Ryou leans back against the tree. She has been still for long enough that a bird had settled on the branch next to her. This slight movement is enough to startle it away.

This is her third day staking out the reservation. So far, she's seen nothing unusual, but that isn't a surprise. For magic to go so unnoticed, it would have to be very good at hiding.

Walking along the beach is a young man in a loose hoodie, hands in his pockets. He whistles quietly to himself as he walks. He can't be less than thirty feet away from her when he turns his head sharply, his eyes following the bird.

His hands are in front of him, not quite curled into fists. He drops them to his side and continues walking, oblivious to her presence.

Ryou studies him. Nothing about him immediately strikes her as unusual. He is perhaps slightly more fit than the average teenager.

There is probably nothing unusual about this boy at all. He is fit, but so are the other Quileute men his age. He's hardly exceptional on the reservation.

He draws closer, and when he finally spots her, waves cautiously. "Hey, everything okay? People usually don't come out to the beach on a day like this."

She nods.
"Enjoying the quiet."

(I worship the ground you walk on)

"I'm glad," he says, sounding amused. His gaze is intense, his eyes warm. His shoulders relax and Ryou realizes that he was readying himself for a fight.

"What do you- are you looking for something? We really don't have much to do in Forks."

"Nothing in particular. It's been a while since I've seen a beach."
Why was he preparing to fight and why did he stop? Could her albinism resemble vampirism to someone who has only heard descriptions? Is any stranger a threat?

"Yeah, that makes sense," he says, backing away slightly, eyes still fixed on her face. "If you want to be left alone, I mean, I can go."

"Don't leave on my account."

Don't say it don't say it they'll never forgive you.

They're not your pack. He's not your alpha.

Don't say it, you have no right, you'll put everyone at risk-

"The ones on the reservation- the Quileutes-Sam wouldn't, Jared listens, but Paul- he has a temper, and if he didn't check first...it might not be safe for you. They might get confused, if they're not paying attention to your smell-not that I've been smelling you. Just you know, metaphorically. Your scent..."

"They would attack me?"

"No, they're all really good guys, they would never hurt someone like you. It's just...they're sort of different, you know? From other people in town. We're sort of different. I haven't lived on the rez since my mom and dad split up, but I'm still a Quileute." He puts his hands in his pockets, looking out over the water. "Have you heard the stories?"

Ryou slides out of the tree and walks over to stand next to him.
"I have. I assumed they were just that, stories."

"Some of them, yeah. If this was a normal town with a normal tribe, then yeah, just stories. But we're not normal. If you want that, you should visit someplace else."

He rubs his forehead, as though trying to manage a headache.

"Can I ask you a question?"

(your wish is my command)

Ryou nods.

Slight grimace.

"No, actually, I guess I can't." He sighs. "I can't really say anything against them, you know. They just want to keep everyone safe. I want that too. But you just showed up here and I don't know what you know and who knows you're here and- Sam won't say anything if I just bring you to them and ask them to protect you."

(I will defend you with my life)

"Do you want me to do that?"

Ryou raises an eyebrow.
"You want to bring me to the people who would attack me on sight?"

"They won't, they couldn't, I'll tell Sam who you are and they'll know you're not one of the cold ones, they'll have to understand, they know why I need you safe."

He swallows. "But you want to be left alone, don't you. They wouldn't, I wouldn't. I can't."

"Breathe," Ryou says calmly.

He chuckles nervously. "See? They'll know right away, if you come home. Emily hated it at first. I don't know how she ever came around to it. I'm sorry, I don't know how much I can explain...Sam told us not to tell anyone. But they won't hurt you, not when-they won't hurt you."

"That is good to hear. Come into town with me? I've been wanting to try the local coffee shop."

"Yeah, sure. Um, we might have to get a ride, I came here from the reservation, and I'd rather not go back for my car. I don't want them to know about you just yet. I don't get to keep much from them."

"I have a car."

"Okay." He follows her to the car, looking displeased that he can't hold the door for her.

"So why did you come to town? It's kind of dreary here, if you're used to somewhere warmer. Maybe you aren't? I kind of miss the sun."

"The sun and I do not get along."

Ryou's car is old and dirty. It seems to be the opposite of eye catching. Inside it is clean and Ryou offers Scott a mint.
