Salmons and Carmines in Azurite

Okay, so maybe she'd gone a bit too far. Maybe that boy didn't deserve the psychological torment. But he was really annoying and-

No. Okay. Okay. New town. New people. Small town which is terrible like ugh but fine, she'll deal, they'd need a new place anyway. Her mother got a job at the library, they arrived on Thursday, and she was enrolled but like, who starts school on a Thursday? Not she. She starts on Monday. So, Monday morning, bright an early, she has class.

...um. What's her first class?

Permalink Mark Unread

She has bio! It's not, however, super clear where the biology classrooms are, nor even where the whole of the science block is, and while the school isn't huge, she might like to ask someone for directions. Seeing as she wasn't given a map.

There are quite a lot of people to pick from. There's a group of jock-type characters including at least one rather attractive male, there's a group of girls who seem quite gossipy and probably have rather too much makeup on, there's a few assorted less-cliquey people dotted around the place – like that group of about eight under a tree – and there's a group of (actually seemingly) chic girls!

Most of them seem nice enough – none of them are actively glaring, at least, though a couple look to be in a bad mood, probably just because of school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, why not the rather attractive male, rather attractive people aren't by default bad people no matter what High School movies will tell you. She's proof of this.

(Why no she isn't vain at all.)

"Hello! I'm new." As if it wasn't obvious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, hi," he says. "I'm Theo."

The other jock-ish people continue talking amongst themselves, mostly, though a couple say hi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, will any kind soul show me around and more specifically where Bio is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, sure – I've got bio first too."

He moves away from the wall that he was standing against and starts walking bio-wards. "When'd you move here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Last Thursday. I've been in big cities almost all my life so I have no idea what there is to... do here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs a bit. "Yeah, not that much really – fortunately it's not like we're that far from a bigger place, so it only takes like twenty minutes if you want to find something more to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she has something more to do right there...

...probably best not to flirt with her tour guide. At least until she knows the place better.

"Yeah, fair enough. Are you a junior, too, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I am!" He tilts his head. "Any particular reason you moved in May?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mother switched jobs," she shrugs. Which is entirely true, it's just not the answer to his question.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. And then they are at the biology classrooms! "If you're a junior and you have bio now, I'm pretty sure you're in my class!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless there are other sessions, yes," she nods. "So, what would you want to be told about the school and the town if you were new?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, hm." He thinks for a couple of moments, then says, "It's very small, but you already knew that. … We have a nice festival thing in the summer for plants and things? Seriously, this town is just boring, you're better off pretending you're literally in the middle of nowhere and just twenty minutes away from something fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that's just depressing. And patently untrue, there are at least people, and people are interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well yeah, there are people who are interesting, but there aren't really interesting activities to do around here that you don't just get anywhere you have people – like, you can go to a friend's house still, obviously, not like that changes in a small town, but there's nothing else to do."

And the bell's about to go so Theo walks into the bio classroom! They indeed are in the same class. "Oh, by the way, there's no seating plan or anything – usually we swap partners in different sessions so," he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So do you mind if I sit with you? Partnering with helpful, pretty people sounds like the way to go for the first class."

Oops.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. "Yeah, that's fine."

So he takes a seat at one of the benches.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she takes a seat with him!

"Anyway, what I meant was that now that I'm here it'd be useful if I, like, knew more about the people, about the social dynamics, clubs, or where stuff is." She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, um, groups are basically what you saw outside? Like, there's a bit more detail, and I don't think you'll have it all memorized but, yeah, basically like that. Clubs: not many? There's a group of us who get together and do soccer every so often, there's one for Latin, I think? Maybe a chess thing too, not sure. Stuff…" Theo looks over at the door as the teacher enters the classroom and just leaves it at, "Yeah, stuff is kinda difficult to sum up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I suppose I'm gonna have to figure it out as I go along."

Permalink Mark Unread

And class starts! They're doing various organelles in plant cells today. Vacuoles, cell wall, that sort of thing, labelling diagrams and stuff. Apparently they're not doing a practical today.

The teacher doesn't keep the classroom silent, so Theo's willing to talk to Sadde quietly if she so desires.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once she notices this, she so desires!

"I realized I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Sadde."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you," he says. "Theo, in case you'd forgotten."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hadn't. It's a nice name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," he responds, smiling. "Yours is… unique."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A.k.a. 'weird.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "A little bit but it doesn't sound bad or anything, so it's not weird in a bad way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad you think so, I'm all weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem pretty normal so far," he says. "Then again, I haven't really known you for long."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm so disappointed in myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really seem it," he says mildly. "Is there anything particularly weird that you care to share?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm... Big genderfluid shapeshifting nerd."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shapeshifting nerd?" He laughs a bit. "Is that… you're really into the idea of shapeshifting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, I'm magic, you see. When I feel like a boy I look like a boy and vice-versa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right," he agrees. "Sounds cool. So you were serious about the genderfluid part?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. And that's just the obviously weird part, there are some other subtler weird parts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's definitely different," he says, "but it's not weird in a bad way." He smiles a bit. "Are you trying to provide examples of weird in a bad way or just weird?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just weird, I'm pretty sure I'm not bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good."

Biology, biology, such fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whee, biology. Stealing glances from the cute boy sitting next to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't seem to react to the stolen glances!

But then, eventually, bio must come to an end. It indeed does so. "What do you have next?" asks Theo. "I've got English but I can probably walk you over wherever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, English, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder how many classes we share," he says, packing his stuff away and picking up his bag. "Anyway! I can show you over there too, since we're going the same place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, aren't you a gentleman," she laughs, picking up her own backpack and following him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to English they go! And then into the classroom. Theo sits in his regular spot – next to one of the other jocks that Sadde would have seen him with earlier – and smiles at Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde will find the nearest empty seat and smile at him, too.

(Gosh, he's so pretty, she's rethinking her plan of not seducing him on the first day.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He is rather attractive! Not, like, ridiculously, but definitely quite. However, he doesn't seem to hear her internal monologue, nor respond to it, so he doesn't offer any comment on whether she should attempt to seduce him!

English starts. It's very fun, very fun indeed. Lots of poetry today. Super fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a shame. She'll just have to guess.

English! Woo! She won't sleep through the class, and will try to not die of boredom!

Permalink Mark Unread

That must be such a hardship! Congratulations to her for succeeding. Then class ends and Theo packs his stuff away and he's probably available to show Sadde where to go next!

Permalink Mark Unread

Such a hardship. And after this she has Geography!

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo: has history.

Fortunately, the 'humanities' classes are near to each other so he's able to show her to Geography and then disappear off to History. Plus it's not like it's a huge school, so he'd probably be able to do that even if they weren't right next to each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such a gentleman.

But she'll see if she can socialize with someone other than Theo, now that she's going to a Theoless class.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can! There are various seats available in the class, and most actually seem to have people sitting near them who seem somewhat friendly – apparently there are quite a few nice people in this town.

For example, there's a guy from one of the less-cliquey groups from earlier (just in case she's keeping track)! He's already sitting at a desk and talking to the person next to him when Sadde enters the room, but there's a space on the other side of him, if she wishes to take it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, friendly people is a thing that bodes well, maybe she'll be able to even stay until she graduates in this school!

She takes the seat next to that guy but doesn't intrude, since he's already talking to someone.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles at her when she sits down, finishes off his conversation – only a few more sentences, it would seem – and then introduces himself to her. "Hey! You're new, right? I'm Matt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you! I'm Sadde."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enjoying your new surroundings?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could say so," she says, grinning at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins back. "Cool. So where are you from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hoo, boy, that's a complicated question. I was born in a town smaller than even Ashbane, but my mom divorced my father" (not 'my dad') "when I was like four, then we moved to Charlotte, and now we're here."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Sounds… uh, potentially exciting?"

The teacher comes into the classroom! Doesn't tell people to quiet down just yet, since she's setting things up, but she is now present.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose that's a way to see it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs and gets out his notebook and a pen, and then apparently he has rather good timing because the teacher tells them all to be quiet so class can start.

Geography, woo! Rivers and… stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Stuff.

Then lunch, probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is indeed lunch, yes!

Matt shows her in the direction of the cafeteria – it's kinda hard to miss everyone going in a similar direction, but still – and then he grabs some food and sits down with the group of assorted less-cliquey people. It looks like she can join him, if she so wishes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo is also in the cafeteria, if she happens to look around. He seems like he'll be making his way over to the jock group in a few moments, but right now he's grabbing some food of his own.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmm choices, choices...

She'll go with the jocks first, because she simply cannot resist tempting fate. She gives Matt a small wave and goes grab some food to then join Theo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo notices her coming over and moves over to make a space for her! So long as she's, you know, okay sitting between two jocks. "Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

Is she okay sitting between two hot boys who practice sports.

"Hello!" She grins at the other jock, too. "Haven't introduced! I'm Sadde. I'm also new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cody," he says, smiling back at her. "You into any sports?"

That's probably his go-to topic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Closest thing to sports I practice is running, and not, like, track team running."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Sounds fun anyway. I'm pretty into running – pretty sure Theo is too?"

Theo also shrugs! "I mean, I jog?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Habitually? I could join you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah – usually in the evenings, daily. I'm up for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool! And, evenings? Nothing to do around here at night, no clubs or whatever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have, uh, one club?" he says. "It's pretty small and people usually just throw parties and things instead or go to one of the bigger towns or something, though."

Cody makes some sort of affirmative grunting noise, then says, "The club's not too bad though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, see, there isn't literally nothing to do here, you misled me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hyperbole?" he tries. "There's practically very little but still some– so yeah okay there's some stuff." He laughs a bit. "Here, I've told you about the stuff now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She squints at him, then turns to Cody. "Is he telling the truth or is he hiding some secret Disney park somewhere?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Cody laughs. "No Disney park. There's a regular park, though."

Theo smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is presumably where you jog?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, through the park sometimes and around town a bit other times, vary it a little so it doesn't get too repetitive, listen to music, that sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, actually, yeah!" He smiles. And then takes a bite of his food, since, lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Food and lunch! Good thinking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You into any other stuff?" asks Cody after a few moments. "Other than running."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As far as sports go? Not really. But other than that I really like reading, and walking around aimlessly, and getting to know people, and singing, and seeing how blatant I have to be with my flirting before its target can realize I am in fact flirting with them."

Permalink Mark Unread

He raises an eyebrow. "Sounds fun. What's the record so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't kept track. Since I arrived here I'm zero for one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone already noticed you?" He laughs a bit. "Do you just flirt with, like, everyone you meet on the first day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not everyone, just the people I find immediately cute. I get around to everyone else by the end of the first week, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles at her and– maybe looks her over a little. "Sounds like an exciting life you live."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, if he will look her over a little, she will look him over a little, too. "Not very exciting, I don't think. Just regularly exciting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Had any luck with that shapeshifting thing?" asks Theo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cody looks inquisitive!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Luck? In doing what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo shrugs. "You said you were a shapeshifting nerd, right? Had any luck finding more out about the shapeshifting, is what I meant."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cody: is confused. He thinks he's missing a joke or something, so he'll just chat with some other guys for a sec.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, I meant I am a nerd who shapeshifts, not a nerd about shapeshifting." She turns to Cody and says: "I told him I was a genderfluid shapeshifting nerd earlier, and that when I am feeling like a boy I'm shaped like a boy and when I'm feeling like a girl I'm shaped like a girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," says Cody. "Okay." Then, if that's all, he turns back to the other guys.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right, I thought you meant you were a shapeshifting nerd who was also a nerd about shapeshifting." He shrugs. Then he smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles—telling people that and then having them not believe it is kinda fun—then looks at Theo. "Well, I haven't been able to figure it out over the years, so by now I only have the token effort left in me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still sounds like it'd be cool to have, but if it's limited to changing sex when you feel a different gender, I don't think it'd apply to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, it's just really hard and fiddly so I mostly use it for gender. It has something to do with proprioception in a way I haven't been able to hack yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Proprioception? I thought that was just for the positioning of your body parts in relation to you, but, like, I'm guessing you mean something like phantom limb? It seems like it'd be difficult to get that detailed enough to make it care about… other changes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, something like phantom limb. At least when it comes to gender it seems to be the case that dysphoria very easily triggers it, so it's sort of a matter of... feeling like I should be shaped some way or another before I actually get to do it. It's hard to force body dysphoria."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you thought about whether it does healing? Like, presumably your body doesn't expect to be damaged, so if it were, it'd maybe change back from that?"

Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't do healing as far as I've been able to determine, it's pretty hard for me to convince myself I'm not hurt when I am in fact feeling pain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Okay, that makes sense. I was sort of imagining – not that I expect this is a good idea or anything – how it would react if you, um, lost a piece. Since, you know it should be there because it's a part of you, like, phantom limb syndrome or whatever, but you also know that you've been hurt and it therefore isn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But phantom limb syndrome is in fact a thing, and some scientists theorize that it's related to body dysphoria, so I wouldn't be surprised if it fixed that... But I really don't care to test it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I wouldn't expect you to." Nom. "So what's this for? A story you're writing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sadde has been intermittently eating in spite of the narration's lack of mention of same.)

"Oh, it's just true. You'll see when I'm actually a boy."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Okay then."

After a few moments, "Got any favorite subjects?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Math, mostly! Science in general, I am terrible at languages and good at English but actual English class bores me."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I'm pretty good at languages, but yeah, I like math and science too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything you don't particularly like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. History can get a bit tedious with, remembering dates and stuff? Geography can be a bit… um, 'colorful'? Meaning 'color in this picture, honestly, this is good classwork', which is kinda, not great." He thinks a bit more. "Um, I'm not great at art?" He shrugs. "I like lots of things, and the things I don't like so much I try to do well anyway, and then like, art I dropped so I don't have to do that anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I am absolutely terrible at art. I think I'd like being a historian, but studying history I don't. It's made too neat."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, eats a bit more of his food, and then he's done. "Hobbies? Oh, reading you said – any books in particular? Specific genres?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Behavioral psychology, economics, math, physics, biology, sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, sometimes your random bad romance with vampires and attractive shirtless people on the cover. How about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mainly sci-fi and fantasy, in terms of fiction – for nonfiction it's usually like Wikipedia and various online sources and articles instead of, like, actual physical books about the stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty, friendly, and smart, my, aren't you interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, that is a rather pretty smile he has there, isn't it? "Thanks," he says. "You seem rather interesting too."

It seems like he's being friendly more than actually flirting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, and she has an inkling she knows why. Well. She'll try it at a more appropriate time. For now, she can maybe flirt with Cody who was more obviously interested.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cody in fact was more obviously interested, yes. He's very willing to continue to be obviously interested, possibly for the rest of lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then maybe Sadde will manage to get asked out by him before the end of lunch, while still trying not to neglect Theo and make it look like she's only interested in flirting with him. She's not, he seems nice, so she'll try to be friendly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nah, it's fine, Theo gets that the two of them are hitting it off and there are other people at the table that he can talk to while they're doing so!

(And yes, Sadde could totally be asked out before the end of lunch – how's ice cream? They apparently do have an ice cream parlor in town!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ice cream sounds like a great idea! She definitely does not remark about how kissing after eating ice cream feels really nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course she doesn't. He therefore doesn't mention just how they'll have to demonstrated that with, like, first-hand experience and stuff.

And then lunch is over!

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo has Geography and Sadde has Government! Theo's willing to show her to whatever classroom she's got Government in – it says on the timetable – and then he'll leave her and go to Geography.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after Government/Geography: gym!

Permalink Mark Unread

Gym! Hopefully Sadde brought her gym stuff and is prepared for a fun class of… tennis and/or badminton! Apparently that's what they're doing today. Taking advantage of the tennis courts to play 'approximately tennis-like sports'.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde did bring her gym stuff! She is not very good and not very bad at playing! She is good at running though so this might help.

Permalink Mark Unread

This indeed does help! And the other people playing with her can give her pointers on it, possibly – especially if she's playing with Theo, he's pretty good at tennis – and then class will be over.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after class: ice cream with Cody!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ice cream with Cody indeed! It goes relatively well, or at least he thinks it does, and he's very charming.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's very charming as well! Hopefully charming enough to actually maybe experiment with how the temperature of something you just ate affects kissing?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! They are both charming enough for this to occur.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good! Then this will occur a lot! And then they will go to their respective homes having exchanged phone numbers and facebooks, and the next day—

Permalink Mark Unread

—there will be class again.

Permalink Mark Unread

There will be! And in Sadde's first class of the day, math, is this girl sitting approximately in the middle of the room, chatting to a friendly-looking brunette sitting next to her. When she notices Sadde, she smiles and waves. There is, Sadde might notice, an empty seat beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Sadde will take that empty seat! "Hello. I'm Sadde, I'm new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!" she says. "I noticed! How are you enjoying the place so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's pretty great! People are very friendly even if there's not a whole lot to do, and school seems okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, people are pretty nice around here, it's pretty wonderful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo enters the room! And moves Ev-wards for a place to sit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at him as he enters the room. "Hey, Sadde, you've met Theo, right? – Oh, I'm Evelyn, or Ev, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have in fact met Theo! And a couple more people, including his friend Cody, with whom I had a lovely afternoon yesterday."

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo takes a seat in front of them just as the teacher enters the room. "Hey Sadde."

Permalink Mark Unread

She frowns a little. "Oh, okay."

And then class starts! Woo, math.

Permalink Mark Unread

Math! Sadde enjoys math, it's nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is! Theo also likes math.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ev seems to get on okay. Then she has history, so she says bye to Sadde and departs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo has biology! He offers to show Sadde the way again, in case– he's. Um. "Hey, Sadde."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, there."

(Ha.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo looks at Sadde's face. A bit. And frowns a little. "So, um. You seem to have good makeup skills?" he says. "Do you have– preferred pronouns or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shapeshifting, I told you," he winks. "Pronouns is whatever you last saw me as, or they if it's too much of a hassle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," he says dubiously. "And just to clarify I'm meant to call you by Sadde, still, today, and I can refer to you by 'he' or 'they' because you look male, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Correct! I do not change my name when I am a different gender."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't know if Sadde was gender-neutral or– what, was just checking," he says. "So, um. Bio?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing. And yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not only gender-neutral, it is actually unique on Earth."

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to Bio they go, then. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I haven't heard it before," responds Theo. "Sounds sort of Spanish or something, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Maybe I should ask my mom how she came up with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo also shrugs! Then they're at the Bio classrooms and oh look they're still in the same class, that hasn't changed and oh– would Sadde like to partner with him again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Biology will start and pass by and Theo will try to not seem too visibly confused by the changes in Sadde's physical appearance and he will actually mostly succeed, and he'll make small talk when possible that Sadde will hopefully respond to in a non-awkward fashion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde is the king of non-awkward! He will also continue subtly flirting. He won't be as obvious as Cody, Theo has possibly gotten the idea by now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo… doesn't think he's going to respond to the subtle flirting right now. He's going to make small talk and maybe less-small talk and he's going to just converse and work for the rest of Biology and then it will be over and he has French, Sadde has Spanish, they're in approximately similar locations so Theo can show Sadde the way there, and then he can have an hour of French just before lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then: lunch! Who-all's there?

Permalink Mark Unread

Cody, Theo, various other jock-type characters on that table that Sadde sat at before!

Alternatively, he can go talk to Matt who's over at that other table, like lunch yesterday.

Alternatively! Ev seems to be chatting away to a large number of people over at a relatively busy table. Maybe Sadde's curious about her? Or maybe not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Yes he is! But he's gonna go talk to Matt and his friends instead.

"Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," says Matt, moving over to make space for Sadde. "How've you been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, school seems nice, people seem nice, Cody is very nice. Yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I've been fine," responds Matt. "Cody? You mean Theo's friend Cody?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we had ice cream yesterday." And made out, but he won't kiss and tell. He might kiss and hint, or kiss and innuendo, but not tell.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool," says Matt, then he introduces Sadde to the other people at the table and vice versa.

Permalink Mark Unread

Introductions! New people! Yay! Can he flirt with them? Can he flirt with Matt?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can try flirting with them! Some will be up for it – mainly the girls, not so much the guys, surprisingly enough – and Matt himself will indeed be somewhat up for it, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, yes, monosexuality, Sadde's greatest nemesis. But that's alright, he'll be a girl again eventually and be able to flirt with the other boys.

Now he has to choose, that's so terrible. Well...

"So, Matt, what's your thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My thing?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you know, what you like to do, your hobby, 'describe yourself in three sentences,' that sort of stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right, uh – I like talking to people? And sports?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking to people's great," he agrees. "What sports?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Soccer?" he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are you asking me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, as in– soccer-what-about-you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Running, mostly! I do fine in sports that require running but don't really practice any of them consistently. But with such good incentives," he says that part giving Matt a look to indicate exactly what the incentive is, "I might just start."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt smirks a bit. "Sounds like a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does the school have a soccer team?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnnope," he says. "A few of us get together and play soccer before class, though, some days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like fun, would it be okay if I joined you guys sometimes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he says. "Sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rad! I'm also joining Theo running on evenings, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool! Whereabouts? Just through town, or…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Through town probably! And the park. Parks? I wasn't clear on whether there was more than one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are a couple in the town, yeah, but you've also got a lot of trees and stuff near the edge if you want to jog there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...the edge. I am so not used to tiny towns."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt laughs a bit. "There's like – trees and stuff. And a lack of houses. And a sign that's like 'you are now leaving Ashbane' or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, very weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom. "I'm used to it," says Matt. "You know, having grown up in a small town. Not sure how I'd fare in a city."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well there's more—stuff to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's for sure," says Matt. "We have some stuff here but if you want to do anything major you kinda have to go elsewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you guys do that usually? Get together and go somewhere bigger to do stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, pretty often – I'm sure some people'd be up for it if you suggested something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I probably will! Hanging out with new people's fun. But I might have to divide that between several trips, I can't very well bring the whole school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could try," responds Matt, laughing a bit, "but yeah, I don't think it'd work too well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could start with one person," he says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could!" He smiles. "That is definitely completely possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now who should I ask, who should I ask," he muses, making a show of looking around for a likely target... before settling, of course, on Matt himself. "How about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, me?" Matt asks, making a show of looking surprised. He smiles. "I think I'd enjoy that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool! So, do you have a suggestion on what to do or should I just come up with something and cross my fingers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to go further afield, mmm, not sure, but if you just mean getting together for stuff – ice cream?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I got ice cream yesterday but I'm not about to refuse getting ice cream."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh right, you said that – uh." He thinks for a few moments. "Mmmmaybe grabbing a bite at a café? There are a couple in town…"

Permalink Mark Unread

"After school today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah?" he says. "Sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a date, then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

The rest of lunch proceeds, then afternoon classes start. English, woo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Woo, English!

Permalink Mark Unread

And after English, Theo has Geography and Sadde and Matt conveniently have History.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can Sadde sit somewhere close to Matt so he can accidentally look cute?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. He definitely can. And Matt might 'accidentally' look cute back.

(Who's kidding, he looks cute practically all the time.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Sadde's making an effort at this, he'd like it to be recognized!

Permalink Mark Unread

It definitely is being recognized! And responded to, apparently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay! Sadde is successful at definitely not flirting at all.

And then class is over and he can be more blatantly cute while directly interacting with Matt. Well, first he'll put his stuff away and sling his backpack over his shoulder, but then he'll interact. "Ready to play tour guide to the new guy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure," says Matt, grabbing his bag likewise and moving in the direction of the crowds. "Do you want me to tour you 'round the parks in addition to the café?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no it would be so terrible to spend more time with you I would not survive it," he giggles. "Yeah, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool," he says. "Sssso– tell me about yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have I used the 'genderfluid shapeshifting nerd' line on you yet? It's my go-to three-word explanation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you have, actually! It'd explain the –" he waves at his face. "You seem pretty good with makeup."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost supernaturally so, I've been told."

He thinks the whole "messes with people's minds" part is creepy but does he have fun with this kind of stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt laughs a bit. "Unfortunately I don't have a neat three-word description of myself like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I have more than three words about me if you want, maybe that could inspire you to do the same?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he says. "Might well do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Proud, vain, smart, altruistic, ambitious, dramatic, extroverted slash chatterbox, analytical, bookworm, crrrreative aaaaand that's ten."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ambitious?" he asks. "Any particular ambitions you're aiming for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Generally making the world a better place, don't have a specific plan for the time being, just seeing what resources there are to be gathered and gathering them. I might become a politician of the kind that does speeches."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Sounds interesting! I'm not really sure what I want to go into long-term, but I think I'm pretty good with people…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What kind of good with people are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People seem to like me? Typically? And lots of people don't actually listen properly – I try to make sure I do that, don't just discard what people say, that sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That suggests therapy, journalism, or maybe law."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Those sound really varied."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah but they have the property of your listening to people and them liking you being advantages."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah, I know, I was just saying," he shrugs. "Therapy might be good, I'm not sure I'm really the right type for journalism, and I– don't know about law?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the journalism thing? I'm not sure I'd be great at writing newspaper articles and things." He shrugs again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, to the law thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't done much law? Or much about law? So, uh, maybe, but like, we don't learn much about law so I don't know if it's a thing I'd want to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You haven't done much about therapy either," he points out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he says. "But I think I have a vague idea of what that's like, whereas with law, like, do you mean attorney or judge or legal… helper person, I forget the term, or what? Because I have no idea about any of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well any of those! Do you have feelings about any of them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I– don't know? The legal helper person – uh… paralegal? That might work, since I think that's mainly Englishy stuff instead of actually trying to win over… a jury or whatever? – I don't know how a lot of this works, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, fair enough, neither do I. I don't know much about politics either, but being charismatic and winning people over is fun. I'd also like to be a scientist though and being a politician who likes science in this country might be doomed from the start."

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs a bit. "Yeah, they don't seem great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, so, your turn, ten words."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Charismatic, smiley. Funny?" He thinks for a moment. "Frustrated by conflict, sometimes talkative, and apparently boring since I can't think of ten individual words to describe me?" He laughs a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't make you boring, I'm pretty sure most people can't think of ten words to describe themselves on the spot. I just happen to have a particularly easy time verbalizing my thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I'm great at that," says Matt. "I have difficulty working out what I'm even thinking? Let alone putting it into words."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you mean, you don't know what you're thinking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes it's a very vague idea on a thing and I have to poke it if I want to find out that my opinions are more than just 'not super positive, not super negative'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, so you're more like an intuitive feelings person or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe," he says. "I haven't really thought about it much."

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles. "You're really cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt smiles. "Thanks."

And then they are nearing a park! Matt points out the park. It is indeed a park.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Such a park. Wow. "D'you wanna walk in the park or just wave it by?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Walk in the park might be nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Off we go, then!" And on a whim, Sadde takes Matt's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt's okay with this. And off they do indeed go.

The park's relatively pretty. Not amazingly so, but there's a small lake and there are lots of trees and things.

It's quite peaceful.

Permalink Mark Unread

So they can continue holding hands and seeing the sights and getting to know each other while holding hands!

Permalink Mark Unread

They can! Matt seems to be enjoying himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awesome! Sadde's glad of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they've walked through the park and, "Should we go get something to eat now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure! Lead the way, cutie."

Permalink Mark Unread

So he does! And then they arrive at a nice little café that has a few other people from school in it and they can order from a selection of food – pastries, cake, fries and stuff if you happen to want dinner early, various things. Drinks are also available.

Matt offers to pay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde feels like technically he asked Matt out so he should pay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt suggests they split it? But he's not going to be pushy about paying if Sadde insists.

Permalink Mark Unread

Splitting sounds fine to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Splitting it is, then!

What does Sadde want?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde...

...kinda wants to kiss Matt.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Should they possibly get some food first and then kiss while sitting down? Or does Sadde want to kiss at the door to the café?

Permalink Mark Unread

Getting some food first and kissing while sitting down is fine by him.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fine by Matt, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde'll have a pain au chocolat (butchering the pronunciation) and a hot chocolate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt does not in fact wince at the pronunciation, because he's not great at French himself.

He gets a piece of brownie and some cola. Weird combination, but oh well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde's not one to judge.

...so can they kiss while they're waiting?

Permalink Mark Unread

They can.

They don't have to wait long, but they definitely can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee! Kissing!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's great, isn't it? But then their food is ready.

… Matt is not opposed to continued kissing.

Permalink Mark Unread

...continued kissing, then a bit of food, yes?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Obviously Matt wouldn't want his brownie to go to waste.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good! They can eat a bit and then share chocolatey kisses!

Permalink Mark Unread

They can!

Permalink Mark Unread

So many kisses!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's pretty great, isn't it?

Also food. And a drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eh, sure, food, whatever, kisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kisses indeed!

Then Matt will break away and suggest they talk about things instead of just kissing, as nice as kissing might be.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, we've been talking all afternoon, it's not like it's been just kissing!" he protests. "Not that I'm opposed to talking, quite the opposite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you wanna go back to kissing, I'm okay with that," says Matt, smirking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could alternate between kissing and talking," he suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems up for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then some more kissing for now because eeee kissing! Then talking some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then a bit more talking, and then some more kissing.

They can probably spend quite some time doing this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup! All afternoon, in fact.

Permalink Mark Unread

But then the afternoon will be over, and Matt should really be getting going.

Permalink Mark Unread

So should Sadde, probably. Bye Matt! You're cute, kissing you was great.

Permalink Mark Unread

He thought it was great likewise.

Permalink Mark Unread

The following day: school! With people!

Permalink Mark Unread

Various people! Such as Theo!

Permalink Mark Unread

And Willow!

Permalink Mark Unread

Whom he hasn't really talked to yet! ...he'll talk to her later there's plenty of time now he has to seduce Theo.

"Hello again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey there," he says, turning to face Sadde. "Still– feeling guyish, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, usually lasts two or three days, sometimes more, sometimes less."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "How's your time here, so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's going pretty alright! I am constantly surprised by how nice everyone here is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo tilts his head a bit. "People are pretty good, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, there aren't cliques and teenagers being awful? I've kinda gotten used to that and it's nice that it's not like this here. ...is it like this here and I'm just not seeing it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, it's not awful. We have groups but people aren't– really serious about sticking to them or anything, and people are typically nice. Not everyone," he shrugs, "but most."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I suppose I'm lucky—or not unlucky, at any rate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he smiles.

The bell goes. Theo and Sadde both have bio.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bio!

"So, we should probably schedule the running thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should!" he says. "Usually I do it before dinner, which I tend to have around– like, seven, seven thirty?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, like, six pee em?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, about that. … But you don't know where my house is, I bet, so– I mean, I could show you where it is tonight, we could do things this afternoon? Or I can text you directions, or we can meet up at a park or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could definitely do things this afternoon, I'm a fan of doing things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds cool," he says.

Then the teacher starts class, so Theo starts paying attention to them and less so to Sadde.

Studiousness. Woo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah sure bio's fun. Studiousness!

Permalink Mark Unread

And then it's over and they have math!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ev is there. Since she has math with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yyyup. Hi Ev! How're you? Would you be interested in some subtle flirting?

Permalink Mark Unread

She– will not react in any negative way to the flirting, no! She will not, however, reciprocate it, though she does feel flattered by it.

She's always up for making new friends, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh well. Sadde will reduce the flirting to standard background noise levels of Sadde flirtiness, then. Can't win them all, and he's pretty sure this one isn't a case of incompatible sexualities.

Permalink Mark Unread

If it makes him feel any better, it doesn't seem like she's actually dated anybody here. Perhaps she's just not into the idea of dating in high school.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't really change much, she doesn't need a reason beyond "I don't feel like it" to turn him down, he's cool with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Math will continue, in that case. And then it will be over and she will smile, wave goodbye, and head off to English.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo has French and Sadde has Spanish, woo.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then lunch of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lunch! Then since it's a Wednesday they've got various clubs and then gym, woo, and then it's the end of the day!

Theo is out the front of the school waiting for Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey!" says Theo. "Ready to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool," he says. "Got anything in particular you want to do, or…?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, yes, but it's a bit too early for that, so I'll accept suggestions."

Permalink Mark Unread

He raises an eyebrow. "I was going to suggest games, since it'll only be a couple of hours before we go running, and then I don't know if you want to get back to your place right after or what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's not decide in advance where I'll be going then. What games?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Theeeere are soccer games, racing games, puzzle games, platformers, um. I have quite a lot of games? I was just gonna show you the lot and see if anything caught your attention or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, video games, grand, I haven't actually ever played, sure, you can show me them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You– huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, for one, you've never played video games? And for two, yeah, I wasn't exactly talking about board games, they're not my favorite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I've never played video games. Nor a whole lot of board games either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Welllll, I have quite a few so I can show you– various ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool! And in the meantime… Got any interesting hobbies? Oh– the shapeshifting thing, if you know anything else about that you could tell me about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Not really, the shapeshifting's very frustrating, and it's not really a hobby. As far as hobbies go, I like reading, going on walks, watching movies, talking to people, flirting and making out with them, nerding about stuff..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nerding about stuff sounds possibly fun, if you have particular things to nerd about," says Theo. "Any particular genre of movie or book that you prefer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like nerding about lots of things! Like math. I like nerding about math. Or physics. Or biology. I just—don't often have anyone to nerd with. As for genres, mmm, I like stuff with good well-built stories and worlds and characters, especially smart ones, but nothing in particular beyond that. How about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nerding sounds fun, but I'm not sure if I'm nerd enough about enough topics. For books – I like ones with happy endings, mainly, especially if there's a– thing that they have to overcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...so like ninety percent of them," he laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's– a bit more precise than that but I'm not sure how to word it, and the happy ending has to be an honestly happy ending, as opposed to something like 'and then he became god and recreated the world in the horrific way it was before, but at least it's not destroyed', because that's… stupid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really mind a sad ending so long as it's, like, sad for a reason and not some Diabolus Ex Machina. Like, if things go wrong because god decided they would that annoys me, if things go wrong because the characters are stupid in ways that don't make sense for them to be that annoys me, but if it's genuine lack of forethought, or if the problem was genuinely hard and they had only a very slim chance of succeeding anyway, or stuff like that, then I enjoy that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm… I think it depends, but I'd prefer to know it's gonna end badly going in, then it has a chance to redeem itself on the other properties before I get to the end and have the sad note that makes me think 'ugh.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't particularly enjoy a book less if I know its ending but I prefer not to. I like trying to figure out what's gonna happen." Pause. "I really dislike Sherlock Holmes books."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't actually read them!" says Theo. "Is any of this due to the 'look how smart I am deducing all these things' thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he were actually deducing all these things I'd be okay with it, but he's actually doing voodoo magic to reach his conclusions and that's not nearly as interesting. Or, rather, it'd be interesting if it were explored as magic rather than just waved away with a 'huh.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, so it's the– oh, right, I didn't mean the stuck-up attitude, I meant to, like, scare-quote 'deducing'. Since, you know – 'deducing.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, yeah. It's just that the process through which he deduces stuff is very black-box-y and impossible to replicate at home. It's not really interesting to reach the end of the book and find that the key to solving the mystery wasn't even actually mentioned to the reader. It's probably supposed to make me feel impressed by how Mr. Holmes thought about looking at this very obscure thing but it only makes me feel frustrated that I never got the chance to check whether I would, in fact, have looked at this very obscure thing had the information been available to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they're mainly meant for people who would not even bother trying to put the pieces together, even if they were all available?" he says. "I don't know. Like I said, I haven't really read them – they're sort of, part of a genre that I don't really tend to read."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not really a fan of– mystery novels that much? Crime things, those can be interesting, but things like Sherlock where they're all set in the past and they're– also weirdly 'deduce'-y, not sure how to phrase that better, I don't really enjoy those all that much. Or, maybe I would, but I haven't read many because of the fact I don't think I do or would like them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I like Agatha Christie a bit more."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they're at Theo's house! It's not huge, but it's, you know, a decent sized house in a small town. He opens the door and shows Sadde around.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde will be quietly impressed by the house and follow Theo as he's shown around.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not– that impressive, like, it's sort of impressive since it's mainly Theo's because his mom is practically never around, but he hasn't gotten 'round to telling Sadde that yet, though he will have by the end of the tour.

Kitchen, living room, point out the bathroom, show Sadde the various books and games and movies available, mention that his mom travels a lot and she won't be back for like another two weeks this time, move swiftly onwards to ask about what Sadde wants to do—

Permalink Mark Unread

"...in a completely empty house with you? We-ell, I suppose you could show me video games..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Video games it is," he says.

He has quite a few. Of various genres. Is there any particular type of game that catches Sadde's eye?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really, he has literally never played anything before.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can play some Mario Kart then! How about that, does that sound fun or should he look for something else for them to play?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, Mario Kart sounds fun, what does Mario have to do with karts—ooh. Oooooh! This is fun there are explosions!

Permalink Mark Unread

There are! Also bananas and weird turtle shells and oh look a very pretty map named rainbow road where you can fall off the track if you're not careful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde thinks this is delightful and giggles whenever he or Theo fall off the track. Mostly himself due to practice, lack thereof.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo does it a few times! It is pretty fun, though, yeah, and they can spend at least half an hour doing this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh look Sadde adjusted his position a bit and his arm is touching Theo's now, this was completely unconscious and unintentional and Sadde hasn't even noticed it, has he, so engrossed is he in the game.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo's not going to conspicuously move away – arms touching isn't particularly weird.

Woo, Mario Kart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope, not weird at all. Sadde won't really get tired of playing this game too soon either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it'll get to about 5pm and, "Might be a good time to go jogging."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay! That was fun, though, I could see myself losing a lot of time doing this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" he says. "Lots of people do – video games sell pretty well for a good reason."

Up he gets, switches off the console, and, "Should we swing by yours to get you some clothes then? I can get changed, then we go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I actually brought some with me in my backpack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool," he says. "Be back in a sec, then." And upstairs he goes, presumably to get changed.

Permalink Mark Unread

...well it's an empty house Theo lives alone in, he'll just change where he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup! That's probably just fine, the room even has a door if he cares to shut it, how considerate of it.

Theo's back down shortly and he starts putting on his shoes.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sadde's ready!

Jogging?

Permalink Mark Unread

Jogging! And talking a bit, if Sadde wants to – Theo's up for that – but if he just wants to jog, then they can jog around Theo's usual route.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure!

"So what other games do you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I have like one soccer thing? A few shooters, a few puzzle games, some team games or like, group games like Mario Kart…" Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well you're adorable when you're playing video games but I think I'm more interested in multiplayer ones than watching you play. Or having you watch me play."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think there are a couple of two-player games too, or we could use my laptop and, uh, some other computer, I can probably find one that works decently, and play multiplayer games on those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "That works for me. Unless you have other suggestions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I think that's mostly it for video games, yeah? There's lots of TV and movies and stuff, though, if we do this other times?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sure, that works."

Oblivious, or unwilling? The eternal question.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

It's not like he's going to say if he's oblivious or unwilling – perhaps Sadde should just ask him outright, seeing as he seems willing to spend time with Sadde anyway?

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know, there's another thing we could be doing after this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?" he asks. "I can cook food if you want some."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnot quite what I had in mind, although I suppose we'll be hungry after this." And quite in shape the both of them are, huh, talking with no problems while jogging.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not like they're going that fast, and yeah, Theo is pretty in shape, seeing as he jogs regularly.

In response: he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

...ffffiiiiine if Theo won't meet him halfway he won't push it.

"Do you cook? ...well presumably you do, I mean, are you good at it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do! I think. Mainly pasta or following a recipe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not! I mean, I can survive if left to my own devices, but I never had the patience to learn how to cook properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Baking's good – my mom's pretty good at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mine's a reasonably good cook. Not amazing, but not bad at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods and continues jogging.

Woo, jogging!

Permalink Mark Unread

Jogging! It's fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is! Theo points out any interesting things that they might come across on their route, but they're mostly going 'round the edge bits of town so it's mainly 'oh look a tree' and 'oh look a house'.

Permalink Mark Unread

How exciting. Sadde's mostly focusing on the exercise (and on how attractive Theo looks when all sweaty, oh dear).

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo isn't actually focusing on how you look, sorry Sadde, but he might be happy to know that you're focusing on him.

Jogging! Pointing out boring stuff! Then eventually it'll come to an end!

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww what a shame. Oh well. He'll hang around for a little bit to check whether Theo meant what he said when he invited Sadde for food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo did in fact mean what he said! But he should probably shower before he gets cooking – Sadde can use his mom's en-suite so long as he's careful not to, like, mess with things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, fine by him, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shower! Then he goes into the kitchen and– he actually has no idea what Sadde wants to eat so he just grabs out a pan and a chopping board and then waits until he's done to ask.

Permalink Mark Unread

There he is, wearing the same clothes he was in at school. "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Any sort of thing you want or don't like…? I wasn't really sure if you wanted, like, pasta and bacon or like spaghetti bolognese or like– I dunno, omelette? Or if you're vegetarian, I know how to do some vegetarian dishes too, and like, omelette is okay unless you're vegan anyway?"

… Words. Apparently Theo can say a lot of them in a short period of time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah that's actually pretty surprising. "No restrictions. Surprise me," he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Pasta and bacon then? Since it's relatively quick and easy."

He puts some water on to boil and turns the grill on, then gets out a pack of pasta and some bacon and starts preparing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. So– think you'll wanna keep doing this, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it was fun! And it's good to keep in shape and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He beams.

"So, why do you live alone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Cause my mom travels a lot for work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. What does she do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, she's an exec in her company! Usually she's away doing various administrative things kinda close-up. … Uh, I don't actually know in that much detail what she actually does? She seems to do it quite well, though." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Cool." He won't ask about his dad because Theo didn't mention a dad and must have a reason for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pasta! Fortunately, pasta does not actually take too long to cook, nor does bacon, so they'll have pasta and bacon ready relatively soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whee pasta!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom! It is in fact relatively tasty, but then again, it's kinda hard to cook just 'pasta and bacon' badly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, what's your thing?" he asks one of his favorite questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a bit vague? And I'm not sure what you mean by 'thing'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you know, if you had to describe yourself with three words what would you say, what's important to know about Theo, this kind of stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Three words, um. I'd hope people would describe me something like 'charming, knowledgeable and fun'? I'm not sure how accurate those are, though, not being another person who could judge my charmingness unbiasedly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I find you quite charming."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," he says, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I'm more interested in the knowledgeable part, what are you knowledgeable about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like languages and math, mainly? Science, too – like, if I find something interesting then I might go research it on Wikipedia or something, sometimes I read magazines and stuff like that about new discoveries? Sort of vaguely knowledgeable about science, that is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I tend to like not being vague when I can, but that's not always and not about everything. I think I mentioned I'm terrible at languages?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you did, yeah?" He shrugs. "I'm pretty good at them. Well, at French and I did a bit of German and I've had a look at Japanese but it seems– kinda complicated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Kinda complicated.' Wow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not actually as bad as you might think because, like, they have a few consistent characters that get used in a lot of places that are pronunciation-based, like letters in English, but then there are a few thousand meaning thingies – kanji, the Chinese characters – and they're, um. Yeah, they're kinda difficult." Shrug. "Not as bad as Chinese, though – that has tones. Well, so does Japanese, sorta, but like, not as much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I can buy that. But then again, with my current knowledge of Japanese I'd buy pretty much whatever you said."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "It's kinda neat how different it is, though. Anyway, what about you? What are your three words? I don't think I've heard them yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes you have! Genderfluid shapeshifting nerd! They're more uniquely identifying than yours, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh right, yeah. Mine are not very unique, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, can you find three words that'd describe you uniquely?" Pause. "Which are not stuff like your name and birth place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. I have an inclination to say… directed– um, sideways, and… self-sufficient? The 'sideways' thing is a cheat to cover a bunch of things, and I'm pretty sure that doesn't describe me uniquely, but, I'm having difficulty thinking of anything better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well let's start with that, what do you mean by that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs a bit. "Okay, this is gonna sound ridiculous because everyone thinks it, but, like, 'unique'. There are lots of ways where I'm super generic and boring and whatever, but then I have a few things that– I can't actually think of properly right now, I swear there are some, and I think overall it makes me… unique. Then again, everyone is unique and-or thinks they're unique, so, that doesn't really help to uniquely describe me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It dooooesn't. I mean, everyone is unique, yeah, but it's the ways in which you're unique I'm interested in. What makes Theo not like other girls?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Hm? Is that a Mean Girls reference or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It... may be? I mean it's a regular pop culture reference, but it could've originated there for all I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's just, 'not like other girls', but, okay, I don't think I've ever heard that reference." Shrug. "Yeah, like I said, I swear there are some things but right now I can't think of them so, eh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most people aren't unique in that they have unique specific things about them. Richard Feynman had an IQ of one hundred and eighty or so, was somewhat misogynistic, worked in the Manhattan Project, revolutionized physics, and none of those specific things is unique to him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I can't really think of any things that are even close to unique, though, so. Um. Okay, I like languages and like to know a lot about them, so that's probably one of them, since I'm not sure many people learn that much about that many different languages? After that, um, it's probably kinda unique that my mom is so high up in a big company? Not many people have that and then get mostly self-sufficient and stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your mom being high up in a big company isn't really about you, but being mostly self-sufficient is. How do you deal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I… learned how to look after myself, mostly? There's not all that many things you need to do, you just need a routine and to stick to it and stuff, and she provides me with the money to buy things and stuff, it's not like I have to work as well." Shrug. Continue eating.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But don't you, like, get lonely and stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little? But I see people at school most days, and I invite people over for games and stuff, like today, so I'm usually fine." He shrugs again. "I don't know; maybe I'd have turned out differently if it wasn't like this, but I think I'm doing fine as is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you seem alright. Mom and I have lived just with each other for most of my life."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "How's the food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's pretty good! I mean, granted, it's hard to duck up pasta-and-bacon but still."

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo raises an eyebrow. "Duck up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, yeah, I don't really swear."

Permalink Mark Unread

He tilts his head. "I mean, you could just say 'mess up' instead, or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, yeah, but it's not the same thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. Then he finishes eating.

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins and finishes eating as well.

"So, uh, I guess I should go home, then?" Since there won't be any kissing happening, apparently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can if you want?" he says. "But it's only like, what, seven? So you could stay a bit longer and play some more games if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I was trying to politely say that I was going to get out of your hair but if your hair doesn't mind..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My hair does not in fact mind. Like I said, mostly interact with people at school or after school when I invite them over, so…" Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well sure, then. Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the games console! "Different game now or a bit more Mario Kart?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will remind you I had never played before and do not in fact know these games."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So is that a 'I'm willing to try new things' then?" he asks. "Because if so, we could play– uh, I dunno, there are a few? How about this?" He holds one up that has a fancy cover. "It's open world, it has guns and cars, it has missions to do? Also multiplayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm always willing to try new things," he says, with only a little bit of a double entendre going on. "Hit me."

Permalink Mark Unread

So they can play that game for another while! As described, it is in fact open-world with guns and cars and missions and also is multiplayer.

Does Sadde like blowing things up? Does Sadde like shooting members of gangs? If not, there's still the opportunity to go skydiving in the game. And if that's not fun, there's still the opportunity to drive around at high speeds.

Theo seems to be enjoying himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blowing things up is fun! Shooting members of gangs—somewhat less. Skydiving is definitely fun, as is driving around at high speeds.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then after an hour or maybe a bit longer (probably more like two hours, and after a little bit of glancing over at Sadde a few times), Theo will mention that it does seem to be getting quite late and perhaps Sadde should go home because it's a school day tomorrow.

"It's been fun though," he says, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we definitely ought to do this again," he says, and stands up, stretching a bit. "Exercising feels good," he comments lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," agrees Theo. "To both points."

Did he look Sadde over? It's possible. It was a relatively brief look-over, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well Sadde's been dropping hints all day, ball's in Theo's court now.

He starts making his way downstairs, where he left his backpack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo follows, looks at Sadde again, but appears to decide not to make a move. "See you tomorrow," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde raises an eyebrow but doesn't comment. "See you," he says, and makes his way out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo will shut the door behind him.

He will be present at school the next day, as is only to be expected.

Permalink Mark Unread

And so will Sadde! Who will continue to fail to seduce Theo, but will seduce other people over the next few days, and re-seduce some old people (hi Matt), and not-seduce yet other people. And other than all the seducing there's the socializing, the becoming very good friends with one Willow Maxwell, and school, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

… And then there's news around the school that apparently Ev is throwing a party.

Lots of people are invited. Including Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh party! When is it? She'll be there!

Permalink Mark Unread

This Friday! Because, you know, wouldn't want people to be hungov– ahem, too tired for the next day of school.

Permalink Mark Unread

So on Friday at the appointed time Sadde's there!

Permalink Mark Unread

As is Willow!

Permalink Mark Unread

The party seems to have already started with a few people! Ev opens the door, shows them in, and look – beverages, of assorted kinds, games, music, quite a few people are here already, snacks are available if desired, et cetera et cetera.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mingling! Socialization! People! Woo!

Starting with: what beverages?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, there are various types of soda and carbonated drinks available – cola and such – or, hidden slightly away at the back, there are a few (or a lot of) alcoholic drinks.

Which. Obviously Ev didn't put there. Because that would be bad.

Must've been someone else.

But anyway! Woo, party.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah no alcohol, thanks. And what people are there?

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt appears to be here! He waves at Sadde – hi there, Sadde – and is currently talking to a couple of guys from school!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde walks over there, grinning. "Hey, there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey!" says Matt. As do Owen and John, who then get back to talking to each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How're you enjoying the party?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't actually been here that long!" he says. "It's going well so far, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What food is there? I forgot to ask Ev and then was following him," she gestures at Sadde, "but I want party food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Snack stuff like chips? A few cheese twist things too, bits of food like that, and I think she's planning on doing, like, fries and pizza later?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you could go grab some."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" And off she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, things going well?" asks Matt of Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I've been enjoying myself much more than I'd expected."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good," he smiles, and then he notices that someone seems to be at the door!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's Theo! He says hi to Evelyn and gets told the introductory information.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh look it's Theo.

Anyway. "I wanna play an immature teenager game, are there any around here?" he asks Matt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, like spin the bottle? I don't think there are any yet but maybe one started in another room? There'll probably be more when people are– a bit drunker."

He waves at Theo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo waves back, finishes talking to Evelyn, and then makes his way over. "Hey!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello! Wanna start playing immature teenager games with us? Matt said he's in," he says, even though Matt said no such thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eyebrow raise. "Sure. What immature teenager games?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spin the bottle, of course, unless you have a better idea. Who knows, maybe I'll get to kiss someone I haven't kissed yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt laughs. "Okay, so, got anyone else to play or do we just call out that we're doing it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call out that we're doing it, I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

So Matt does as such!

Permalink Mark Unread

A couple of girls – Samantha and Izzy – decide they want to play with the cute boys! This causes Owen, one of the guys Matt was talking to, to also volunteer, dragging in his friend Ted, which leads Sophia to join in.

There's a nice space on the floor for them to sit in a circle, if they find a bottle. (It shouldn't be too hard to find one.)

Permalink Mark Unread

No it shouldn't oh look there one is. Sadde joins the circle and spies Willow arriving with the food over there. "Hey Willow, wanna play spin the bottle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, thanks, I'm cool," she says with her mouth full, and goes looking for other friends who won't be busy making out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Evelyn notices, comes over, raises an eyebrow and asks, "Spin the bottle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yyyup," says Theo. "Wanna join in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm," she shrugs. "Yeah, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooh! That's lots of people he hasn't kissed!

"I think then our gracious hostess should get us started."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well okay then!" she says, taking the bottle from Sadde, placing it in the center of the circle that they have now formed, waiting a moment for 'suspense', and then spinning it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It lands on Owen.

Theo looks between the two of them, then at Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

Evelyn goes over to Owen: and they kiss. Briefly. On the lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde either doesn't notice or doesn't react to Theo's look, and just grins and waits for Owen to spin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Owen spins the bottle! … And gets Samantha.

Evelyn presses a finger to her lips and watches.

Then Owen and Samantha kiss. Slightly less briefly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde doesn't giggle, but he suspects this might resume after the game's done.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who knows! Obviously none of the other participants in the game know, because obviously neither Owen nor Samantha makes eyes at the other after they're done kissing.

Then Samantha spins the bottle.

It lands on Evelyn.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after they're done maybe Evelyn's will land on Sadde, that'd be grand, wouldn't it?

Permalink Mark Unread

… You know what, it actually lands on Matt! And then after that…

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt's lands on Sadde!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ee kissing Matt again! Matt is so cute and Sadde enjoys kissing him immensely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt seems to enjoy kissing Sadde too!

Then it's Sadde's turn to spin the bottle.

Permalink Mark Unread

It lands on Ted! Hi, Ted.

Permalink Mark Unread

… Hi, Sadde. Ted isn't sure how he wants to do this.

(Does he seem nervous? Yes. Does he seem totally averse? Hm. Possibly not.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Sadde won't bother him with more than a light peck, and then it's his turn. If he ever wants more where that came from, it's probably common knowledge at school by now that it shouldn't be hard to get it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ted spins it and gets Sophia!

She seems quite happy about this.

Then Sophia spins it and gets: Theo!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well okay then. Theo will kiss Sophia. Briefly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Come on get Sadde get Sadde Sadde wants to kiss you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo… gets Sophia again, actually. Haha.

Then Sophia spins it, gets Izzy – that was definitely a very brief kiss there – who gets Theo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who will get Sadde come on you silly bottle.

Permalink Mark Unread

He… actually gets Matt. And looks at Matt quite tentatively, like he's not really sure about it–

Permalink Mark Unread

But Matt quite happily grabs his face and kisses it, because c'mon, it's spin the bottle.

Matt gets Samantha.

Permalink Mark Unread

Samantha gets Theo, and then it's Theo's third time to spin the bottle.

Maybe third time's the charm?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Yes it is!

(Is it?)

Permalink Mark Unread

… It is. For Sadde, at least.

Tentative? Yep. Theo is tentative again.

Also looking like he might be a little unsure about Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw come on it's spin the bottle let's kiss the cute boy.

Kissssss~

Permalink Mark Unread

They do in fact kiss.

It doesn't last that long before Theo pulls away, but it still happened.

Then it's Sadde's turn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww. Alright.

And Sadde gets Ev!

Permalink Mark Unread

And does Sadde go in for a relatively short kiss or does he try for something slightly longer?

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll let Ev choose, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm, she's not too opposed to slightly longer, but she doesn't linger.

Then she spins it and gets Owen, kisses him, and says she's gotta go put some food on.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sadde, having finally kissed two of the people he hadn't kissed before and wanted to (plus Ted, who he hadn't actually met but is not unhappy about having kissed), will enjoy the game for as long as it lasts without getting all anticipatory.

Permalink Mark Unread

More kissing will occur! Sadde will probably get to try out a few more people, Evelyn will welcome a few more people, the party will get gradually busier, and a few more people will join in with the spin-the-bottle.

Also someone will turn the music up. Apparently they're in the mood for dancing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, dancing! Sadde would've liked to invite Theo to dance, but he didn't seem super into the kiss so nyeh, and he's been on a couple of dates with Matt, but how about Ev? Is she too busy for a dance?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's sorta moving around quite a lot, making sure everything's okay and nobody's breaking anything, but she'll notice Sadde if he seems to want to dance and she'd be happy to dance with him a bit!

Permalink Mark Unread

Woo, dancing!

"This is cool, I'm glad you threw this party."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad you think so!" she says, smiling. "I like throwing parties. People are good fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are! And it's good to get everyone to relax from school and stuff. I mean, I'm kind of a huge nerd so it's not like I get super annoyed by school, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it's nice to have a break from all the work anyway, yeah."

Dancing is fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmhm. Plus the environment of a party is a nice change in the social dynamics and breaks the status quo a bit."

It is!

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, enjoying your time here so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, a lot! Everyone is much, hmm, nicer than I'm used to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Huh, weird – maybe it's just a small town thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't have expected small towns to be less transphobic than big ones. The opposite, if anything. But not a single person has called me names here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh right, I thought you just meant in general – yeah, hmm." Shrug. "We don't get much homophobia either?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty used to it, I'm about the queerest person I know. The only way I could be queerer would be if I was completely nonbinary genderfluid. Bet I could rock the enby aesthetic."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Anyway – I should probably go check on the food and make sure nobody's, like, setting fire to anything. See you later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye, fun dancing with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too," she smiles.

And then off to sort out the food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo: is chatting to Matt! And playing pinball. Apparently Evelyn has a pinball machine.

Yyyup.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, pinball, that looks fun, Sadde scoots over there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," says Matt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hiya! Am I interrupting anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! Just pinball, but feel free to join in."

Is Theo looking at Sadde's lips? Perhaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde raises an eyebrow. "You're going to have to make up your mind," he says softly instead of replying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo… shrugs, then asks, "Pinball?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde shakes his head a bit but asks, "How does one even do multiplayer pinball?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's mainly just taking it in turns and seeing who can get the highest score in one turn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool. Sounds easy enough."

So he'll wait for Theo to lose so he can take a turn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo loses in relatively short time! His score isn't too bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Sadde starts playing! This is a game he has, in fact, played before, so he's not too bad either—certainly not as crushingly inferior to Theo as he was in Mario Kart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that's nice!

… Theo wanders off for a moment to grab some chips, but returns shortly with a small bowl of them, offering them to the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt takes a few!

Permalink Mark Unread

As does Sadde as soon as he loses.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's Matt's go so he plays!

Is likewise not terrible. Does better than Theo.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sadde has an idea!

Maybe. Maybe an idea. It's Theo's turn in the machine, yes?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, sure!

Permalink Mark Unread

What idea?

Permalink Mark Unread

"So," he asks Matt, "wanna make out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure?" he laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good! Making out! While Theo plays.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup!

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo looks over at the both of them, raises an eyebrow, smirks a bit, and then continues playing.

He seems… totally unfazed, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

All according to plan! Sadde will continue making out (and testing the waters for how handsy he can be) until Theo loses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he can get quite handsy above the waist, but the pinball machine, unfortunately, is not in a dark corner or anything, so below the waist is prrrobably a no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo eventually loses! Then eyes them pointedly and says, "Planning on coming up for air?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde pulls away giggling and says, "Yeah! My turn!" And takes over the machine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt raises an eyebrow at Theo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo laughs, shakes his head a bit, and watches Sadde and pinball.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde doesn't last very long! One could almost say he was eager to finish, except his score wasn't much lower than his usual.

Matt's turn?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! So he starts playing—

Permalink Mark Unread

And Evelyn comes out with pizza.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw come onSeriously?

(Yes, he's annoyed that the pizza's arrived, it's pretty obvious.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey look, she's just putting it down – it's up to the individuals when they choose to grab a slice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo: does not actually choose right now to grab a slice.

"You okay?" he asks Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yyyyeah, I kinda wanted to ask you to make out while he was playing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt raises an eyebrow and decides to go grab some pizza! Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo shrugs. "Not sure," he says. Bit of a guilty look. "Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awww. Spoilsport."

Permalink Mark Unread

"… Anyway, do you want some pizza?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pizza, then. And fries, because fries are also available.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yyyup!

So, now that Sadde has determined to his satisfaction that Theo doesn't wanna make out, he can...

...well, nothing will change, really, it's not like he was too far off his flirting baseline, he'll just no longer expect it to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

The party will continue, in that case!

The music gets a bit louder as the night progresses, people get slightly drunker, and more dancing occurs and the lights get dimmer.

It's possible that some people are getting a bit handsy in the corners. Or upstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde kinda wants to get handsy with someone, any takers?

Permalink Mark Unread

There are a few! … Mainly girls today.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who's Sadde to complain, let's get handsy!

Permalink Mark Unread

And that can continue for a bit!

Permalink Mark Unread

As long (and as far) as she likes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Not too far! But for quite a while, and then she decides to go get another drink, smiling at him rather flirtatiously as she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it flirtatiously as in 'I had fun' or flirtatiously as in 'why don't you join me'?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, it was probably the 'I had fun' one. Maybe she'll be up for another round some other time, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, alright, anyone else up to getting handsy? Or maybe just dancing, he hasn't danced a whole lot tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lots of people up to dancing! Or he can just dance vaguely among a bunch of people in the space that's acting as a dancefloor, that's also an option.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well unless he can dance with someone he'll do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can definitely dance with some people.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool! He'll do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then Matt appears! Apparently he wants to dance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay! Dancing!

Permalink Mark Unread

And this can continue for a while and some people will get progressively drunker and drunker and the food will continue to disappear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo will come dance after a while, too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently they'll be amongst the only sober ones there, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo? Sober? Pff– yeah, he is.

But he can still have fun! Woo, dancing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt's had a drink.

Just the one, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

So they'll dance and have fun and then eventually the party will be over.

Permalink Mark Unread

People will slowly disappear, Sadde will see that one girl from earlier wink at him and then go out the door, and Theo will say, "I should probably get going too."

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll wink at her back, then look at Theo. "Yeah, I should, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

So Theo waves bye to Evelyn and then off he goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You two seemed– um, something tonight," says Matt from behind Sadde. "Everything alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm? Well I'm disappointed he doesn't wanna make out but it's not like he's the very first person I've wanted to kiss who didn't want me back," he shrugs. "Case in point," he gestures towards Ev with his chin. "What is kinda frustrating is that, unlike Ev who was just basically not interested from the get-go, I couldn't figure Theo out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt shrugs. "Maybe he hadn't made up his mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I dunno. If he ever changes his mind, though," and he grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "He might."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully! In the meantime I am going to continue being a slut at everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enjoy," says Matt, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will! But now I'm going home. Hhhoww about a goodnight kiss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smirks, but does indeed give Sadde a goodnight kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee. "G'night!"

And he finds Ev, thanks her for the party, tells her goodnight, and off he goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ev smiles, says it's no problem, slightly eyes the mess she has to clean up (it's not actually that bad) and then goes to say bye to someone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Weeks pass, classes happen, people are only very slightly transphobic, it's almost unnoticeable, really, and even that bit starts fading away with time.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then, one Tuesday morning before school, in the courtyard, Theo is talking to his friends!

Is Sadde present yet?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ayup, there he is, just arriving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Theo raises a hand to wave, then– frowns a little.

A few seconds later, he drops to the ground quite bonelessly.

Permalink Mark Unread

… People seem slightly shocked! "Theo?" asks one of his friends. Another one leans over him to have a look at his face, then looks up and seems… a little pale.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

Sadde runs over to him. "What happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He just– collapsed?" says the first one, Sam.

The second one, Ted, crouches down and pokes him lightly. "I think– should someone tell the nurse?"

A few people in the surrounding area seem to have taken note of the commotion.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, you, Ted, go call the nurse. Sam, go find a teacher. You," he points at someone, "call nine-one-one."

Pulse?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ted goes to fetch the nurse! Sam goes to find a teacher. Other person (named Owen, for the record) looks quite shell-shocked. Then Fred, one of their friends, shakes them, causing them to get out their phone and in fact dial 911.

There is no pulse. Not even a weak one.

Permalink Mark Unread

What the fuck.

"Does anyone here know CPR?" he asks in a loud authoritative voice, looking people one by one in the eye.

Permalink Mark Unread

None of the people he looks at seems to know?

However, a girl steps up from behind him, kneels down and starts doing chest compressions.

Apparently someone has taken a First Aid course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Okay. Now he can watch and fret.

Permalink Mark Unread

Willow arrives. "What happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He collapsed out of the blue, isn't breathing, no pulse," Sadde says quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt walks through the gates and notices the scene. He stops for a moment, then breaks into a run, because what the hell is Sadde doing near a body having CPR performed on it?

Oh, it's Theo. Well, that just makes everything so much better.

Permalink Mark Unread

A teacher comes out of the building and moves over towards them, sees the body and takes a sharp intake of breath.

"Has somebody called 911?" she asks, still looking at the body.

Fred nods and points at Owen, who is currently conversing with someone, relaying information about their location and the apparent state of the– person.

The girl continues performing chest compressions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay good an adult except no Sadde doesn't really trust the competence of others just because they're adults so he keeps supervising it.

"Everyone give him some space, there should be a clear path for the paramedics when they arrive." He looks at the girl performing CPR expectantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is that a sign for her to move? She gives him a look like look this guy is still not breathing and continues.

The teacher tells someone to go get the principal and a few moments after that the nurse appears on-scene. She takes over from the girl and ensures the body's head is tilted back to open the airway, checks for signs of breathing, and – finding none – continues chest compressions with the occasional rescue breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt runs off to fetch the principal.

Running. This is an exception to those repeated rules of 'no running in the halls', because it's an emergency, and Matt is actually surprisingly good at running.

Permalink Mark Unread

… And then someone walks out the doors to the main school building and– notices what's going on. She freezes for a couple of seconds then runs over and tells people to get back, seeing as the teacher doesn't actually seem to be doing that and the nurse is busy and of course Sadde had the good idea first but she wasn't here to hear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde won't quibble about who said what first, he'll just help clear the way and where are the fucking paramedics?

Permalink Mark Unread

They were only called like two minutes ago, c'mon, it's hardly fair to expect them to have come from a town over – remember, this is a small town; it's not like it has a hospital of its own, and there are only a few ambulances spread around towns in the local area – but actually! They do in fact arrive relatively shortly.

And then they rush out, get directed to the appropriate location by people saying 'oh, yeah, seems to be a commotion over there, must be for you' (wow, callous), and take over from the nurse!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good okay those people he has reason to trust, he'll stand back and watch anxiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone else comes over with a gurney, they move him onto it and then take him back over to the ambulance.

Apparently it's kinda urgent, huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

People are, thankfully, very much out of the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! Teamwork, or something.

...okay now what.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the ambulance goes. Sirens, pulling away quickly, everything seeming slightly rushed.

Then the nurse and the teacher look around and… tell people to go to their first classes. (Is there standard protocol for what happens when someone drops dead just before school? Yes, but it's not like they usually have to use it.)

Evelyn looks at them a bit disbelievingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, Sadde's a bit disbelieving as well.

(Theo is not dead he is just—unwell.)

(Are Sadde's skin and hair a bit paler than usual? Maybe.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt runs out again, principal following not far behind, and stops when he notices the lack of– Theo.

Presumably he heard the ambulance, though. So he can probably guess where Theo has gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

The principal seems to have a slightly better handle on the situation and recommends that they all get out of the courtyard at least, while the teachers check around and ensure there's nothing in the area that could have caused it (not that she uses this phrasing).

That means into the school building. Not outside the gates.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh huh. Sadde will follow quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

So people gradually make their way inside while the teacher checks around for things.

The nurse goes back to her office, in case anybody needs her.

People seem– quite shell-shocked.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt looks… a little angry? It's not immediately clear what it's at, so maybe it's just the state of the world. Or maybe it's himself.

Either way, it's a sort of slightly tearful anger.

Permalink Mark Unread

Evelyn is just going to go to her first class.

She's not really sure what else to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Willow walks up to Sadde and hugs him quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde returns the hug and just—stays there, for a few minutes, before bidding her goodbye and going to class, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Matt will make his way to class, too.

First class of the day: seems quite subdued.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. So it does.

Permalink Mark Unread

So does second.

Third is… slightly less so. Lunch has quite a lot of whispering.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is unfortunately a lot of whispering.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde will get food and then disappear somewhere at lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lunch will continue without him, in that case.

Will he be back before fourth period?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he will have English.

About halfway through class, the principal comes into the class, looking quite grave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry to say that one of our pupils, in your age group, has died today. Theo Owens." She looks around at them and hesitates a little, then continues, "If any of you wishes to speak to someone about this, there will be a counselor available. Please don't hesitate to ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

...

Wordlessly, Sadde stands up, grabs his stuff, and starts making his way out.

Permalink Mark Unread

The principal moves to the side as he leaves, then turns to the teacher, apologizes for the interruption, and leaves to go to the next classroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is not, whatever the principal might have assumed, going to the counselor. He is, in fact, going out. Back home.

He cannot be in school right now. His hair is noticeably turning white and his eyes red by the time he's a block away from school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nobody seems to notice him leave. Nobody comes out and stops him, at least.
