

He pats his seat as if to confirm her claim.

"So, uh, if I tell my...crew, that you're going to be in town for a while, they'll probably leave you alone. And they'll protect you, if you want! So, if I tell them that, what will you do?"

"Tell me about them first."

"I can't say exactly what's going on with us. Sam, Sam Uley, he's a decent guy and some of the other guys really need his help. I needed his help. If I tell Sam that you're important to me, he'll explain to you some of our secrets. Until then, I can tell you that they just want to keep the tribe and the town safe."

Scott leans back, his head hitting the headrest with surprising force.

"Sorry," he mumbles. "I can't explain everything, and I don't know where the line is. If you want to know more, you have to talk to Sam."

"And why in the world would I be important to you?"

"You're important."

"That is not helpful."

"Sorry. I want to help you, I just don't know what I should say. You're...you're my imprint, which means Sam won't mind if I tell you things I can't tell other people. Me and the other guys at La Push, recently we became part of something big. You can be part of it too, if you want. Because the legends, they're true."

Scott turns fully in his seat to face her.

"What do you know so far? I'll do what I can to explain."

"Too many people go missing for a town this small."

"Forks used to be safer. This time last year it was quiet, and a little too rainy, but nothing too weird. Now, things are different. We have some visitors. They look kind of like you, but some of us can tell the difference."

He sniffs the air.

"You really don't need a new car? It'll take time, and some money for parts, but I could figure something out."

"What would it do that this one can't?"

"I don't know, I just thought it would be nice to have a car that was more comfortable for you. You seem fine with this one, I don't want to push, we barely just met."

"You're not a vampire, but you are the reason they are frightened."

"What, you mean the townspeople? They're afraid because of us, yeah, but they aren't safe without us, the cold ones would never have left this town alone if we hadn't fought them. There's only one of them left, now. She took off. Some of the others want to hunt her down, but...well, she'll probably leave everyone alone, now."

"Who called them vampires?"

"That is what they call themselves."

"Who did you talk to? Anyone near the town? Did they hurt you?"

"More than one. I can protect myself. I have propane and a lighter and a few of their teeth."

"I guess you can. I shouldn't have doubted you."

He takes a deep breath.

"You said you've heard the legends, right? So I won't try to remember all the details. Basically, our tribe, for a while now, has had shapeshifter genes. When vampires come to town, when they get close enough that we can smell them, they activate. I never thought genes worked like that. I'm not a biologist, but I'm pretty sure it's just magic. It lets us change, become stronger, and faster. Our senses our heightened, our reflexes are better. But what's important is that we're meant to fight them, and protect humans, especially the Quileutes who can't activate."

"But you only started fighting them recently."

"Not that recently. We're learning. We took care," slight wince, "of their leader, and the other two left to avoid having to fight us. We'll get better."

"You don't hunt them?"

"Paul wants the pack to go further out, looking for them, but Sam thinks we should focus on defending ourselves and not catching any more attention. I think he's right. If we make it clear that they're not welcome here, they'll leave us alone."

"That may be wise. Rumors of you are spreading, but no one cares enough to look. Increasing your range might change that."
